Synopsis
A Poo Poo Kind of Morning
I tried not to look down the mouth of hell staring back at me from inside the glaringly pristine outer ceramic shell of the white throne, my throat catching, stomach doing half flips and a rather impressive rollover routine that would have gotten at least a 9.5 even from the Russian judges. Instead, I forced myself to smile and swallow and remind myself the elbow length yellow rubber gloves grasping the handle of the standard issue plunger were all that stood between me and Pooageddon.
Suck it up, Fee. Big girl panties and adulting and all that.
“At what point,” I waved the dripping plunger, wincing as droplets of yuck flew, “did I think owning a bed and breakfast was going to be glamorous and romantic?”
Fiona Fleming hasn’t lived in Reading, Vermont in over a decade, her escape from small town living leading her to New York City and a life of adventure. An adventure that has left her with no career, an ex who cheated on her and zero plans for the future. Her grandmother’s death grants her a new chance–inheriting Petunia’s, Iris Fleming’s bed and breakfast, seems like the ideal fresh start. But when Fee finds out ownership of the property Iris willed her might be in question, she’s drawn into the seedy underbelly of the cutest town in America after being singled out as the main suspect in a murder.
I grew up in a small place, where everyone knows everyone and no one can keep a secret for long. There’s a supportive and stabilizing influence to being raised that way. An “it takes a village” kind of feeling to a place like that. But I wasn’t looking for the sort of lovable and “got your back, dear” level of community one might seek out if you were actually moving to a new location.
I was about to commit murder. So I needed to dig deeper. That meant uncovering the deliciously dangerous and deplorable appeal to such a way of life. The backstabbing, whispers in the darkness, who’s sleeping with who kind of intrigue that titillates and makes us eager voyeurs.
Which is why I was drawn to choosing a small town setting when I started outlining the Fiona Fleming Cozy Mysteries.
Sure, a big city has more people, more chances for odd encounters or strange ways of doing things. Larger than life crimes, anonymity, multi-cultural diversity and ingrained segregation between the haves and have nots. But I wanted to explore what it would be like to drop multiple deaths by dastardly means into the heart of a place where there were neighbors were more than happy to rat on neighbors while smiling cheerfully over the fence and asking each other to tea.
I love small towns and their curiously eclectic mix of people, shops, art and creativity. Oh, and intrigue. And while Fee’s setting of Reading, Vermont isn’t based in reality, I had a great deal of fun imagining the seedy underside the writer in me always believed runs like a river of mayhem under the smiling and sparkly exterior of my own home town.
Who knew such a small population could produce so many murderers?

Chocolate Hearts and Murder (Fiona Fleming Cozy Mysteries)
A Multiple Drink Kind of Night
Why was it fancy Valentine’s Day drinks were always tinted red? Reminded me more of gore and mayhem than anything to do with romance. Which said a lot, I suppose, for my state of mind when it came to relationships and dating. No bitterness in Fiona Fleming toward the opposite sex or anything.
I sipped carefully at the mimosa the bartender smilingly handed me and shrugged off the sweetness. It had alcohol in it, so I guess it would do. A few of these and I might even find a way to enjoy myself tonight. Yeah, right.
Fiona Fleming would rather be home, at her bed and breakfast with her pug Petunia snuggled up to her while everyone else celebrates Valentine’s Day without her, thank you very much. Instead, she’s been recruited to attend another of Mayor Olivia Walker’s Reading, Vermont tourism promotion events. But when the young majority stakeholder in the White Valley Ski Lodge ends up dead, she’s ready and willing to help Sheriff Crew Turner and her father uncover who killed their victim while a snowstorm cuts them off from the rest of the world.
