Dog of Deliverance: A Golden Retriever Mystery
by Neil S. Plakcy
It is my pleasure to welcome Neil S. Plakcy back to Escape With Dollycas today!
Hi Neil,
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a big fan of the pivot. I began my work life as a university administrator, then used that employment to get my MBA for free. I realized that I had a knack for finding quick answers to operational problems, so I went into construction scheduling and management.
A downturn in the market caused me to turn my skills to producing computer games (Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune among them). But when that company, and the next two, went under, I pivoted back to education, this time with a teaching job that promised tenure! I stayed there for 20 years until retiring and my latest pivot, to full-time writing.
What are three things most people don’t know about you?
I started my career post MBA in shopping mall construction. I loved wearing a hard hat and kept my personalized hats for years after I left the field.
As a teen, I loved The Waltons and complained to my parents that they weren’t as nice as John and Olivia were. When their house caught fire, I was so upset I ran to tell my parents and my mother’s response was, “It couldn’t happen to nicer people.”
What books/authors have most inspired you?
My earliest books were mysteries—either kid lit or eventually Agatha Christie and her circle. Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, when I was in college. Then Jack Kerouac, when I was trying to find my way. Finally, Jimmy Buffett, who inspired the Florida lifestyle I have today.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I like to tell people I spend hours every day researching my books—feeding my dogs, walking my dogs, playing with them, and grooming them. They inspire things that Rochester does, whether it’s sniffing downed branches or barking at me to get their food ready. Beyond that, I research the crimes in the books to make sure that they make sense and that Rochester can find the clues to solve them. I usually only spend a day or two on preliminary research before starting to write, and then continue to research as questions come up.
Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block?
If I do get stuck, I take the dogs for a walk (they get at least four a day.) Stepping away from the computer usually helps me figure out what’s wrong. I also use Claude.ai (an artificial intelligence) for ideas when I get stuck.
What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
The most important things you can do are read contemporary works in your preferred genre (What’s winning awards? What’s on the best-seller lists?) and write. As much and as frequently as possible. The more you are able to read your own work critically, the better you’ll get.
When you are not writing, what do you like to do?
Have I mentioned my dogs? In the evenings you can find me on the couch, one hand moving the pages of my Kindle and the other stroking a dog. A nice dinner out with my husband is also high on my list.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Since the attacks of October 7, I’ve become more connected to my Jewish identity (as evidence in the content of Dog of Deliverance), and I’d love to go to Israel. I want to connect to those places my people have lived for generations.
What is next on the horizon for you?
I have two more golden retriever mysteries in the works, as well as two more books in the Smiling Dog Café series of Japanese-style healing fiction.
Neil, thank you so much for visiting today!
Keep reading to learn more about Neil and his new book, Dog of Deliverance.

When his golden retriever Rochester discovers a body behind the bounce house at Stewart’s Crossing’s first Purim carnival, Steve Levitan finds himself juggling two dangerous investigations that will test both his computer skills and his courage.
Eastern College President Babson asks Steve to use his hacking expertise to investigate Austin Graynor, a star academic whose impressive credentials might be hiding a darker past. What Steve discovers about the professor’s history with female colleagues creates an urgent dilemma about academic power and deadly consequences.
He’s distracted, though, by the murder of Yakov Shmerler, a diamond dealer who was supposed to marry eighteen-year-old Hadassah Schildkraut. Hadassah fled her restrictive Orthodox community to stay with friends of Steve’s. As he helps his detective friend Rick Stemper investigate Yakov’s murder, they uncover secrets that reach from Pennsylvania to the isolated community of Kiryas Lev in New York’s Catskill Mountains.
Hadassah’s escape has made her a target. Her blog exposing corruption in her hometown threatens powerful men who’ve built their authority on others’ silence. As both investigations converge on themes of hidden identities and the courage to challenge corrupt authority—echoing Purim’s ancient story of Queen Esther—Steve must protect those speaking truth to power while helping bring dangerous men to justice.
