Paranormal Mystery

Setting – Georgia

Publisher: Camel Press (August 1, 2017)
Paperback: 312 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1603815932

Amateur sleuth Baxley Powell is on vacation at Stony Creek Lake in the north Georgia mountains. Her parents, best friend, and ten-year-old daughter are camping with her. Almost immediately, a young man’s body is found beside the lake. Strangely, there’s no apparent cause of death. The local police have heard about Baxley’s skill at closing unusual cases, and at their urging she agrees to help.

Her psychic sleuthing leads the police to a halfway house. There they encounter eight comatose victims and an odd man named Jonas, who also has supernatural abilities. Baxley senses Jonas cruelly drained their life force energy. Jonas escapes, taking the sheriff as a hostage. Deputy Sam Mayes, a Native American, leads the manhunt, and he keeps Baxley close, knowing she’s the key to capturing this powerful criminal.

Baxley’s paranormal talent of dreamwalking, which she uses to traverse the veil of life, draws the unwanted attention of beings believed to be Cherokee folklore. Jonas stole a treasured artifact from them, and they want it back. They hold Baxley’s best friend and two others because they know Baxley can help them. As the clock ticks, Jonas taunts this crime-fighting duo and proves to be a wily adversary.

With the body count rising, Baxley and Mayes realize they are up against an entity who appears to be invincible. Do they have the power to subdue an energy vampire, turn the tide of evil, and save the day?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Baxley Powell can’t even go on vacation without being drawn into an investigation. This time people are dying without any trauma to their bodies. She is asked to dreamwalk with the latest victim to try and get some answers. Her walk leads her to some scary and unbelievable places both in the present and beyond the veil.

Maggie Toussaint has an extraordinary imagination and I can’t help but follow her with mine right into this story.

The Powell family seems to be an ordinary American family but they are not. Each has their special gifts to communicate with the supernatural realm and with each other. Now that more people know of her talents Baxley’s demands on her time are almost overwhelming. While on vacation the local sheriff arrests her to convince her to help them on a case, while a pushy medical examiner demands help on a cold case. She has dealt with the medical examiner before, I didn’t like her much then and my feelings haven’t changed. All the characters the author brings to this story are special and different in their own ways. Readers will like most but there are a few to really dislike as well.

The mystery itself was very complex mixing Cherokee folklore with other supernatural elements. The way the author made these other worlds come to life is really unique. The dialogue was so well written.  The plot has some surprising twists and very fearful moments.  This story is sure to be a hit among paranormal/supernatural fans.

As this is a series I do recommend reading them in order but this book can be read all on its own.

Murder, like history, often repeats itself. And, when it does, it’s the worst kind of murder.

Detective Richard Jax was never good at history—but, after years as a cop, he is about to get the lesson of his life. Ambushed and dying on a stakeout, he’s saved by Captain Patrick “Trick” McCall—the ghost of a World War II OSS agent. Trick has been waiting since 1944 for a chance to solve his own murder. Soon Jax is a suspect in a string of murders—murders linked to smuggling refugees out of the Middle East—a plot similar to the World War II OSS operation that brought scientists out of war-torn Europe. With the aid of a beautiful and intelligent historian, Dr. Alex Vouros, Jax and Trick unravel a seventy-year-old plot that began with Trick’s murder in 1944. Could the World War II mastermind, code named Harriet, be alive and up to old games? Is history repeating itself?

Together, Jax and Trick hunt for the link between their pasts—confronted by some of Washington’s elite and one provocative, alluring French Underground agent, Abrielle Chanoux. Somewhere in Trick’s memories is a traitor. That traitor killed him. That traitor is killing again. Who framed Jax and who wants Trick’s secret to remain secret? The answer may be, who doesn’t?

#Review – The House of Memory by Carolyn Haines

The House of Memory (Pluto’s Snitch)
Paranormal Historical Mystery/Suspense
2nd in Series
Setting – Alabama
Thomas & Mercer (June 27, 2017)
Paperback: 316 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1477819937
Kindle ASIN: B01NCIKAQX

Raissa James not only sees the dead but she’s caught the ears of the living—especially now that she’s solved her first case. Word of Pluto’s Snitch, her private-investigation agency specializing in the occult, has spread far and wide. It’s even come to the notice of Zelda Fitzgerald, the nation’s most celebrated flapper. And Zelda’s in need of its services.

Along with Reginald Proctor, her partner in detection, Raissa travels to Montgomery, Alabama, where Zelda’s friend Camilla has suddenly become prone to violent fits and delusions. Has Camilla gone mad…or has she been possessed?

Raissa and Reginald soon discover that Camilla’s not the only young lady in the area to fall victim to something unnatural. Now it’s up to the Snitches to follow the clues and save Camilla, locked away behind the walls of the formidable Bryce Hospital asylum. But the key to her rescue might not lie among the living at all. Because Raissa knows that the dead have their secrets, too.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this second book of this series Pluto’s Snitch is called on by the famous Zelda Fitzgerald. She has asked partners Raissa James and Reginald Proctor to help her friend Camilla. After two unexplainable episodes Camilla’s mother has sent her to the Bryce Hospital asylum thinking that she has gone insane. Her mother gives permission of any and all treatment the will make her daughter docile enough to get married. Raissa and Reginald quickly find this is a difficult case that may involve many more young girls. Putting themselves in danger they are determined not only to save Camilla but as many other girls as they can.

The author takes us back to the roaring 20’s with flappers, prostitution, prohibition, possession, ghosts and more. A time when women were seen but not heard and many were treated a property. She even includes Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald and Tallulah Bankhead in the story. The author brings true history into her stories making them very believable.

What makes the story so interesting is that Raissa has a gift. She can see and hear the dead. Sometimes what she sees is quite graphic and scary but she soldiers on to get the answers she seeks. She has dead people in her dreams too, sometimes they give her more questions than answers but they almost always move her investigation forward.  While Reginald cannot see spirits (yet) he is a critical thinker and has Raissa’s complete trust. Together they make a fine detective team.

Carolyn Haines is very descriptive in everything from the characters to the settings. She has to be for this story to be a success. Pictures were painted in my mind of both the human characters and the spirits. I could also clearly picture everywhere Raissa went from the Sayre house to the asylum.

There was evil at play in this story both in the living and the dead. The plot would make an excellent movie but it would be one I probably would watch peeking through my fingers over my eyes.

A fast read, hard to put down, a chilling story. You may want to read The Book of Beloved first to start this series from the beginning. I highly recommend both.

Cozy Wednesday with Kailyn Wilde – Proprietor of Abracadabra – #Review / #Giveaway (Magick & Mayhem by Sharon Pape)

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
Sharon Pape is busy touring her new book Magick & Mayhem with
Great Escapes Book Tours

so lead character Kailyn Wilde is dropping by for a visit!

Hi there! I’m Kailyn Wilde, proprietor of Abracadabra, the magick shop that’s been run by my family for centuries. By centuries I mean before this country was even a twinkle in the eyes of its creators. My ancestors left England seeking freedom from persecution as so many others have over the years. They settled in the wilderness of upstate New York in what eventually became the little tourist town of New Camel.

No one ever told me how hard dating can be when you’re a sorcerer and you work in the family business  As you might imagine, a magick shop attracts a lot more women than men, so I figure the odds of meeting Mr. Right through my business are fairly low. I dated a number of guys when I was away in college, but the relationships all fizzled before I ever told them about my lineage. I wound up with a great education though, and a degree in botany. Sounds highfalutin, I know, but I use a lot of what I learned to create better products for my shop. In spite of what you may have heard, we don’t really use bats’ wings and newts’ eyes. Yuck!  Those are just fanciful names for plants, names intentionally meant to sound arcane and awful to lay-people. You’ll never find a newt’s eye or a bat’s wing in my shop.

A nosy customer once asked me why I didn’t just conjure up the man of my dreams.  Well, magick doesn’t work that way— at least not white magick. Although members of my family, including yours truly, may have tiptoed over the line into grayish magick a time or two, black magick has never been an option for us. So I’ll just have to wait and see what fate has in store for me.

Lately I’ve had something far more important than dating on my mind anyway. Murder has come to New Camel for the first time in its history. The police are on the case, but so am I. I’m determined to catch the killer before my best friend is arrested for the crime and before frightened tourists decide to pass us by for other quaint towns without our sudden notoriety. Between you and me, I jumped at the chance to investigate the case. I’ve been drawn to mysteries ever since I read my first Nancy Drew book. Drove my mom and grandmother crazy. While other kids dreamed of having magickal powers, I dreamed of solving mysteries and bringing killers to justice.

Oh by the way, now that I have too much else on my plate to think about dating, I’ve met a guy who might just be a keeper! Fate can be a perverse little rascal!

~Kailyn

Magick & Mayhem (An Abracadabra Mystery)
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
New Series
Setting – New York
Publisher: Lyrical Underground (May 2, 2017)
Paperback: 256 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1516100569

Kindle ASIN: B01JWDZSQQ

What’s in a murderer’s bag of tricks?

Twenty-something Kailyn Wilde has learned to embrace her unpredictable life as a descendant of small-town New Camel’s most magickal family. She just didn’t expect to inherit her mother and grandmother’s centuries-old shop, Abracadabra, so suddenly. The surprises keep coming when Kailyn goes to finalize the estate at the local attorney’s office—and stumbles over the body of her best friend Elise’s husband . . .

As a brash detective casts the blame on Elise, Kailyn summons her deepest powers to find answers and start an investigation of her own. What with running a business, perfecting ancient spells, and keeping up with an uninvited guest of fabled origins, Kailyn has her hands full. But with the help of her uncanny black cat Sashkatu and her muumuu-clad Aunt Tilly, she’s closing in on a killer—who will do anything to make sure she never tests her supernatural skills again!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This new series from Sharon Pape is off to a magickal start!

We meet Kailyn Wilde who has inherited the family business due to the unexpected passing of her mother and grandmother. Her Aunt Tilly operates the attached tea room and does readings by appointment. When they arrive at their lawyer’s office to tie up a few loose ends they are shocked to find the man has been murdered very recently. Kaitlyn and the attorney’s wife Elise are best friends and she can’t imagine what she will do without her husband. Then Kailyn realizes the detective on the case thinks Elise is his prime suspect. With Aunt Tilly’s help and a little assistance from Sashkatu, a very special black cat, Kailyn is on a mission to catch the real killer before you can say Abracadabra!

What an enchanting read. I liked Kailyn and Tilly from the beginning and when they are joined by a very special guest the story got even better. Kailyn also has some visits from her dearly departed grandmother and mother that were so funny. All the characters are cleverly written. They reminded me of characters created by the late Joyce and Jim Lavene‘s in their Renaissance series. Fun, quirky, unique and a pleasure to follow around.

The story is full of twists, turns, mystery, and comedy. When magick goes awry you need to be prepared for surprises and the author delivers plenty of those.  The final reveal was dramatic and unexpected. As a fan of this author I expected no less. I have been entertained by every story of hers that I have read.

If you are looking for a lighthearted cozy mystery, you need look no further than Magick & Mayhem. For me the visit to New Camel ended much too soon. I can’t wait to go back again for That Olde White Magick coming this November.

About The Author

I started writing stories as soon as I learned how to put letters together to form words. From that day forward, writing has been a part of my life whether it was my first attempt at a novel in seventh grade or the little plays I wrote for my friends to perform for neighbors and family. After college, when I was busy teaching French and Spanish to high school students, I was also writing poetry — some of it in French.

After several years, I left teaching to be a full time mom, and when my two children started school, I went back to writing. To my delight I found that the muse was still there, still waiting patiently for me to come around. My first novel, Ghostfire, was published at that time. It went on to be condensed in Redbook magazine (the first paperback original the magazine had ever condensed.) Then came The God Children and The Portal. Redbook also published my first short story, which was subsequently sold to several foreign magazines. With two great kids, a golden retriever and a loving, supportive husband (whom I’d met at the beach when I was fourteen — but that’s a story for another day), I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be in my life. But fate had another plan for me, and it went by the name of “breast cancer.”

Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was that the cancer was discovered at such an early stage, but at the time it was all very overwhelming. Once I was back on my feet, I wanted to help other women who were newly diagnosed, worried and afraid. I became a Reach to Recovery volunteer for the American Cancer Society and went on to run the program for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. A number of years later, with the help of my surgical oncologist and two other volunteers, I started Lean On Me, a nonprofit organization that provides peer support and information to breast cancer patients. When Lean On Me celebrated its tenth anniversary it no longer required as much of my time, and I once again found myself free to pursue my first love — writing.

Good thing she has her private practice to fall back on–as a Wiccan. She’ll just have to summon her inner Goddess and set the world to rights. . .

Midsummer Eve is meant for gratitude and celebration, but Keli is not in her typically upbeat mood. The family of a recently deceased client is blaming her for the loss of a Shakespearean heirloom worth millions, and Keli’s career may be on the line. But Keli weaves a tangled web when her investigation brings her up-close and personal with her suspects–including sexy Wes Callahan, her client’s grandson. The tattooed bartender could be the man she’s been looking for in more ways than one. As the sun sets on the mystical holiday, Keli will need just a touch of the divine to ferret out the real villain and return Edindale, and her heart, to a state of perfect harmony. . .

Midsummer Night’s Mischief was a spellbinding mystery that is sure to keep you in suspense.
~Moonlight Rendezvous

As Midsummer progresses, so does Keli’s and Wes’s attraction, and so does the danger to Keli as she uncovers more information that ‘person or persons unknown’ would like to stay private. Which is the most breathtaking….the action, or Wes? You be the judge.

Midsummer Night’s Mischief was a very entertaining read that kept me guessing until the end.

Cozy Wednesday with E.J. Copperman – Author of Ghost in the Wind – #Giveaway too!!

cozy wednesday 2013 640
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so happy to welcome E.J. Copperman back
to Escape With Dollycas!!

ghost in the windHi Everyone,

For reasons I’m not really clear about, I’ve been getting a rather disturbing question from readers lately, and I’m not sure how I should take it.

They keep asking if GHOST IN THE WIND, the seventh and latest in the Haunted Guesthouse series, is the last.

So here’s your answer, readers: No.

There will be an eighth Guesthouse book, whose draft I just submitted to the editor at Berkley Prime Crime, and hopefully there will be more after that (I can’t say one way or the other yet, except to note that it’s not up to me).

An author is left wondering, however, when readers ask the question, whether they know something the author doesn’t. Have you been talking to my publisher?

A series is a funny thing. Hopefully, my series are funnier than most because they’re intended to be. If a purported series book leaves you weeping from laughter, something has gone horribly wrong.

But a series is not like a standalone book. It’s intended to tell a longer story and to develop characters the reader gets to know pretty well. If Alison Kerby, the reluctant ghost talker (“whisperer” would be too quiet) were the same exact character in GHOST IN THE WIND that she was in the first Guesthouse book NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEED in 2010, I would have done my job poorly and maybe this book should have been the last installment.

She’s not, or at least I think she’s not. Each reader gets to decide individually.

Alison has gained some small confidence in her investigative skills. In the first book, she was not a private investigator at all and had to be dragged into the business—or more accurately, blackmailed into the business—at the beginning of the second Guesthouse book AN UNINVITED GHOST because she needed the ghosts in her house to help her build a business by being spooky on schedule for curious guests. It’s a long story. In fact, it’s a couple of long stories, and they’re available in paperback.

Now, Alison has done some investigations and even though she didn’t want to get into that business, she has found some level of success. That doesn’t mean she wants to give up being an innkeeper at all. It means that when Vance McTiernan, one of her favorite 60s musicians, shows up as a ghost in Alison’s house and asks for her help in proving his daughter was murdered, Alison will take the case even against the advice of her resident ghost detective Paul Harrison. She’s star struck but she also believes she can do the job on her own if she has to.

Character development is very important to me when writing a series. I’d get bored and frustrated with a character who never changes. I believe readers feel the same way, and by book #4 would tune the series out, so that it would be unlikely there would be a book #5.

People do evolve and progress as they live. Characters should do the same.

And so, no. GHOST IN THE WIND is not the last in the Haunted Guesthouse series, I’m happy to say. Alison has a lot more growing to do.

~E.J.

What a great post. I love the way characters evolve in cozy series. It is what keeps me coming back for more!!

Murder and mystery on the Jersey Shore from the national bestselling author of Inspector Specter

Never meet your heroes—especially when they’re dead…

Guesthouse owner, single mother, and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby is about to sit down to movie night with her family and friends when she’s struck speechless. Floating before her is the ghost of her musical idol, 1960s English rock star Vance McTiernan. He’s in desperate need of help from Alison and her resident ghostly gumshoe, Paul Harrison.

Reports claim that four months ago, Vance’s daughter died from a drug overdose. Vance, however, thinks she was murdered. While Alison agrees to help, Paul is suspicious of Vance’s motives. But after the body of the alleged killer is found in the movie room, Alison and Paul must act quickly before someone else finds a stairway to heaven…

I am really happy to be part of this tour. This story sounds fantastic but with my son’s passing in March I was afraid to dive into it at this time. I do plan to read it in the future when my heart heals a bit more.

Synopsis
Pedro’s on a mission. But not your everyday, run-of-the-mill type mission. Because Pedro is dead.

That’s right. Dead.

Spirit guide Pedro normally busies himself with conveying messages from departed loved ones through a psychic named Gwen. But when he encounters a recently deceased teenager, the boy’s anguish just about breaks Pedro’s heart. So the spirit guide decides to try and help this boy. Yet meddling in the affairs of the living is a troublesome business, as Pedro soon discovers.

Nevertheless, he convinces Gwen to take an ocean voyage, and that’s when the trouble begins. Within days of leaving port, two passengers on the cruise ship fall into a mysterious coma. Gwen seeks Pedro’s help to restore these passengers, but natural as well as unnatural obstacles keep getting in the way. And by the time the ship docks in Honolulu, the still-living are flat out scrambling for their lives!

A playful blend of science fiction and the paranormal, The Color of Clouds offers a glimpse into the unseen world while taking the reader on an extraordinary ride. The adventure includes danger, mystery, humor, sweet romance and even a dash of thriller.

But the clouds are not what you think.

About The Author –

J.C. Whyte discovered her love for writing while still in elementary school, creating children’s stories. But as an adult, J.C. had to face the harsh reality that such writing seldom pays the bills. So she earned degrees in both Journalism and Communications, and then turned to Public Relations, where for ten years she focused her creative energies into feature writing.

After marriage, kids, several more degrees and occupations (including stints as a travel agent and paralegal), J. C. entered law school. While there, she became a columnist for the school newsletter and later, one of her humorous articles was even published in The National Jurist.

Graduating and passing the Bar, J.C. realized within a few short years that creative writing was still what made her heart sing. So now, as a grandma, she has returned to where her life’s calling began, beginning in 2013 with publication of her children’s book Karmack and now in 2015 with her first novel for adults, The Color of Clouds.

The New York Times bestselling author of If Catfish Had Nine Lives returns to Broken Rope, Missouri, where ghosts of the Old West seek assistance from country cooks and amateur sleuths Betts Winston and her grandmother.

With summer tourists flocking to Broken Rope, locals volunteer to keep chaos to a minimum. Old West skits are running smoothly, actors are behaving, and stagecoach rides are more popular than ever, but when a spectral visitor appears by ghost train, it’s a job only Betts and Gram can handle.

Gram soon starts having nightmares about their ghostly visitor’s demise. And if a ghost and the hot summer weather weren’t making things sticky enough, one of the town’s volunteers—a man notorious for having more than his fair share of ex-wives—is murdered. When Jerome, Bett’s otherworldly friend, makes an unsettling appearance, this simmering double mystery becomes a recipe for disaster.

Includes delicious recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Broken Rope and we are not the only ones. A train station from the past pops up in an empty field and one of the passengers needs a little help. The kind of help only Betts and her grandmother, Miz can provide with a little assistance from Jake and our favorite ghost Jerome.

My land, Paige Shelton has an amazing imagination! An imagination she can lasso up and herd together to create a truly entertaining mystery story or in this case the 5th fantastic mystery in the series.

Betts Winston and her grandmother own and operate a Country Cooking School located next to a cemetery. Over the years they have realized they have a special gift of being able to communicate with ghosts. Ghosts like Jerome. He is my absolute favorite ghostly literary character. He also has a very special place in Betts’ heart. Something her current beau, Cliff, is just going to learn to deal with.

Something is keeping Jerome from visiting Broken Rope right now but he knows Betts needs his help so he comes up with a very creative and sometimes very misunderstood way of making his presence known. Readers will find this quite amusing, the characters not so much.

Shelton has a special way of blending mysteries from the past with mysteries in the present and they intertwine and flow seamlessly side by side. It is hard to call one a subplot because both so powerful and engaging.

We can’t forget the Country Cooking School. This time they are featuring onions including the onion casserole standby of many homes around the country. That recipe isn’t in the book because it can be found everywhere but Betts and her brother Teddy had my mouth watering for Onion Rings and thankfully that recipe was in the book along with others I can’t wait to try.

If you like your mysteries on the cozy side with a bit of a ghost story too these are the perfect books for you. They can be read as stand alone because the author always plenty of backstory for new readers but I sure recommend you read them all and in order because they are all just so darn so good.
