On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first

So when I heard about the Sleuthing Women bundle that I posted about earlier today. I sorted through my To-Be-Read bookshelf. I knew I had Mary Kennedy’s Talk Radio Mysteries waiting not so patiently there. I grabbed the first one to read and share with you today!

When a psychologist hits Florida’s airwaves, there’s no telling who she’s reaching…

…and there’s no telling who wants to reach back.

Maggie left her clinical practice in Manhattan and moved to sunny Cypress Grove, Florida, where she became host of WYME’s “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” From co-dependent wives to fetish fiends, all the local crazies love her show.

Then threats start pouring in against one of the station’s special guests-self-styled new age prophet Guru Sanjay Gingii. When one of the threats becomes a deadly reality, Maggie’s new roommate, Lark, is surprisingly the prime suspect. Now, Maggie has to prove Lark innocent while dealing with a killer who needs more than just therapy…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Talk radio is all my husband listens to but I don’t think he has ever tuned in to a program like “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” She gets some very unusual callers. First time and long time callers call in to talk about a variety of topics. She even has special guests like the controversial Guru Sanjay Gingii. He has his followers but he also has his enemies. Maggie has even received a threat at the station to scare her from having him on the show. Shortly after appearing on her show the guru is found dead in his hotel room. Maggie is surprised when the police show up at her door, but they are not there for her, they are there for her roommate, Lark.  What that’s crazy! Lark wouldn’t kill anyone or would she???

Mary Kennedy introduces us to a variety of characters. Maggie, of course, who seems to be a very intelligent woman but not a lot of common sense at times, which was funny in a book, wouldn’t be so funny in real life. Her roommate Lark has a past and Maggie finds out she didn’t know her as well as she thought. Her producer, Vera Mae Atkins, is a hoot, the first chapter is just the start of radio romp. The guru’s followers, staff, and exes make for a large pool of suspects. Maggie’s mom, Lola was my favorite character. She wanted to help Maggie investigate and she was crazy funny. Maggie is also trying to impress a certain detective which adds to the fun.

The radio show theme was unique for me. It did remind of the Frasier television show, his relationship with Roz was very similar to Maggie and Vera, only with a dead body added. The behind the scenes complete with a foreign receptionist who is learning English to a pompous sports announcer all blended together to make this a very interesting read.

The mystery plot was full of twists including the final one that was a total surprise. I was sure I had it all figured out and you guessed it, wrong again.

This was a good debut for this series. I want to see how these characters evolve in the next 2 books, Reel Murder and Stay Tuned for Murder.

enjoyable 2016

Heather Blake 2014

Paranormal, on the Light Side

By Heather Blake

(Post received from publicist.)

I’ve always had a fascination with the paranormal, so it’s really no surprise to me that I started writing witches, psychics, and empaths… My early love of I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and more recently, my slight addiction to Long Island Medium have all have influenced me. But alas, I’m not a witch. Or a genie. Or a psychic. Instead of writing what I know (a common phrase in fiction writing), I simply write what fascinates me.

gone with the witchBeyond pop culture influences, I’ve also had some personal incidents in my life that have made me take note of the paranormal. When my twenty-two-year-old son was three, it was early morning when I heard him talking in the other room, having a full conversation with someone I couldn’t see… When I asked him who he was talking to, he said quite seriously (yet calmly), “The man.”

Spooky, right? It was for me too—at first. But my grandfather had died the week before, before he’d had a chance to meet my son… I like to believe that they were getting to know each other.

For years, I’ve noticed that when I get into my car, my rearview mirror is tilted. If I run an errand and come back to the car the mirror is askew. Not every time, but enough times to make me wonder who’s riding along with me.

It’s situations like these — and others I hear about — that keep me writing about things that can’t easily be explained. I write books that deal with things that go bump…all day long. All of it is unexplainable. All of it so very fun.

Fun, because my preference is to take supernatural experiences and keep them light, to find the humor in them, or to take an emotional look at how these things can impact the lives of those around them…for the good. Despite writing murder mysteries, I prefer to focus on the good, not the evil, which comes across in every book I’ve ever written. There’s too much dark in the world as it is—which is why I don’t like scary movies…or watching the news. Instead you’ll catch me watching repeats of Bewitched.

Have you had anything go bump lately?

~Heather

Darcy and her dog Missy are determined to put their best foot forward at the Enchanted Village’s annual Pawsitively Enchanted pet contest. She’s happy to lend a hand when the show’s organizer hires Darcy to keep an eye on things among growing suspicions that someone is sabotaging the event. But Darcy’s quest for justice is thrown off the scent when her lead suspect is found dead at the competition.

As if a murder weren’t bad enough, someone begins snatching up prize-winning pets right from under their owners’ noses. Darcy is determined to protect the pampered participants at whatever cost. But she’ll have to work fast to sniff out the thief before she becomes the next victim of a killer determined to stop her dead in her tracks…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another enchanting tale from Heather Blake. This series is so magical. I sat down to read and the real world just disappeared.

The pets are on parade in this Wishcraft Mystery with a Pawsitively Enchanted Pet Contest. It is set up like a fair with each pet having a booth. Darcy and Missy are entered but they are really on a job. They have been hired to make sure a certain someone doesn’t sabotage the competition.  When that certain someone ends up dead Darcy focus changes from saving the fair to catching a killer. That isn’t all, someone is stealing some of the contestants and their owners are desperate for their return. Darcy has her handful and wishes she could wish all the problems away but she is going to have to collar the killer by tracking them down herself.

I love the characters, the setting and Ms. Blake always pens a fantastic mystery.

The human residents of The Enchanted Village are wonderful but the “familiars” always put a smile on my face. Pepe and Mrs. P. are quite a pair and always available to help Darcy out. Archie has his own problems this time but still has time to throw a few movie quotes about.

The village is not just enchanting, it is a busy place. There is always something going on. In addition to Darcy work she is having a house renovated and her romantic relationship with Nick is moving right along. Aunt Ve is always up to something. Darcy thinks she is meeting in secret with The Elder and wonders what they have brewing.

Magic and mystery are blended together in such a great way. I was engaged from the first page until the last and sorry that the story had to end.

Throughout the series a big secret has been kept from Darcy and her sister. We got close to a reveal in the last book but it comes to light completely in this story. Now we have to wait to see what happens next in The Witch and the Dead in October. I am wishing it wasn’t so far away!

Cozy Wednesday with Sally Goldenbaum – Author of Murder at Lambswool Farm – #Review/ #Giveaway

cozy wednesday 2013 640

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I love when Sally Goldenbaum stops by for a visit.

Her new book, Murder at Lambswool Farm, the 11th Seaside Knitters Mystery, was released yesterday in hardcover. A Finely Knit Murder, book 9 in the series was released in trade paperback yesterday too.

SALLY

My warmest thanks to our wonderful hostess, Dolly. She is a friend to so many of us, bringing readers and writers together in her cozy corner. Thank you, dear Dolly.

It all began with a Farm, a Lamb, a Beautiful Sunset Dinner . . .

sally 1Sometimes when a new mystery is about to be launched and people ask me how it all began, I have to really think hard to separate the final product from the very first idea, that first ‘ping’ that made me think of my Sea Harbor women and their mystery solving expertise.

Was it something I read?   A conversation I overheard in Starbucks? Something I saw on a walk?

sally 2Sometimes that moment is easy to remember, like the time I spotted a deserted baby car seat on a beach and it was still there days later. It stayed in my head, a mystery for Nell, Izzy, Cass and Birdie to solve—a scene that launched the fifth seaside knitters mystery, Angora Alibi.

Or the day I walked along the Gloucester harbor and was curious about an overgrown piece of valuable land, strewn with trash and bordered by a rusty fence. Who owned it? Why was it such a mess? It wasn’t until I explored it in A Fatal Fleece that an old fisherman named Finnegan helped the seaside knitters figure it all out.

sally 3Murder at Lambswool Farm was different. It began with beautiful photographs I came upon by chance: a green sustainable farm in Massachusetts, a photo of a barn transformed into my dream kitchen, and a photo of an elegantly set table out in a field. I wanted to be in every one of those scenes. And so was born Lambswool Farm, a piece of land Birdie (the oldest seaside knitter) had inherited. She decided to turn it into a farm where guests could dine alongside the vegetables—with the sea in the distance and soft music floating on the salty breeze. And of course it would be called Lambswool Farm. Birdie is a knitter, after all—and she has a granddaughter who loves lambs.

sally4It wasn’t until I began writing about the farm that the mystery developed. It happened the day a stranger stopped at the gate. His car broke down, or so he said. He was a photographer … or so it seemed.  A passerby…he said…but one who seemed overly curious about the seaside knitters and Sea Harbor—especially the town’s medical clinic, where strange things began happening.

And so it began . . . .a farm, a lamb, a sunset dinner . . .and the murder of a well-loved Sea Harbor resident. . . a seaside mystery to be solve

~Sally

About The Author

Sally Goldenbaum is a sometime philosophy teacher, a knitter, and an editor, and the author of more than thirty novels. Sally became more serious about knitting with the birth of her first grandchild and the creation of the Seaside Knitters Mystery series. Her fictional knitting friends are teaching her the intricacies of women’s friendship, the mysteries of small-town living, and the very best way to pick up dropped stitches on a lacy knit shawl.

Late summer blooms in beautiful Sea Harbor, Massachusetts, and while a harvest thrives, Izzy Chambers Perry and the other Seaside Knitters will need to cast on their sleuthing skills to save a local farm.  Unfortunately, finding a killer can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. . . .

Seaside Knitter Birdie Favazza has long loved knitting, but lately she’s taken on a new challenge—making a family farm operational again. With help from friends, Lambswool Farm is now up and running, with thriving crops and grazing sheep.  In addition, the farm will host rustic, six-course prix fixe dinners plated by local chefs and served on a gorgeous restored harvest table, decorated to perfection with colorful knitted vegetables crafted by Izzy Chambers Perry, her aunt Nell, and the other Seaside Knitters.

But on the night of the first meal, everything spins out of control when one of the guests, Seaside Harbor’s family physician, becomes fatally ill. It seems that behind Dr. Alan Hamilton’s friendly bedside manner was a man with enemies and secrets.

Soon the town is gossiping and pointing fingers at all possible suspects—including the women at Lambswool Farm. Now the Seaside Knitters must join together to uncover the truth in Dr. Hamilton’s complicated past—and restore peace to town and country alike.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

When I pick up a book by Sally Goldenbaum I feel like I am going to visit dear friends. I can’t believe this is book 11 in this series, meaning this is my 11th visit to Sea Harbor. This time we travel to Lambswool Farm. Birdie with the help of several Sea Harbor residents has given new life to the Favazza Family Farm. The fields are full of crops and there are sheep in the pasture. The farm will now serve diners huge farm to table dinners outside at huge table. (Check out the cover for a great picture.) I love this idea! But on the night the first meal is served a long time Sea Harbor resident dies. No one else even got sick, so there is definitely some cause other than the fabulous food. The Seaside Knitters need to find the truth before it not only ruins Birdie’s plans but tears the community apart.

The Seaside Knitters, Izzy, Nell, Cass and Birdie, along with their spouses, significant others, kids and friends are some of the best characters right now in cozy literature. Over the years the group has grown because as a whole they are all so welcoming. Knitting may have brought them together in the beginning but it is their friendships that have stood the test of time. (Don’t worry if you are new to the series or need a little refresher the author includes a cast list as the start of the book.) They welcome someone new to the group this time who seems to be just passing through but ends up staying longer than they planned.

The dialogue between the characters is genuine and smart. They all have different ways to process clues and it is fun to see how it all comes together in the end.

Great dialogue is born from a great story. The murder plot was so well written and knit together with everything else going on is Sea Harbor flawlessly. I really enjoy the way Ms. Goldenbaum tells a story. The death doesn’t happen early in the book. She lets the reader catch up with our favorite characters and all that is happening in their lives before we really need to sink our teeth in to trying to solve the mystery. Then she throws in some twists that have us doing a backstitch or two as she keeps us guessing right to the end.

I have enjoyed every virtual vacation to Sea Harbor. It is a beautiful place to visit full of wonderful people. I am ready to book my next trip there as soon as possible.

Thank you Sally for the wonderful trip!

Petite Protagonists

Xo3GQLA9

girl_grow_taller
The term petite usually refers to a woman who is 5’4″ or less.
Let’s talk about some Petite Protagonists that can back a punch.

I never really thought too much about the heights of cozy protagonists until the start of this year. I was reading Foreign Eclairs by Julie Hyzy and realized again the White House Chef, Ollie Paras, is just 5’3″. Then I picked up For Cheddar or Worse by Avery Aames and cheese shop owner, Charlotte Bessette was just 5’4″. I knew this from reading all the previous books in both series which now have sadly ended. But it got me to thinking. I made myself a note – Pint Size/Petite Protagonists – Research. That’s what I started to do, but soon decided to go right to the source. I emailed the authors and asked them to answer a few questions about our favorite cozy characters. This is just the first post I plan to do with their answers.

Julie also writes the Manor House Mysteries, Grace See Red comes out June 28, 2016. She wrote a post back in December telling us that Ollie’s journey with her as the author was coming to an end. You can read it here. Stay up to date with Julie and her books on her webpage here.

Avery Aames is a pen name, she also writes as herself, Daryl Wood Gerber. Book 5 in the Cookbook Nook Mysteries, Grilling the Subject, will be released on August 2, 2016. Her new suspense/thriller novel, Girl on the Run, was just released on April 9. Avery/Daryl information and news can be found on her webpage here.

Ollie and Charlotte are just 2 of these fantastic vertically challenged heroines. They are joined by Maxine “Max” O’Hara who stars in the Brewing Trouble Mysteries by Joyce Tremel. Max is a certified brewmaster and owner of the Allegheny Brew House and quite an amateur sleuth. To Brew or Not to Brew was released in December and Tangled Up in Brew will be out in October. I really enjoyed the first book in the series. You can read my review here.  Stay up with what’s brewing on Joyce’s webpage here.

We also have Julia Snowden, Manager of the Snowden Family Clambake, from Barbara Ross’s Clambake Mystery Series. The latest book in this series was Fogged Inn. It takes place in the off-season so we meet some new characters. I have enjoyed every book in this series. If this series is new to you, start with the first book, Clammed Up.  Find our more about Barbara and her books on her webpage here.

The latest Soup Lover’s Mystery just came out this month. A Clue in the Stew, has 5′ 4″ Lucky Jamieson hosting an event with a famous author. Set in Vermont, soup is great any day, mixed with murder these stories are always a tasty treat. There are 5 books in this series starting with A Spoonful of Murder, followed by A Broth of Betrayal, A Roux of Revenge, Ladle to the Grave, and the new A Clue in the Stew. Check out Connie’s webpage to find about more about her and her books here. She is also at work on a new mystery series, written as Connie di Marco. The Madness of Mercury comes out June 8 from Midnight Ink.

Jillian Hart is the perfect petite protagonist in the long running Cats in Trouble Mystery Series. She is also 5’4″ and has gone through so much in the first 7 books in this series. The Cat, The Collector and the Killer hits shelves on August 2, and I can’t wait to see what trouble she and the cats get into next. Love cats and mystery but haven’t tried these yet? Start with The Cat, The Quilt, and The Corpse, then you will want to read them all. Visit Leann’s webpage to learn more about her and her books here.

Kiki Lowenstein, standing tall at 5’3″, has been around the cozy world for a long time. Joanna Campbell Slan introduced us to her back in 2008 in Paper, Scissors, Death. Kiki loves her scrapbooking and she put herself into some perilous places,  Joanna is hard at work on Glue, Baby, Gone, the 12th story in this series. She is also offering quite a deal with Shotgun Wedding Bells. Buy One/Get One Offer–With this title, you’ll also automatically get a free copy of “Tear Down and Die,” the first book in a new series. You can find out more about Joanna and her books on her webpage here.

The Farmers’ Market Mysteries feature 5’3″ Becca Robins.  She sells her jams and jellies at the Farm Market her sister manages. Sadly this is another series that has ended. I really loved these stories. Just because they have ended doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this protag’s adventures. Paige does have 2 new mystery series. The Cracked Spine: A Scottish Bookshop Mystery came out on March 29 and To Helvetica and Back (A Dangerous Type Mystery) was released January 5, 2016. You can find out more about Paige and her books on her webpage here

Kelsey Cambridge is the museum director in the Living History Museum Mysteries by Amanda Flower. The first book, The Final Reveille, featuring a Civil War reenactment came out last year. The 2nd book, The Final Tap, comes out May 8th and  it’s maple sugar season! This pint sized sleuth has found herself in a sticky situation. Amanda Flower also writes the Magical Bookshop Mysteries. The debut, Crime and Poetry,  was just released this month. Check out her webpage here to find out about all her books , even those written as Isabella Alan.

The last petite protagonist I am featuring today is Val Deniston from the Five-Ingredient Mysteries. Former cookbook publicist has come to Bayport and works at the Cool Down Café at the local fitness club. She is also working on her own cookbook. We also meet her curmudgeonly grandfather. By Cook or By Crook, is the first installment in this series, followed by Scam Chowder. Final Fondue will be out June 28, 2016. Find out more about Maya and here books on her webpage here

These protagonists may be “vertically challenged” but they sure can take care of themselves for the most part when it comes to tracking down murderers. I happen to know some pint-sized young women who have chosen law enforcement as their profession in real life. One is a State Trooper and another graduates college next year with a degree in Criminal Justice. I have seen them in action and know they can handle their jobs as well as a full size man. So why not have this happen in our cozies.

In both cases, backup is always a good idea. Whether is be another squad car arriving or your boyfriend/brother/best friend/detective/ or some other fantastic character showing up for the assist. All I know is that I am fine reading about the crimes, I don’t need to be in the middle of them. I will leave that to these fantastic protagonists.

This is not a complete list. If you know of other Petite Protags please share them in the comments below.

On Houseboat Row by Lucy Burdette

IMG_0273Because the theme of this blog is “escaping” to read, I thought you might be interested in hearing—and seeing—more about where food critic Hayley Snow lives. She shares a houseboat on Houseboat Row with her octagenarian roommate, Miss Gloria.

IMG_0040Even though the characters and story in KILLER TAKEOUT are fictional, Houseboat Row really exists! Although this hodgepodge collection of boats sits on a busy corner (Palm Avenue and S. Roosevelt Blvd. for those who know Key West), once you step off the parking lot and onto the docks, the weight of the the world slides off your back. I imagine Hayley and Miss Gloria living on a little yellow one-story boat, with two bedrooms, a living area, and a galley kitchen. At the far end of the boat is a small deck where Miss Gloria grows tomatoes and herbs. At the other end, the deck is larger, big enough for a dining table and some chairs to lounge in and watch the world go by.

IMG_0045Many a dinner party has been thrown on the deck over the course of the series, and KILLER TAKEOUT is no exception. In fact, since the book takes place during the crazy, hectic Fantasy Fest week, Hayley and Miss Gloria retreat to their boat frequently, often joined by family and friends.

FullSizeRenderWe all hope you’ll enjoy your seventh visit to Key West and even imagine yourself as one of the neighbors…

It’s Fantasy Fest at Key West, and food critic Hayley Snow is ready to celebrate. But a killer seems intent on crashing the party. . .

Every year, Key West’s weeklong Mardi Gras–style festival has tourists and locals alike lining up for costumed revelry and delicious eats. Key Zest magazine has assigned Hayley to write a piece on the fest’s grab-and-go food, so she’s planning on hitting up the mobile eateries while checking out the party preparations.

Hayley’s office mate, Danielle, recently elected Queen of Fantasy Fest, is also buzzing between festivities and fundraisers.  But when a former royal rival gets taken out, Hayley needs to put down her party hat and her pen and figure out who served up a side of murder—before Danielle gets crowned a killer. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Zombies, a hurricane, and murder! OH MY!! This story is “KILLER”!!!

Never a dull moment in Key West, but Halloween seems extra special. The week plus long event, Fantasy Fest, includes great food and drink, several events each day and costumes that are fun, scary, and some downright risqué.  Hayley Snow is right in the middle of it all. She is reviewing places that serve takeout for Key Zest. Everything from food trucks to restaurants. She is also covering and participating in several events.

Her coworker Danielle was elected Queen of Fantasy Fest after weeks of fundraising but she seems to have made an enemy. Another contestant is not taking her loss well and making Danielle miserable.

Hayley dons makeup to zombify herself and takes part in the Zombie Bicycle Ride. Alcohol, costume restraints, or lack of balance has zombies tumbling everywhere. One right by Hayley so she stops to help. It takes awhile but she realizes it is the woman that has been bullying Danielle. When she dies police think there may have been foul play and Danielle is their main suspect. Hayley quickly starts her own investigation.

Oh and in addition to that and work, her mother has arrived in Key West with her fiancé for their wedding, and Hurricane Margaret is brewing and Key West is in it’s path.

Lucy Burdette has filled these pages full. What a fantastic story!

All our favorite characters are back and Key West is full of tourists too. I absolutely love Miss Gloria. She is over 80 and Hayley has a hard time keeping up with her.  Hayley and Bransford’s romance has some bumps and there is some trouble at Key Zest, I really enjoyed all the dialogue. The characters continue to grow and even after 7 stories they are fresh and interesting. I would love to be friends with all of them.

The subplots entwine so comfortably with the main plot. Don’t interpret that to mean there is not excitement because there is plenty of that. I couldn’t believe how quickly I flew through this book. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. It was after midnight and I kept telling myself just one more chapter, just one more chapter, and soon I was to the recipes.

Don’t miss this one! Pack your virtual bags and head to Key West and enjoy!! Be sure to send me a postcard (comment) telling me all about your trip!!

perfect 2016
