Andrea Brafford’s life is nearly perfect. A passionate marine biologist, happily married to Craig, the man she loves, recently moved into a home commensurate with their success to enjoy a life many others only dream about, in one of Houston’s most desirable suburbs. But only a few months later, a trial that dramatically polarizes their town names Craig Brafford as a defendant in the murder of his young wife, shattering the serenity of the peaceful community.

Andi’s name is on everyone’s lips, her relationships exposed and torn to shreds in a highly publicized case that has everyone’s eyes glued to the internet. Andrea’s life remains a mystery that investigators and public opinion equally fail to solve. Was she the happy, devoted wife she’d made everyone believe she was?

Only she can answer that question.

The best-selling author of Dawn Girl is back with a suspenseful, gripping psychological thriller. Fans of Celeste Ng, Alex Michaelides, and Liane Moriarty will enjoy The Girl You Killed, an addictive psychological thriller that will keep readers enthralled until the last page.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Andrea Bradford is blissfully happy in her marriage. Her husband adores her, they have a beautiful home in a fantastic neighborhood and she just found out she is pregnant. The only thing she desires is a job, hopefully at her alma mater using her skills as a marine biologist.

Tragically, Andi’s life is cut short when she is murdered. Her husband Craig is the police’s prime suspect. The community quickly becomes invested in Andi’s life and death. Will the truth be revealed?

I have to start this review by saying I have to be careful because I don’t want to give anything away because WOW! This was a heck of a story.

The characters are solidly developed over the course of this story. It is impossible not to like Andi and become invested in her life. Craig on the other hand is the exact opposite. He starts out just fine but quickly turns into quite a scoundrel.

The author takes her time and knows how to build the tension slowly pulling the reader deeper and deeper into the intricate web of this psychological thriller.  She manipulated the story and the characters in such an excellent way. Her detailed writing style lends well to a story like this. Craig was clearly driven. Andi seemed to be under his spell until it was too late. I liked that some chapters ended with some court testimony teasing us of what was to come. For me, that really ramped up the speed of my reading and one more chapter – itis. The book kept me up reading into the early morning hours because I just couldn’t put it down.

Ms. Wolfe has written a gripping, compelling, powerful story with surprising twists and turns. She took me on a wild wide and I enjoyed each and every page.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last. She appears to be a prolific writer so I have plenty of books to choose from.

An exciting thriller with solid character development I have to give The Girl You Killed my highest rating. Paradise.

When a student disappears and is presumed dead, her professor passes off her manuscript as his own—only to find out it implicates him in an unsolved murder in this new thriller from the USA Today bestselling author of The Request.

After years of struggling to write following the deaths of his wife and son, English professor Connor Nye publishes his first novel, a thriller about the murder of a young woman.

There’s just one problem: Connor didn’t write the book. His missing student did. And then she appears on his doorstep, alive and well, threatening to expose him.

Connor’s problems escalate when the police insist details in the novel implicate him in an unsolved murder from two years ago. Soon Connor discovers the crime is part of a disturbing scandal on campus and faces an impossible dilemma—admit he didn’t write the book and lose his job or keep up the lie and risk everything. When another murder occurs, Connor must clear his name by unraveling the horrifying secrets buried in his student’s manuscript.

This is a suspenseful, provocative novel about the sexual harassment that still runs rampant in academia—and the lengths those in power will go to cover it up.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this David Bell thriller English professor Connor Nye is still grieving the loss of his wife and child while the college is pushing the “publish or perish” mantra. A couple of years ago one of his students disappeared right after turning in her novel thesis. The man clearly was not thinking rationally when he submitted the student’s book for publication as his own. Then he gets a major surprise after the book is released – the student has returned and she gives him an ultimatum. If he doesn’t give her what she wants she vows to expose him and blow up his life. Then things get worse when the police arrive at his door questioning him about an unsolved murder that happened exactly like the murder in his book. So he has a huge decision, out himself, admitting he didn’t write the book and face unemployment or stick to the lie and try to convince the police of his innocence. As he ponders his decision another person is murdered and he starts to dig into the deaths himself and uncovers some surprising connections that all seem to lead back to the college.

Each year I anxiously await David Bell’s next book and as always he has created a very complicated mystery.

Again he introduces readers to some very interesting characters. I really wanted to like Connor Nye and pull for him. I understand the sudden loss of a loved one and losing two people you love has to be twice as hard, but he made a horrible decision. A decision that truly had me questioning his intelligence. It was bad enough to submit that novel as his own but was crazy stupid to submit that novel without changing a single word. Change some names. Change some locations. Make even just a little bit of effort just to give yourself a chance. Even if had not been ripped from an actual murder, even a much less educated person would have changed something.

I did feel for Madeleine almost immediately because I knew there was more to her story. She was so close to graduating when she disappeared. I really needed to know her involvement in the traumatic events that happened in her book especially when we learned it pertained to an actual murder.  Was she responsible or did she just see something she shouldn’t? Was it a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or was she actively investigating the murder?

Telling the story from each of the character’s points of view and going back and forth in time really gave the story depth and the pages rapidly turning. Another student enters the narrative later as events start to get even more disturbing. Because of the way the author presented the book, there are some repetitive passages but it didn’t really detract too much from the flow.

This mystery really takes a real warped journey before it wraps up. As Connor continues to struggle he continues to make bad decisions. Bell has always used supporting characters to move the story along and he does that here in a compelling way. He also shines a light on the pains and pressure of academia and the ways it pushes both professors and students and the ugly underbelly that can arise when stress takes over.

Kill All Your Darlings was a thriller that kept me entertained and had me physically moving to the edge of my seat a couple of times. David Bell continues to be one of my favorite authors in this genre. I am excited to see what he will bring his readers next summer.

The Request
Psychological Thriller
Setting – Kentucky
Publisher: Berkley (June 30, 2020)
Hardcover: 416 pages
ISBN-10: 0440000890

When a man agrees to do a favor for a friend, he gets more than he bargained for as he becomes embroiled in a woman’s murder in this new thriller from the USA Today bestselling author of Layover.

Ryan Francis has it all—great job, wonderful wife, beautiful child—and he loves posting photos of his perfect life on social media. Until the night his friend Blake asks him to break into a woman’s home to retrieve incriminating items that implicate Blake in an affair. Ryan refuses to help, but when Blake threatens to reveal Ryan’s darkest secret—which could jeopardize everything in Ryan’s life—Ryan has no choice but to honor Blake’s request.

When he arrives at the woman’s home, Ryan is shocked to find her dead—and just as shocked to realize he knows her. Then his phone chimes, revealing a Facebook friend request from the woman. With police sirens rapidly approaching, Ryan flees, wondering why his friend was setting him up for murder.

Determined to keep his life intact and to clear his name, Ryan must find the real murderer—but solving the crime may lead him closer to home than he ever could have imagined.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

You just need to look at Ryan Francis’ social media posts to know he is happy. A new baby, a loving wife, and a great job. Then his friend Blake makes a request. A request that could cost him everything so at first, he refuses. Then Blake threatens to make public a deep, dark, secret he and Ryan vowed to keep forever. Blake keeps pushing until Ryan finally accepts his request.

Blake wants Ryan to break into a woman’s house to remove some things that would prove Blake was having an affair. Instead, he finds the lady of the house dead on the floor and realizes that he knows her. When he instantly receives a Facebook friend request from the woman he freaks out. Did Blake set him up? He hears the sirens and knows he has to get out of the house, find Blake, and find out what the hell is going on.

Secrets, blackmail, murder, The Request has them all and more.

Bell continues to create interesting characters, those we root for, instigators we grow to hate, and a few that keep us on the fence until all the twists and secrets are revealed.

David Bell has penned a compelling mystery where he turns the lives of people who could be your next-door neighbors inside out. The past comes back to bite in unexpected ways. The pace is fluid as it picks up with almost every turn of the page.

I anxiously await each new title from David Bell and this one was sure worth the wait. I was unsure where he was going to take these characters when I started reading. I thought “the request” was a little strange but Mr. Bell quickly drew me in with the first twist and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.  The ending was amazing! I never saw it coming.  I was totally entertained the entire way.

Great Escapes Praise for Don’t Make a Sound (Sawyer Brooks)
by T.R. Ragan

Overall, it feels kind of wrong to say I enjoyed this one when it had such difficult subject matter but I really did. It wasn’t always easy for me to read but it was a very compelling book. I’m eager to read more about Sawyer and to see what other kinds of trouble she will find herself in next.
~Booked On A Feeling

This is a novel I had a hard time stopping each time I picked it up because I wanted to see justice served for the girls in the story. It’s a good start to a new series, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Sawyer.
~The Book’s the Thing

This book is not for the faint of heart. Tread lightly because this is deeply disturbing and made all the more chilling given how incredibly believable it all is. This violence happens every day, and though explicit, but never gratuitous, it is relevant.
~That’s What She’s Reading

Despite the difficult storylines I really got engrossed with the story and though at times difficult to read, you really connect with Sawyer on a deeper level.

What if the nightmares are actually memories?

It’s been a year since Poppy’s husband, Jack, was brutally murdered during his morning run through Manhattan’s Riverside Park. In the immediate aftermath, Poppy spiraled into an oblivion of grief, disappearing for several days only to turn up ragged and confused wearing a tight red dress she didn’t recognize. What happened to Poppy during those lost days? And more importantly, what happened to Jack?

The case was never solved, and Poppy has finally begun to move on. But those lost days have never stopped haunting her. Poppy starts having nightmares and blackouts—there are periods of time she can’t remember, and she’s unable to tell the difference between what is real and what she’s imagining. When she begins to sense that someone is following her, Poppy is plunged into a game of cat and mouse, determined to unravel the mystery around her husband’s death. But can she handle the truth about what really happened?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Living in opulence or squalor, under the skin people are just the same. Everyone suffers. Everyone struggles. It just looks different from the outside.

Grief can be all-consuming and no one knows that better than Poppy Lang. Her husband, Jack was murdered in Manhattan’s Riverside Park a year ago. His death sent Poppy over the edge, she can’t account for several days after she received the shocking news. When she comes back to the land of the living she is wearing clothes she has never seen with very little memory of what happened. She is also devastated that Jack’s killer was never caught, the case is still open but stagnant.

Then she starts to have nightmares and blackouts. She feels like she is being followed and she is missing vast periods of time.  She needs to remember what happened to her because she thinks it will lead straight to Jack’s killer.  The question is – Can she survive her quest and handle what she finds?

The synopsis and prologue captured my interest. I wanted to know what happened to both Jack and Poppy, but there were a lot of confusing moments. I think that is just what the author intended. Poppy’s path certainly wasn’t a straight one so much so it was sometimes hard to know what was really real and what was not. There is also quite a bit of repetition that was oft putting at first until I noticed a minuscule change in the event.  Poppy’s fears are palpable and continued to pull me further into the story.

I really didn’t care for her therapist who seemed to be missing the big picture. Her goal seemed to be getting Poppy “a good night’s sleep” while not realizing her client was mixing pills with alcohol, mixing sleeping pills of different dosages with alcohol, mixing sleeping pills with other pills and alcohol, making her hallucinate, have nightmares and blackouts.

Poppy’s best friend Layla was a mother hen over her. She was so traumatized when her friend went missing she wants to be sure it doesn’t happen again. She comes across a very controlling person. The lead detective on her husband’s case is also very involved following up each little clue that is uncovered.

Ms. Unger takes us an emotional roller coaster with almost everyone Poppy interacts with a suspect. Through her words, we see what Poppy sees, and most of it is downright frightening. I am glad I don’t live in New York, I would probably never leave the house again. I was so engrossed in my reading that when a child entered the room and surprised me I actually jumped and my Kindle went flying into the air. This book has exciting twists and some terrifying turns. I did have a very hard time putting it down and stayed up late in the night to finish. Then I was too keyed up to sleep.

The story is so well written and immersed in this psychological mystery there is some food for thought regarding death and losing a loved one. I may have only caught this because I continue to grieve for a loved one myself.

This is the first book I have read by Lisa Unger but it won’t be my last.
