Synopsis:

Down the mountain from Sweet Pepper, Tennessee is Christmas Tree Valley, a place filled with hundreds of Christmas tree farms where generations of growers have made people’s lives brighter. Yet even here in this quiet, postcard-perfect corner of the world, darkness and murder can still stalk the night.

Federal Wildlife Agent Bonnie Tuttle has always had a special gift with wild animals. It was one of the reasons she decided to train with the wildlife agency. She’s spent the last ten years in Alabama working, but her mother needs her home and she’s back despite all the bad parts of her life she hoped to leave behind.

Her first day home begins with a fire on the island in Sweet Pepper Lake and the death of Harvey Shelton, the wildlife agent she’s supposed to replace. Bonnie manages to rescue dozens of animals from the fire – including a wolf pup that was shot with the same bullet that killed Harvey.

Now she’s hot on the trail of Harvey’s killer and trying to reintegrate the wolf back into the wild even though he seems to want to stay with her. Yet old memories persist in the small community where she grew up, and the killer now seems to believe that she has what he killed Harvey for. All she has to do is figure out what that is before it’s too late.

Christmas Recipes included!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am a huge fan of the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries by J.J. Cook, aka Joyce and Jim Lavene, so when I heard they were spinning off another series set nearby in Christmas Tree Valley I was over the moon!

We first met Bonnie Tuttle in the Biscuit Bowl Mystery Series. Now the Federal Wildlife Agent comes home to the valley after being away in Alabama for years. Her mother is starting to show signs of Alzheimers and her brother has taken a new job in Germany. Bonnie is taking Harvey Shelton’s place as wildlife agent and will also be running the family’s Christmas tree farm. Maybe everyone has forgotten why she left or she will be too busy to care if they do remember.

She is thrust right into her new job when there is a fire and several animals need to be rescued. She heads to the scene with Harvey. Shorty after they arrive gunshots ring out and Harvey is hit and killed. A wolf pup is also shot and Bonnie finds herself with a new friend as she takes care of him. Who would want to kill Harvey? Bonnie tries to see the forest through the trees to catch the killer before she or anyone else is fired upon.

What an amazing story!

All our favorite characters from Sweet Pepper welcome Bonnie to the area.  Fire Chief, Stella Griffin, the ghost of former Fire Chief Eric Gamlyn and Police Chief Don Rogers throw out the welcome mat and then chaos erupts as the fire call comes in and the mayhem continues. These characters are already near and dear to my heart. They are wonderfully written and spring right from the pages.

Winter in Christmas Tree Valley is dangerous because the road can snow shut or be covered with ice or both. The road was closed before Bonnie could even get home the first day. The Lavene’s paint pictures of the scenery so clear with their words. The blustery wind, the frigid cold, I was almost shivering myself. They also brought the valley to life. I could envision the tree farms, Harvey’s cabin office, and all the beautiful sites as we traveled down the hill from Sweet Pepper.

The mystery itself played out in a way I never suspected. Such good twists and turns. I can’t say more because I am afraid I will say too much.

An awesome cozy story! Mystery with just a flake of folklore and a touch of paranormal and a little romance too. These authors have imaginations that are truly off the charts. They have blended these series together is a wondrous way yet given them the footings to stand on their own. I really like Bonnie and I truly hope Jim and the family keep this series going. I want to visit this area as often as possible.

Note – You do not need to read any of the other books to enjoy this story. It stands alone perfectly.paradise

Cozy Wednesday with Cleo Coyle – Author of Dead to the Last Drop #Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so excited to have Cleo here today to tel you all about her new book!
Escape to Washington with Cleo Coyle and
Coffeehouse Mystery sleuth Clare Cosi #Giveaway, too!

Cleo-Coyle_Dead-to-The-Last-Drop-CoverWhat would you do if a handsome federal agent burst into your shop, offered you his hand, and told you: “Your life is in danger, and you must come away with me now, no questions asked.”

If you’re coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi, and the agent is decorated Detective Mike Quinn, on special assignment with the US Justice Department, you would take his hand and go.

A divorced, single mom in her forties, Clare Cosi is a coffeehouse manager by day, a relentless snoop by night. Dead to the Last Drop marks her 15th adventure, and Marc and I are excited about taking her to our nation’s capital to solve a capital case—one that involves the disappearance of the President’s college-age daughter and the death of a suspicious State Department employee.

If you’re a newcomer to our series, you should have no trouble reading our latest mystery as a stand-alone book. Mike’s story and Clare’s intertwine, putting them both on the run as they attempt to find the President’s daughter, solve a puzzling murder, and remove themselves from two most-wanted lists.

The plot is an exciting escape in itself, but so is the setting. Many of the twists and turns were inspired by my own past experiences while living, studying, and working in Washington.

Now Marc and I invite you to escape with Clare to…

White-House
White House photo courtesy HiraV, Wiki Commons

THE WHITE HOUSE

Clare makes two trips to this grand destination, one at the request of the First Lady, who shares a private lunch with her in the Diplomatic Reception Room, a magnificent oval-shaped space famously redecorated by Jacqueline Kennedy and historically used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his fireside chats.

Cox's-Row-LC

GEORGETOWN

This picturesque Washington neighborhood boasts some of the finest examples of Federal period architecture in the country. Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Graham Bell, and John F. Kennedy are among the neighborhood’s past residents. As for our amateur sleuth, Clare lands a posh housesitting gig on “Cox’s Row” in a charming Georgetown mansion rumored to be part of the Underground Railroad.

Ruby-Slippers
Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers courtesy Wiki Commons

THE SMITHSONIAN

A glittering black-tie party brings Clare to “America’s Attic,” the beloved nickname of our favorite Smithsonian museum, The National Museum of American History. That’s the scene depicted on the cover of Dead to the Last Drop, where Clare witnesses a fateful meeting in front of Dorothy’s famous ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, one of many fascinating exhibits that celebrate American culture, creativity, and cuisine. Yes, cuisine! As a master roaster and expert on the bean, Clare is even asked to contribute her ideas to one of the museum’s temporary exhibits, Coffee and the Presidency.

The-Jazz-SpaceTHE JAZZ SPACE

While this location in our mystery may be fictional, it’s based on an actual, legendary jazz club in DC called Blues Alley. The delectable menu of our fictional Jazz Space becomes an important plot point in Dead to the Last Drop. Check out the book’s appendix for more than 25 delicious recipes, including an outstanding version of Black Magic Cake with a chocolate frosting to die for. And watch for the opening of our virtual Jazz Space on the web.

There are many more fascinating locations in Dead to the Last Drop. Marc and I sincerely hope you will pick up the book for a great escape!

Thanks for dropping by today and thanks especially to Dollycas for being such a kind hostess. May you read (and eat) with joy!

After the White House asks coffeehouse manager and master roaster Clare Cosi to consult on the coffee service for a Rose Garden Wedding, she discovers a historic pot was used as a CIA “dead drop” decades before. Now long-simmering secrets boil over, scalding Clare and the people around her…

Clare’s visit to the nation’s capital is off to a graceful start. Her octogenarian employer is bunking with her in a charming Georgetown mansion, and she’s invited to work with a respected curator on the Smithsonian’s culinary salute to coffee in America.

Unfortunately, Clare’s new Village Blend DC is struggling to earn a profit–until its second floor jazz club attracts a high-profile fan, the college-age daughter of the U.S. President. Clare’s stock rises as the First Lady befriends her, but she soon learns a stark lesson: Washington can be murder.

First a stylish State Department employee suspiciously collapses in her coffeehouse. Then the President’s daughter goes missing. Is she a runaway bride or is something more sinister in play? After another deadly twist, Clare is on the run with her NYPD detective boyfriend. Branded an enemy of the state, she must piece together clues and uncover the truth before her life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness come to a bitter end.

Includes great American recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This book is amazing to the last word!

Clare Cosi, Master Roaster Extraordinaire, has come to Washington D.C. to get Village Blend DC up on it’s feet. She struggles to get control of the kitchen from a chef with a very high opinion of himself and tries to find a way for the jazz club portion to make a profit. Enter a college student who plays like a dream. When Clare finds out the young lady is the daughter of the President she knows there may be an issue with her continuing to play at Village Blend but she never imagined the way things would spiral out of her control.

Brew a full pot of coffee and be prepared for an all-nighter when you start reading Dead to the Last Drop. Cleo Coyle has written her best book yet and that is saying a lot because every story in this series is excellent.

Clare takes us all over DC, The White House, The Smithsonian, a beautiful mansion in Georgetown. She also travels around some less noteworthy parts of the area as she tries to solve the mysteries that have surrounded her.

This story is jam-packed with drama, action, and mayhem. It all happens at a pretty fast pace too. Intermixed with all the havoc is wonderful food and music. I could almost hear the band, smell the coffee and taste the glorious food.

Clare’s boyfriend, Detective Mike Quinn, is still working with the FBI in Washington. This is a good thing because they both need each other as things start to get crazy. Employees from New York come down to help with a major event and that includes Clare’s ex, Matt. We also meet some Washington elite, the First Family, and some of the White House staff. Again these characters leap off the pages.

If you are new to the series it is not too late to jump in, each story contains enough detail that will get you up to speed in no time. If you are already a fan you are probably waiting very impatiently for your pre-ordered copy to arrive. December 1 will be here soon. I will also add a book is a great holiday gift idea, coffee/cozy mystery buffs will love this story.

This story has earned my Paradise rating. Its contents are truly off the charts!

Rich and flamboyant Honeybelle Hensley, the most colorful character in Mule Stop, Texas, dies a suspicious death and enrages the whole town by leaving her worldly fortune to the most undeserving recipient-her dog. The incorrigible Miss Ruffles is a Texas Cattle Cur, not a cuddly lapdog, and when Honeybelle was alive, Miss Ruffles liked nothing better than digging up Honeybelle’s famous rose garden after breakfast, chasing off the UPS man before lunch and terrorizing the many gentleman callers who came knocking at cocktail hour.

But now Miss Ruffles is in danger, and it’s up to Sunny McKillip, the unwilling dogsitter, to keep her safe. Sunny is new to Texas, and sometimes she feels as if she’s fallen into an alien world. If it isn’t the pistol-packing football fans and the sweet-talking, yet ruthless ladies of the garden club who confound her, it’s the rowdy rodeo hounds and the tobacco-spitting curmudgeon at Critter Control who have her buffaloed. With a killer on the loose and a cowboy lawyer keeping a suspicious eye on her every move, Sunny needs all the help she can get understanding how Texans think. There’s more to Honeybelle’s death than meets this Yankee’s eye, and Sunny has Miss Ruffles to protect, too. It’s a bucking bull ride of an adventure for Sunny, and if she’s not careful she might just get killed . . . or her heart lassoed.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I absolutely loved this story!

Welcome to Mule Stop where football is king and Honeybelle Hensley is queen. She is a very rich lady that is very generous with her money. She also has the most wonderful dog, a Texas Cattle Cur, named Miss Ruffles. Miss Ruffles can be a handful so Honeybelle has hired Sunny McKillip to be her assistant/dogsitter. Sunny hails from Ohio and is still learning the ways of Texas. When Honeybell dies suddenly Sunny is the only one who thinks it is suspicious. Is it a Southern thing? When the will is read and the terms are revealed Sunny has even more on the line and she needs to know if there if Honeybelle was killed for her money because if she was there is so much more at stake.

Nancy Martin has scored a touchdown with Miss Ruffles Inherits Everything! I love Honeybelle, Sunny, Ten, and even curmudgeonly Mae Mae and Mr. Carver, but I adore Miss Ruffles most of all. These characters jumped right out of the pages and into my heart.

I was so sad when Homeybelle died but that set up all the high jinx that would soon follow. In addition to trying to find the killer Sunny has to deal with two guys following her trying to collect a debt of her dead mother’s, deal with the crazy people at the university because Miss Ruffles is the team mascot, and deal with Honeybelle’s family who are upset about her will and much, much more. The pace throughout the entire book is pretty brisk and so entertaining. The final twist is spectacular!

I have to just say Honeybelle’s home and garden sounds just amazing. I had a very clear picture in my mind. I could even smell the roses.

Nancy Martin written almost 50 novels so she know how to tell a story.  Things may be big in Texas but I am a pretty big fan up here in Wisconsin. This is one I am shouting from the rooftops about!!

Review – The Paris Key by Juliet Blackwell

Trade Paperback: 384 pages

An American in Paris navigates her family’s secret past and unlocks her own future, in this emotionally evocative novel by New York Times bestselling author Juliet Blackwell.

As a girl, Genevieve Martin spent the happiest summer of her life in Paris, learning the delicate art of locksmithing at her uncle’s side. But since then, living back in the States, she has become more private, more subdued. She has been an observer of life rather than an active participant, holding herself back from those around her, including her soon-to-be-ex-husband.

Paris never really left Genevieve, and, as her marriage crumbles, she finds herself faced with an incredible opportunity: return to the magical city of her youth to take over her late uncle’s shop. But as she absorbs all that Parisian culture has to offer, she realizes the city also holds secrets about her family that could change her forever, and that locked doors can protect you or imprison you, depending on which side of them you stand.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Genevieve Martin returns to Paris after her uncle passes away to take over his locksmith shop. There is so much bureaucratic red tape for her to be able to work as a locksmith in Paris so she is unsure how long she will actually be able to stay, but she hopes things work out. Her aunt is in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s and her cousin has no desire to take over her father’s business. Before Genevieve has time to sleep off the jet lag she has customers at her door. The neighbors are friendly for the most part and take her under their wing.  She tries to settle in but then she starts to discover secrets about her mother that could change her entire life. What a story!!!

The story travels between Genevieve’s life now, and when she visited Paris in 1997, and her mother Angela’s life in the early 80’s. It does get a little confusing at times because so many people intersect over all three time periods but the chapters are clearly labeled which helps. These are rich characters and some things they go through are heartbreaking. They both have escaped to Paris, Angela questioning her life and her marriage, Genevieve after her mother dies and now as her divorce is close to final. It was so nice to see Paris through their eyes. The descriptions were vivid and easy to envision. How different things looked from Genevieve the child to Genevieve the adult. Love for Paris shines brightly.

The story itself was all about family, the journey, the good times and the bad, unlocking memories and secrets. This story has much more depth than I originally expected.  I found myself absolutely and totally escaping into this book.  I have enjoyed Juliet Blackwell’s mysteries so I knew I would enjoy the story but I was truly blown away. I hated to reach the last page.  I have never been to Paris but after reading this book I hope to travel there someday.

Thank you Ms. Blackwell for taking me on this amazing journey.

Synopsis
Paramedic Zoe Chambers is used to saving lives, but when she stops a man from running into a raging inferno in a futile attempt to rescue his wife, Zoe finds herself drawn to him, and even more so to his ten-year-old daughter. She invites them both to live at the farm while the grieving widower picks up the pieces of his life.

Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams, of course, is not happy with this setup, especially when he finds evidence implicating Zoe’s new houseguest in murder times two. When Zoe ignores Pete’s dire warnings, she runs the very real chance of burning one too many bridges, losing everything—and everyone—she holds dear.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is the third book in this series and it really kept me on my toes.

Zoe and Pete are trying to take their relationship to the next level but keep facing roadblock after roadblock. One major roadblock occurs when Zoe decides to help a man and his daughter after his wife dies in a tragic fire. Pete just doesn’t trust the guy and Zoe is following her gut instinct. When the evidence starts to point to the man Pete turns up the heat to keep him away from Zoe but she douses the flames by basically telling Pete to back off. Is her gut wrong? Is she the one that is going to get burned?

Annette Dashofy has pumped up this story with a huge bucket of suspense. I actually felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. Almost wanting to cover my eyes when I knew Zoe was going to take a huge dangerous step, or try to keep someone from barreling into a hazardous situation.

Zoe is such a strong woman and the author has written her so beautifully that we get to see her vulnerable side too. Her life could be in for some major changes but she continues to push ahead. Pete is strong as well and that is why they sometimes clash, he also cares deeply for Zoe but needs to learn to trust her. We see a bit of jealously rear its ugly head.

The supporting cast are also so well written. Zoe lives in a divided farmhouse where she also boards her horse. She helps out her landlord’s, the Kroll’s, by giving riding lessons and mucking out the stalls. The Kroll’s are facing hard times due to Mr. Kroll’s hospitalization and Mrs. Kroll is more worried about her husband than the bills that are stacking up. Mrs. Kroll becomes a key character in this story. We also meet Holt and Maddie Farabee. Maddie turns out to be a very wise 10 year old.

Dashofy is such a fantastic storyteller. The plot is full of twists and those anxious moments when the pages just can’t seem to fly fast enough. There was more than one point where I would feel my heart racing and my mind trying to read faster to see how things were going to play out.

I gave Lost Legacy, the second book in this series a Paradise Rating and this one has to get the same. Annette Dashofy has set the bar high. I cannot wait to see what she has planned for Zoe, Pete, and the rest Vance Township next.

The Chill That Started It All
By Laura Bradford

Nineteen years ago, Sadie Lehman simply up and disappeared during her Rumspringa in the Amish community of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. Led to believe her daughter had gotten caught up in the English world by the girl’s peers, Waneta clung to hope that one day Sadie would come back.

Yet while Waneta prayed for a reunion, Sadie’s friends hoped for something very different—that Sadie’s body would never be discovered.

It’s funny how an entire story can grow from just one thought, but that’s exactly how the plot for Suspendered Sentence (the 4th book in my Amish Mysteries) was born—on that very premise I just shared with you.

And from that one thought, came consternation (how could Sadie’s friends say nothing for nineteen long years?), anger (Waneta was left to hope for something that would never be!), a quest for answers (how did Sadie die?), and a desire for justice (for Sadie, for Waneta, and for…well, I’ll let you read the book to find that out).

I love it when a plot line fires me up the way this one did. I love the way my research of the law for this particular crime left me stunned. And I love the way those two emotions came together into a story that ends up affecting the lives of so many people in Heavenly. In fact, it’s safe to say, that some lives in this quiet, picturesque community will never be the same.

Because of a secret…

A secret that didn’t need to be kept…

A secret that ultimately cost someone their life, and another person their wife

Honestly, I’m getting goose bumps just thinking about this story all over again. So if you’ve been waiting to try one of my Amish Mysteries, I hope you give Suspendered Sentence a try.  If you’re already a fan of the series, then fasten your cozy seatbelt and enjoy the ride!

The national bestselling author of Shunned and Dangerous returns to the Amish community of Heavenly, Pennsylvania, where shop owner Claire Weatherly has come to appreciate a simpler, more peaceful way of life. But dark secrets are about to complicate things—and lead to murder…

After the Stoltzfus barn catches fire, Claire is awed by the response of the community. Hundreds of Amish men gather together to raise a new barn for the family in a matter of days. But in the midst of the work, a human skeleton is unearthed. Found with the remains is half of a friendship bracelet last seen on Sadie Lehman, an Amish teen long believed to have left her strict upbringing for the allure of English ways.

Now Detective Jakob Fisher—once a member of the Amish community himself—is determined to solve the young woman’s murder. With Claire’s help, he must dig into the past and bring to light long-buried secrets—secrets that someone is willing to kill to protect…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Laura Bradford continues top herself again and again.

In this story Clare is awed by the Amish community as the all turn out to replace a barn in just a few days. I am in awe of the way Bradford makes these characters so real, so genuine, so inspiring and heartwarming. The Amish community is rocked when a the remains of a girl are found. You can’t help grieving for her parents. Claire and Jakob try so hard to figure out what happened and it takes them right into the heart of the community that has shunned Jakob.

The author continues to go delve into a culture most people don’t know much about and she does it in almost a loving way. Like her character Claire she is looking in from the outside and her fascination shines through each and every page.

Like all of her stories the mystery is thought out and well plotted. The reader almost hangs on every word. The twists this time are take a very troubling path and to me were heart wrenching. My emotions ran the gambit. That to me that is the true determination of a great story.  I was moved by this story and it will stick with me.

In addition to the main plot there is also a subplot where Jakob and Claire are exploring or starting more of a romantic relationship. I was delighted by this.

Suspendered Sentence can be read as a stand alone by why deprive yourself from the reading this fantastic series from the start. This one will be on my Best Reads of 2015 list like Shunned and Dangerous was a Best Read last year. Every book in this series is outstanding!

Gianna Mancini has chatted with ghosts most of her life. It’s never affected her much. Until now.

The latest ghost in Gianna’s family-centric, boy-complicated, job-depleted world is Emma Tinsdale, a woman Gianna despises. Wanting Emma out of her apartment and her orbit, Gianna chooses to help her move on, but she doesn’t expect to come across poisonous jam, a vengeful cop, or a group of friendly clowns.

When a relative is framed for Emma’s death, Gianna must dig deeper and faster to find out what really happened that fatal night on the beach. With help from her sister, her cop brother, and her ex-boyfriend, Julian, she gets close to figuring out the truth. But when the killer closes in, Gianna better watch her step unless she wants to become the latest member of the dearly departed.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I absolutely, positively, loved this book!!

Gianna has a very unique gift as does her family’s deli. Gianna’s gift is that she can see and talk to ghosts, to find out the deli’s special “gift” you have to read the book.

Gianna has come back home and moved into the small apartment above the deli. She is surprised to learn she already has a spirit as a roommate, but it is better than staying with her parents. Her sister and niece have moved home due to some trouble with her husband and that makes things at home just a little too crowded. She still hangs out with her sister though. In fact, they had a girl’s night out that included quite a bit of drama and ended up with them asleep on the beach. When they woke up and headed home they thought their only problem was a little sand in their clothes. Then a body is found on that very same beach not far from where they slept and the victim happens to been part of the drama the night before. The victim’s ghost also finds their way to Gianna’s apartment and has no idea who killed them. When the police start to suspect someone very close to Gianna she has no choice  but to unofficially help point the police, including her own cop brother, in another direction. It may also help a ghost or two move on and let her finally have her apartment to herself.

This was a fantastic read. It was funny in many places but also had many places that touched my heart.

All the characters were so well developed, even those than only Gianna could see. We get to know them all so well it is very easy to be invested into each and every one of them. Gianna is complicated as is her relationship with her ex. Her family is close, sometimes too close, but isn’t that how most families are. What Gianna does for these ghosts that just happen to find their way to her is amazing – finding out what is holding them back from crossing over and trying to help them make that very necessary transition. A gift that causes her to have some very haunting dreams.

As to the mystery surrounding the killer that is very complex as well with several twists and turns and a surprise. Oh my when I figured out just a few pages before Gianna I almost shouted it out loud. I love stories that surprise me like this one.

This book is shorter than the normal cozy mystery but the story was not lacking anywhere, in fact it soared beyond my expectations. And if this story wasn’t amazing on its own the author leaves us with a cliffhanger that has me waiting very impatiently for the next installment. I will drop whatever I am reading the minute it becomes available to read it!

I know it is early in the year but this is an outstanding debut to this series and for that reason it gets my first paradise rating of 2015.

When coffeehouse manager turned amateur sleuth Clare Cosi roasts “magic” beans for a Fairy Tale Fall event, she brews up a vision that leads to a sleeping beauty in Central Park; a big, bad wolf of Wall Street; and an East Side enclave with storybook secrets…

Fairy tale fever has descended on New York City. Broadway fans are flocking to Red Riding Hood: The Musical; museums are exhibiting art inspired by the Brothers Grimm; and Clare Cosi and her merry band of baristas give their coffee truck a “Jack and the Beanstalk” makeover for a Central Park festival. Clare’s coffee hunter ex-husband contributes a bag of African beans with alleged magical properties. His octogenarian mother entertains customers with readings of the grinds, but Clare remains skeptical–until she receives a vision that helps her find a young model’s body in the park’s woods.

The police dismiss “sleeping beauty” as the victim of a drug overdose. Then Clare uncovers evidence that points to a list of suspects–from a New York Giant to quite a few wicked witches–and a cold case murder that reaches back to the Cold War. Now Clare is really in the woods with a dangerous predator on her heels and an investigation that leads from a secret Prince Charming Club right back to her own NYPD detective boyfriend. If she doesn’t solve this mystery, those magic beans predict an unhappy ending.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was an truly enchanting story and so much fun to read! I stayed up until early in the morning reading telling myself “just one more chapter” again and again. It is stories like this one that give readers like me “book hangovers” but they are so worth it.

Clare and the Village Blend crew are taking part in the Fairy Tale Fall Event in Central Park. The  coffee truck has a Jack and A Beanstalk theme complete with magic coffee beans and coffee grind readings. All is going well until Clare’s ex-husband is pulled in to replace a Prince Charming that failed to show up at the festival. He is paired with a beautiful princess for most of the day and then she goes missing. The search is on until they find the “sleepy beauty” in the dense part of woods in the park. Only she is not sleeping, she is dead and Clare’s ex becomes the prime suspect in her demise. The magic coffee beans and the visions they give Clare not only helped find the missing princess but they may help her to find the real killer.

So much happens in this story but it unfolds so naturally it is not overwhelming at all. The clues lead to a secret club and a cold case murder. Clare’s boyfriend, Detective Mike Quinn, is on temporary assignment in Washington D.C. but he is still head of a task force for the New York Police Department so he is up to speed on this case. In fact his ex-wife may even be involved since the princess who died was also working as a mother’s helper for her taking care of his kids. Coyle has woven quite a tangled web in this mystery linking people and events together you would never imagine and Clare is right in the middle of it all.

There are also things going on outside the main mystery. The subplots deal with some Village Blend employee drama and decision Clare is wrestling with. Matt and Clare may not be romantically involved anymore but they do work well together. I really admire the way the authors have thought outside of the box and let their characters evolve in many directions. It keeps this series fresh and each book better than the last.

This is a must read for cozy lovers. Whether you have read all the books in this series or this is your first Cofffeehouse Mystery I just know you will love this story. Just a little warning – this is not a book you can read a few chapters and set it aside. This writing team uses the same technique as suspense/thriller authors like James Patterson. Short chapters that lead right into the next one and the next one and the next one and before you know you are at the end. So don’t start this book if you have to work the next morning. This is the perfect book for a lazy weekend day snuggled up in front of your fireplace in a comfy chair. 10 Starfish!!

Cozy Wednesday with Kathleen Ernst – Author of Tradition of Deceit – Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am always excited when Kathleen Ernst drops by for a visit. Her character Chloe Ellefson doesn’t live too far away from me. I love reading stories about places I have actually visited.

Old Mill-50Murder Most Midwestern
Kathleen Ernst

You may have heard of “Midwestern Nice.” It’s real. I’ve met lots of really nice people since moving to Wisconsin in 1982.

That said, I’m finding that the Midwest provides some awesome settings for murder mysteries.

As a former museum curator, one of my goals for the Chloe Ellefson Historic Sites mystery series involves introducing readers to special places. The first four books in the series showcased a huge open air museum called Old World Wisconsin, the Swiss-American community of New Glarus, Lake Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, and Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Iowa.

Old Mill-139And my new book, Tradition of Deceit, features two fascinating settings. The book is set in 1983, when the Minnesota Historical Society’s fabulous Mill City Museum was only a dream. Chloe, my protagonist, visits to help create an interpretive plan for the envisioned site. Imagine an enormous abandoned flour mill full of old equipment—a magnet for kids craving adventure, homeless citizens, and people wanting to stay out of sight. It’s spooky. And it provides lots of opportunities for murder.

Tradition of DeceitIt’s also fascinating. The Washburn A Mill was the world’s largest flour mill when it was completed in 1874. For the first time in history, the production of a basic food item was industrialized. And I’m willing to bet that the mill has touched your life directly. The Washburn A Mill gave us Gold Medal Flour and Betty Crocker cookbooks. After years of growth and mergers, General Mills became owner.

Meanwhile Roelke McKenna, Chloe’s significant other, is drawn into a murder investigation in Milwaukee’s Old South Side neighborhood. The area is densely populated and culturally rich, home to many Polish-American families. They built the magnificent Basilica of St. Josaphat, and created a lovely urban park honoring a famous Polish general. Right down the street is a cemetery so old and significant that it’s on the Register of Historic Places.

It was great fun to write a book that entwines the industrial and cultural heritage of two cities, in two states. In the Chloe Ellefson mysteries, the past is always present!

Someone asked me recently if I would ever set a Chloe book at a “major” historic site like Colonial Williamsburg or Plimoth Plantation. Perhaps one day, but for now, I’m having too much fun exploring historic sites in my own regional neighborhood. Chloe will remain employed at Old World Wisconsin, although some mysteries will take her across state lines.

I try hard to make the sites and museums that Chloe explores real and essential to the plot. My website offers lots of resources to help readers explore the places featured in each book, including photographs, interactive maps, and tour guides. I’m delighted when readers tell me that reading one of the Chloe Ellefson mysteries inspired them to visit the relevant site.

Has a book ever prompted you to make a trip? What are some of your favorite historic places? I’m taking notes!

~Kathleen

Curator and occasional sleuth Chloe Ellefson is off to Minneapolis to help her friend Ariel with a monumental task. Ariel must write a proposal for a controversial and expensive restoration project: convert an abandoned flour mill, currently used as shelter by homeless people, into a museum. When a dead body is found stuffed into a grain chute, Chloe’s attention turns from milling to murder.

Back in Milwaukee, Chloe’s love interest Roelke has been slammed with the news that a fellow officer was shot and killed while on duty. Sifting through clues from both past and present, Chloe and Roelke discover dangerous secrets that put their lives—and their trust in each other—at risk.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Wow, this was such a fascinating read I feel as if I devoured it.

What seems as a ordinary date turns Chloe’s and Roelke’s lives and relationship inside out and upside down. They attend the wedding of one a Roelke’s cop buddies and Chloe just feels like she doesn’t fit in. She takes off the next day to help a friend in Minneapolis questioning her whole relationship with Roelke. Then Roelke gets a phone call telling him his friend and former partner was shot and killed while on duty. He throws himself into the investigation and keeps at it even when he is told to back off. Chloe barely gets into Minneapolis and she gets wrapped up in a murder investigation herself. She really could use Roelke’s help but after the death of his friend he has basically shut her out of his life. It seems “deceit” is everywhere.

Ernst intricately meshes these stories together along with a story from the past that drew me right in. It was not only the murder mysteries that captivated me but the secrets of our main characters as well. We really get to know more about Roelke and Chloe has to face the reality of being in love with a police officer. The story from the past gives us a look back at immigrants that had come to the area in hopes of a better life. The main story lines also look at the homeless and what they endure. She also shines a light on domestic violence.

The main part of the story takes place in the early 1980’s so there are no cell phones or internet which adds its own dynamic to the story. Research and crime investigation is done with old fashioned footwork and checking out books and written documents. Police officers don’t have radios hooked to their collars and need to check in via call stations while they are out “walking their beat” and landlines are the way to get in touch with your family and friends, no texting, emails or quick calls. Cases are not solved quickly as all the investigative technology we now take for granted has even been invented yet. The research Chloe is helping with is also done with document research and stories that have been told and retold over the years.

I think this is the best book so far in this series. The characters continue to grow and evolve and the settings were interesting and the topics are still relevant today as the United States looks at immigration reform and the plight of the homeless is still a major problem today. Domestic violence has been around forever and we see that in that story here as well. Ernst presents all topics in a fictional way that while entertaining to read also makes you think.  We learn a little history along the way too.

This definitely deserves more than 5 stars!

The past has arrived uninvited at Jason Danvers’s door…

…and it’s his younger sister, Hayden, a former addict who severed all contact with her family as her life spiraled out of control. Now she’s clean and sober but in need of a desperate favor—she asks Jason and his wife to take care of her teenage daughter for forty-eight hours while she handles some business in town
But Hayden never returns.

And her disappearance brings up more unresolved problems from Jason’s past, including the abrupt departure of his best friend on their high school graduation night twenty-seven years earlier. When a body is discovered in the woods, the mysteries of his sister’s life—and possible death—deepen. And one by one these events will shatter every expectation Jason has ever had about families, about the awful truths that bind them and the secrets that should be taken to the grave.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

David Bell has become one of my favorite suspense authors. I couldn’t wait to read this book and all my expectations were fully met. He writes these stories that just draw you right in and don”t let go.

All the characters are flawed, some have bigger  problems than others but all are dealing with something. Jason and Nora  moved back to Ohio when their jobs in New York were  eliminated. They never had children, their careers always came first.  Jason and his sister Hayden have not spoken or seen each other in years. She always ran with a group of troublemakers and drugs and alcohol were what controlled her life.  Even her daughter Sierra could not help her stay straight. But now Sierra is 17 years old and Hayden promises she is clean. She just needs to tie up some loose ends and asks Nora and Jason to take in Sierra for 48 hours. But the 48 hours comes and goes and Hayden has not returned. They want to believe she has changed but the doubts are there. Especially when questions are being asked about a friend who disappeared 27 years ago. Can Hayden’s  disappearance be connected to that one? Could Jason have changed the past?

We all remember those parties we attended in high school or college. One party on a graduation night is what starts this whole story in motion.

Bell takes us on quite a trip trying to understand what happened in the past and how it is affecting lives today. Lies, secrets, deception, desperation and fear all play huge parts of this thrilling mystery.

The story has layers making readers really pay attention and even making us read between the lines. The crazy twists that I have come to expect from this author turn things upside town and inside out.  He weaves together the past and present with such precision and makes this book almost impossible to put down. At over 400 pages I knew I was going to have to break it up over 2 or 3 nights but it was so hard and I didn’t want to do anything like work during the day, I just wanted to get back to reading this book. The was more than one time I was on the edge of my seat. One chapter would end and I would think just one more and then it was one more. I read it in two nights but this book has stuck with me for days.

David Bell is a fantastic storyteller that continues to top himself with each new mystery. This one deserves more than 5 stars! I truly cannot wait to see what this man comes up with next.
