There’s nothing magical about midlife for Abby McBride, unless dealing with pesky ghosts counts.
Between hot flashes and brain fog and the dead paying a call at all hours, she’s had her share of spirited mayhem, while trying to hold up a perfect image among her cul-de-sac crowd. Not easy! But, after decades of suppressing her psychic gift, it all comes crashing down at the annual Halloween bash and her quiet suburban life goes up in spectral smoke.
The ghosts of 125 Magnolia Lane have demands and are not opposed to dragging the living into their hellish afterlife if that’s what it takes. Can Abby finally embrace the powers she’s long denied in order to save her family and friends from eternal destruction? But at what cost to her reputation, her sanity, marriage and possibly even her freedom?
When Ghost Whisperer meets Bad Moms, haunted hijinks are inevitable among dysfunctional friendships and an intrepid heroine who’s so done playing nice. That’s right! DONE! Get set for a thrill ride that will leave readers with a tale of laugh out loud, heart-tugging midlife magic and mayhem.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Abby McBride has tried to hide her psychic abilities for years, but a neighborhood Halloween party turns her entire life inside out. The house at 125 Magnolia Lane has always given her the “willies”. The fact that her friends, Krissy and Cal, live there and host the annual event means the angels had better shore up her protective bubble. This year, the ghosts are not in the mood to play nice, no matter how reinforced the bubble is. Soon, Krissy and Abby are at the ghosts’ mercy, and she is forced to use her powers to save them both. But those ghosts aren’t going away. They have demands that must be met, and Abby may be the only one who can make that happen.
It doesn’t take long before Tri-State Investigations (ghost hunters) are on the scene, with Abby’s spirit guides standing by to help find the ghosts and move them along. But at what cost to Abby and her family? Her kids are being bullied and are kicked off their sports team, and her husband Tanner and Cal have been removed from the coaching staff. Her friends are turning on her, as is the community. What hurts the most is that Tanner feels betrayed that she kept the secret from him, too.
Abby knows her task is monumental; she hopes she survives so that she can rebuild trust with her family and friends and settle into her anything but normal life.
Abby MacBride is an interesting protagonist; she has tried to ignore the voices in her head and the ghosts that only she can see. She learned long ago her powers were not a good thing, and all she wanted was to be like everyone else and have a “normal life”. Well, the cat is out of the bag, and now she has to deal with it. Her husband Tanner is hurt, but wants to protect her. Her twin sons don’t really understand why their lives have been upended. Krissy and Cal are scared about what is happening in their house, and they are upset because their boys were cast out just like Abby’s. It is easy to care about these characters and get invested in their lives.
I have to say, a story like this could have turned dark very quickly, but the author laced the story with humor to keep it lighthearted. Abby’s inner dialogues and comments from other characters, living and dead, were quite amusing. Things did get serious when it was time to take on “the Others”. Everyone needed to work together. I was captivated by the other world the author created. The drama taking place was exciting, tense, and scary. Lives were truly on the line in usual and unusual ways.
Ms. Freeman allowed Abby to grow, and by the end, we saw how brave this woman is. The author captures the people of the tight-knit “perfect” neighborhood so well. I appreciated how Abby leaves their gossip and accusations behind to help, especially those who couldn’t help themselves. I enjoyed the themes of friendship, acceptance, and sacrifice, and the way the author layered them in the story. The book did fall out of the cozy realm for me, though, due to the explicit language. Abby does love those F-bombs.
In Psychic in Suburbia, readers are taken along on an adventurous journey with a middle-aged protagonist who pushes herself to do what is right. A lighthearted mystery with stunning moments of suspense made this book an entertaining and enjoyable read.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.

About KC Freeman

After leaving the corporate world to raise her five rambunctious children with her husband in North Carolina, KC Freeman eventually found her way back to her lifelong desire to write paranormal fiction.
First, she dipped her toes in the writing world by ghostwriting cozy mysteries and romance novels. Once confident of her creative writing skills, she struck out on her own to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance with her debut novel, Rekindled Prophecy: Greylyn the Guardian Angel Book 1. A few books later, KC added the label, “USA Today Best-Selling Author” with her paranormal romance, Renegade Angel, incorporated into the Realm of Darkness box set.
KC writes mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She also spends a lot of time editing manuscripts with her company, Book Mage Editing, and is certified by the Professional Book Editors Association.
Now that her five children are grown and flown, KC spends her time writing, editing, reading, hiking, exercising (in an attempt to get back a semblance of her pre-menopause body), and spoiling her fur baby chihuahua, Harley.
