Caroline Popov, alone, heartbroken, and deeply in debt ends up in glamorous Palm Springs, California where Native casinos have just opened, offering employment to thousands. She lands a job at the Palm Oasis Casino where she is mentored by the charismatic tribal chairman, John Tovar.

Embraced by casino culture, Caroline works her way up to casino manager of the Night Hawk, in the High Desert of Southern California. There, she is responsible for managing multicultural team members, satisfying the demands of often unique guests, and growing revenue while rooting out corruption.

In the process of rediscovering her inner strength, she learns, you have to gamble like your life depends on it. Because it often does.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

After traveling to Russia with her husband Andrei, Caroline’s life implodes when he tells her their real estate business in Palm Springs is underwater in debt. He begs her to stay with him in Russia but she returns to California to face the creditors and deal with the fallout. To handle to immense tax debt her friend, John Tovar hires her to work at his tribe’s casinos. She soon finds herself promoted to casino manager at the Night Hawk Casino with the direction to update the place and grow it to be all it can be. But she also has to watch over the staff. Being around the amounts of money her employees see can quickly lead to corruption.

I started reading Casino Queen and could not put the book down. I stayed up late because the story had a slow build that grabbed a hold of me and wouldn’t let go. Soon the story became so surprising and suspenseful the pages were flying so fast there should have been steam coming out of my Kindle.

Caroline Popov is a character with depth. She uses her keen observations skills to keep the guests of the casino happy and her employees honest. Sadly she does make a few enemies when she needs to ban some guests and fire a few employees. She has a huge heart so those actions weren’t easy but she can’t turn her back on out of control behavior or illegal acts. She also loves her husband dearly but couldn’t abide his actions. She fights hard to always do the right thing and at times that takes a lot of courage. The more I read the more I loved this character and became invested in everything about her and what she faced.

The author draws on her vast knowledge of casinos to give her readers a real beyond-the-scenes look at a place full of bells and whistles. From the slot machines, blackjack tables, money counters, and dealers, to the restaurants and security offices and personnel she goes into depth on it all. We also get to travel the desert to Caroline’s cozy home. The desert setting was great for this story. The desolate area was eerie at the right times and beautiful in others. I really enjoyed Ms. Bertoia’s descriptions. I felt like I was following right in Caroline’s footsteps.

Casino Queen was not what I expected from reading the synopsis, it was so much more. The casino culture was both interesting and intriguing. Add to that some mystery, suspense, and romance and you have an absolutely Perfect Escape. In the end, everything in this story appears to be wrapped up nicely. I am really excited to see where the author takes Caroline next.

About Cara Bertoia

Growing up in a strait-laced Southern family, I was always fascinated with casinos. In my twenties on a summer hiatus from teaching in North Carolina, I drove to California and became a dealer at Caesars in Lake Tahoe. Well, I can tell you that after teaching high school, handling an unruly gambler was a piece of cake. My mother highly disapproved of my working in a casino, “a place so bad it has ‘sin’ in the middle.”

Eventually, I succumbed to pressure from the family and returned east to take a high-tech job in Boston. I also began working on my MFA in writing at Emerson. I wanted to write the first realistic novel about casino life from the perspective of an experienced table games dealer. I am always amazed that normal and sometimes quite intelligent players become absolutely clueless in the casino. They repeat superstitious nonsense and no amount of logic can change their position, maybe my novel will.

While in Boston I was offered the opportunity to join Princess Cruises as a croupier. Jumping at the chance, I spent the next five years circling the globe. Sometimes life exceeds your dreams. I was awed by the wonders of Venice, the fjords of Norway, and the Northern Lights in Leningrad.

I returned from ships with a very special souvenir, my Scottish husband Ray. We went to work at the Spa Casino in Palm Springs. We now live in Hollywood, Florida, where I write about my casino years while wistfully gazing out at the ocean.

I love to see any of you out there reading Casino Queen. Send me a picture to and I will post it on social media.

Thank you, Cara B

Pursuit of the Truth (West Investigations) by K.D. Richards #AuthorInterview / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @kiadwrites

Pursuit of the Truth (West Investigations)
by K.D. Richards

I am so happy K.D. took time out of her busy day to
answer my questions!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised just outside of Washington, D.C. Although I’ve always written and enjoyed writing, I took a different path career-wise right out of school and earned a law degree. A job opportunity for my husband gave us the opportunity to move to the Toronto area where he is from so after working as an attorney and legal instructor for fifteen years we made the move to Canada and now spend summers and school breaks in the U.S. Of course, not recently due to the pandemic but I’m looking forward to getting back to the DC area this year.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

  1. I took up playing violin at age 38. I’m horrible but I do love it and recently my son said “I actually recognize that song” so I must be getting better!
  2. I met one of my best friends in kindergarten and nearly forty years later we still text or talk almost every day.
  3. I prefer sour foods over sweets.

What is the first book you remember reading?

Green Eggs and Ham. I LOVED that book as a child and still have it memorized.

What are you reading now?

I’m just getting started reading They Never Learn by Layne Fargo. I’m only 10% in but it’s really good.

What books have most inspired you?

I’ve always liked mysteries. My mother bought a bunch of those 5-minute mystery books and I always devoured them.  One of my absolute favorite books to this day is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskins. I think it’s the first book I read with a real twist that made me immediately go back and start reading again to catch all the things I’d missed the first time.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I think it would be The Westing Game and possibly the movie Clue. I watched that movie dozens of times as a teen. I’m naturally curious, some might even go so far as to say nosy! I want to know why things happened and what motivates people. And being a lawyer I do like to see the bad guy be brought to justice.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

I do have an office but I’ve also learned to write wherever and whenever. Especially when I worked outside the home, I’d write on the train during my commute. Dictate scenes to Siri while waiting to pick up my sons. If I waited for the perfect time and place, I’d have never completed a manuscript.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

That is an awesome question and I wish I knew. For Pursuit of the Truth, I just knew I wanted to write a story about a woman that owned a hotel, had been through a series of recent hardships, and had a crush on the head of hotel security. I’m a plotter so for the rest of the story I sit down and simply daydream about what could happen until I find something I like.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

Revisions and editing! I’m usually so excited about a story when I’m writing the first draft, that’s where everything is new to me. By the second and third time through I’m thinking “not this again”! Of course the revision and editing stages are where the story really is so I power through. It’s all worth it in the end.

What do you think makes a good story?

Of course interesting, complex, believable, characters and a good juicy plot are necessary. But I do think “good” is subjective. I know we’ve all read books that got amazing reviews but just we just don’t connect with them.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

Well, there are a lot of strong women in my family so I try to write strong women as well. Nadia Shelton, the heroine, in Pursuit of the Truth is a little like me in that as a child I did want to own a hotel and I lived in New York City years ago. But I think all of the ladies in the West Investigations series are great.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

Pursuit of the Truth is a romantic suspense so the story does focus mostly on the romance and mystery but it is also a story about a family. The theme of the entire series is actually family. The four West brothers have taken over the private investigations firm that their father started and that changes their relationship toward each other and creates tensions between them. Nadia is also dealing with family issues in Pursuit of the Truth. I think seeing the characters dealing with relationships other than the core romantic relationship in their lives adds depth and complexity.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Books two and three in the West Investigations series! Look for them in Fall/Winter 2021.

#Review / #Giveaway – Best of Luck (O’briens) by Corinne Scott – Great Escapes Book Tour @CamelPressBooks

Best of Luck (O’briens)
by Corinne Scott

Best of Luck (O’briens)
Romantic Suspense
2nd in Series
Setting – New York
Camel Press (February 14, 2018)
Paperback: 248 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1603813839

Crew Costa isn’t Irish, but for a kid from the school of hard knocks, he’s had the luck of the Irish with his chain of faux-Irish pubs, O’Shaughnessy’s Shenanigans. Number 13 is set to open in time for St. Patrick’s Day. The Bronx is already the site of several authentic Irish pubs, including The Lion O’Brien. Started by Liam O’Brien, the pub is now managed by his youngest daughter Siobhan, but only after her four older brothers refused the job. Now Siobhan has to prove she is worthy.

Siobhan falls for Crew, literally, after they collide while he is moving into her apartment building. Their attraction is immediate and powerful, but they are rivals. Siobhan is counting on the Lion winning the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl, which Crew has entered as well. The lead-up to the event involves “pranking” your competition, and the older pubs band together against the gaudy newcomer, with its McNaughty the Leprechaun and other cultural stereotypes. For Crew and Siobhan, the pranking quickly gets personal and expensive.

Siobhan and Crew can’t resist the electricity between them, but can Siobhan trust this streetwise charmer? Can Crew trust this daddy’s girl whose overriding passion is her pub? And will the rage brewing among the other pub owners put their lives in danger?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am been anxiously awaiting the next book in this series and I must say it was well worth the wait.

After her brother turned down managing the family pub, the Lion O’Brien, Siobhan takes over the reins. Her father isn’t sure this is the right move but with his recent health scare, he doesn’t have much of a choice. Her first decision is to join the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl. A unique event where patrons travel from pub to pub in teams, drinking, eating and answering trivia questions. She sees it as a fun community event that will draw new customers to the Lion. Then she finds out a chain pub is joining in this year. Crew Costa is set to open is 13th O’Shaughnessy’s Shenanigans and plans to use the Crawl as his grand opening. The man doesn’t have one drop of Irish blood in his body so the other pub owners are quite upset to have him joining their party. So they come together to use the traditional pranking that leads up to the crawl to force him and his bar out of the St. Patty’s Day event.

There is only one problem. Siobhan finds herself drawn to Crew. The romantic tension just radiates between them. Can they seriously be headed for a relationship? or is it just a fun fling leading up to the holiday? Will their relationship make them targets of the pub owners, putting themselves in danger?

Adding romance to the suspense is always good in my book.

We met the O’Brien’s in the first book of this series, Beginner’s Luck. I was captivated by this family right away. I do have a little Irish in my blood and Siobhan’s parents remind me a little bit of my own. Eoin and his wife Vivian are back, newlyweds expecting their first child. The other brothers all make appearances too, but this is Siohban’s story. She is handling her new pub duties very well until she meets Crew Costa and the crawl pranks start. Some causing some costly damage and making her father very unhappy. Crew is a handsome man who had a little criminal activity in his past. That and a little luck got him to where he is today, owning a chain of pubs. The electricity between them is evident immediately, but they are rivals, Siobhan is dedicated to her family, he is rarely in one place for more than a few weeks. They are both such strong people, can they have a real meaningful relationship.

Again Ms. Scott sets the perfect pace to get us invested in her characters. We get to know them so well while she draws us in and then things get not only romantic but suspenseful. Someone is carrying these pranks too far, putting lives in danger. But who is it? I was suspecting everyone right up until the culprit was finally revealed.

I am impressed with the author’s talent to mix her steamy romances with a nice suspenseful mystery and keeping a comfortable balance between the two. She gives her readers a very entertaining story.

Meetings 1 and 2 with the Obrien’s have both been perfect escapes. I am ready for visit 3, If we are lucky we won’t have to wait too long.

One of the jewels of Best of Luck for me was the development of the relationship between Siobhan and Crew. This is no run-of-the-mill boy-meets-girl story.

Beginner’s Luck (The O’Briens Book 1)
Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Setting – New York

Camel Press (November 1, 2016)
Paperback: 232 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1603813815

As eldest son, Eoin O’Brien is expected to take over the management of his family pub, the Lion O’Brien in the Bronx. Despite his da’s disapproval, he has achieved his dream of becoming a police detective. He also longs to have a family, but his wife Vivian left him three years ago to pursue her own dreams of working in an art gallery.

Now Vivian is back from California. When the gallery where she works is robbed and vandalized, their paths cross again. It turns out the attack on the gallery was personal. After Vivian is almost run down by a car, it is clear that she herself is the target, though she can’t think of anyone who would wish her harm. Eoin and Vivian circle each other warily, each feeling the pull of the past and their still powerful attraction. But there will be no easy reconciliation. First she find a way back into the O’Brien family’s good graces. Eoin, in turn, sees that he is partly to blame for her flight. Like his father, he is too quick to anger, too domineering. He must learn to give the independent Vivian her space. But above all, he has sworn to protect her. And if he gives her too much space, she may end up dead.

Says Corinne, “My first time in a New York Irish pub, I was struck by the strong feeling of family and tradition. And so the idea of the O’Briens was born. I could picture this big Irish family pouring drinks and sharing stories, all with an adorable brogue. They seemed so real I had to make them come to life.”

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Eoin O’Brien and his wife Vivian married very early in their relationship so that Eoin could get a green card and follow his dream to join the NYPD. Three years ago she left their marriage behind to follow her own dream of working in an art gallery. Now she is back in New York and guess who happens to answer the call when her gallery is robbed? None other than new detective Eoin O’Brien. The attraction is still there but is it enough for a reconciliation? Can than get past all the obstacles in their way?

Sometimes I just need to venture out of my cozy world for something a little steamy. I am not much of a romance reader but when you tangle romance with some mystery and suspense I am all in.

Having a little Irish in my make up and with tomorrow being St. Patrick’s Day, it was the perfect time to read this book.

The O’Brien family immigrated to America when Eoin was just 4 years old and opened their own Irish Pub. Their family grew and while Eoin’s father expected the eldest son to follow tradition and take over the pub when he was ready to retire Eoin has other ideas. His father didn’t take this well and their Irish tempers exploded often about this subject. When Eoin married Vivian and joined the police force their relationship became even more strained. In true fashion, his mother was the peacemaker. His brothers and sister were able to choose their careers, one even wants to run the pub. But there is still a cloud over this father and his eldest son.

Ms. Scott has created vivid characters I cared about right away. She took us deeper into their lives as the story progressed that made them so real. The Irish brogue made them even better. She allowed us to take a seat at the bar and enjoy the pub atmosphere and even the occasional fight. Eoin’s parents really warmed my heart as they both reminded me of my own parents. His father’s stubbornness and mother’s mostly gentle, sometimes forceful, prodding felt genuine and exactly like the home I grew up in. The sibling rivalry was very well written too. Makes me wonder if the author drew from her own life.

The romantic tension between Vivian and Eoin was strong and a few scenes absolutely sizzled. Situations continued to test them and at some points their pain just oozed of the pages.

I was impressed by the mystery. It was very balanced with the romance. Handled aptly by the police it was not easy for them to solve and had me perplexed several times. I thought I knew the “who” but the “why” was not adding up. It turned out I was only partly right when the entire story concluded. The ending had an suspenseful edge of your seat moment that I absolutely loved.

I am excited that this is going to be a series. I love this family. I wonder which O’Brien will be the star of the next story……

Watch out Southern California! There’s a new entertainment attorney in town and she’s got game. Only problem is, it’s not the one she should be playing. Corrie Locke belongs behind a desk, not behind a Glock. She should be taking VIP calls, not nosing around a questionable suicide. Instead, she’s hot on the trail of a murderer.

Luckily, she’s the daughter of a late, great private eye and she’s inherited his love of sleuthing…and illegal weaponry. It doesn’t help matters that her gene for caution is a recessive one. Corrie finds herself in the center of a murder case, unearthing suspects in shocking places. With a cold-blooded killer on the loose, Corrie will have to up her game, or die trying.

About The Author

Like her heroine, Corrie Locke, Lida Sideris worked as an entertainment attorney for a film studio. Unlike her heroine, she did not get blackmailed into investigating the suspicious death of a co-worker. Lida resides in the northern tip of Southern California with her family, their rescue shepherds, and a flock of uppity chickens. She was one of two national recipients of the Helen McCloy/Mystery Writers of America scholarship for mystery writing.

Cordelia Kane has always been a daddy’s girl—her father raised her alone after her mother died in a car crash when Cordelia was just two years old. So when he has a serious heart attack, Cordelia is devastated, and the emotion is only intensified by the confusion she feels when he reveals the shocking truth about her mother.

Cordelia can’t suppress her curiosity about the woman who gave birth to her, and when she discovers the answers to her questions lie in Sydney, Australia, she travels there to get them.

Hotel magnate Aiden Madison is Cordelia’s best friend’s older brother. He’s oblivious to the fact that she’s had a crush on him for years. When he gets railroaded into taking her along to Sydney on his company jet, he’s unwittingly drawn into a volatile family drama.

Aiden wants to help Cordelia get answers about her mother, but threats from her wealthy, high-powered family are quickly becoming dangerous. Sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but after multiple attempts are made on Cordelia’s life, Aiden realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am testing my memory on this story. I believe Aiden and Cordelia’s crush started way back in a previous book. I believe it was Murder List back in 2004 and now 10 years later they come together again.  Aiden was always more of a big brother figure because he was her best friend’s older brother, but she has a huge crush on the guy.  This time they are thrown together due to circumstances beyond their control and her crush is reciprocated in a big way. Now she just has to stay alive and they need to realize they belong together.

The plot of this one was very engaging. After all these years Cordie’s father reveals a secret on his deathbed about her mother.  My heart was breaking for her and she had the courage to uncover the truth even though it put her in mortal danger.

There is also a subplot involving the Madison brothers. Two are very active in the family hotel business and the third brother is more of a playboy who races cars and hooks up with a variety of ladies. An accident has sidelined him and he decides to get involved in a deal his brothers have written off. Spencer and Aiden are not happy about Walker taking on the deal and family drama ensues.  Add this to Cordie’s drama and it makes a helluva story!

Yes, this book is part of the Buchanan / Renard / MacKenna series but what I like it that Julie Garwood writes them so they can each stand alone. Characters have returned from previous books but they are full and fleshed out so that you don’t have to reread or try to remember how everyone got to where they are today. But everyone that I have read has been very entertaining so if you can you should start at the beginning. When writing about family drama, suspense and romance Julie Garwood is one of the best.

I am hoping we don’t have to wait another 10 years to revisit these characters. I would love to Walker have his own adventure soon as he decides whether he wants to concentrate on the family business or on his playboy pleasures.
