The Notorious Noel Caper (Sandy Fairfax Teen Idol Mysteries) by Sally Carpenter #AuthorInterview / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

The Notorious Noel Caper (Sandy Fairfax Teen Idol Mysteries)
by Sally Carpenter

It is my pleasure to welcome Sally Carpenter
back to Escape With Dollycas today!

Hi Sally,

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in a rural town in southwest Indiana. I lived in the Midwest until 2000 when I moved to Southern California. I have a master’s degree in theater, a Master of Divinity, and a black belt in tae kwon do. I’ve worked a variety of jobs but now I’m with a community newspaper.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Depends on the book. On my newest book, The Notorious Noel Caper, my library was closed due to the pandemic, so I had to settle for a little bit of online research. But since this is part of a series, I had already done the research on the main character. My main character, Sandy Fairfax, is a former 1970s-era teen idol. To get in his mindset, I had read many autobiographies of real-life teen idols. I was/am a Monkees fan and I got into the record collecting and concert-going. I had worked at a movie studio so I knew about Sandy’s “workplace” and a bit about how Hollywood operated.

Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block?

More like writer’s procrastination. I work a day job, so in the evenings it’s sometimes hard to get motivated to sit back at the computer and write. But once I get started and get in the groove, I can zip along. Also, it’s a challenge to put the plot together. I start with certain scenes in mind, but then I have to link them together with more scenes, and sometimes it’s a chore to think up those.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

Start with the basics: learn good grammar and spelling, learn how to proofread (publishers will throw away your work if page 1 is full of typos), the rules of plotting and character development, the format of the genre you’re writing in, and know when to take advice and when to leave it. You can find a zillion online classes on “how to write” and sometimes you’ll find contradictory advice. Some authors say put in a lot of description; others say don’t bother. Some say have the body appear in chapter 1 always; others say it can come later. Write what you feel is right, but be willing to revise if a publisher says to change it.

When you are not writing what do you like to do?

Read, of course, although often this is “research” for the next book. I have a cat, which can be a handful. I love to watch old movies and TV shows.

How has the COVID pandemic affected you and your writing?

Actually, it was great. I was already pretty much a homebody. Writing fiction was a great way to get my mind off the world’s problems. In 2020 I finished one novel, revised three older books into clean reads, and started a novel that I finished this year. I also organized my paper files and cleaned out my book collection for library donations. The biggest benefit is working from home for my day job. That’s saving me an hour of commute time every day (which I can spend in writing!), and reducing the stress of driving in heavy traffic. Since my two series are set in 1967 and 1993, I don’t need to mention the pandemic in the storylines.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

The Vatican and the Holy Land. This would help to strengthen my faith.

What is next on the horizon for you?

I’ve started work on the next Sandy Fairfax book. The setting is the Highland Games, so I’ve been boning up on all things Scottish. Sandy looks great in a kilt with the family tartan. After that, I’d like to wrap up my Psychedelic Spy series with a third book and then possibly start a new series before returning to another Sandy book. Who knows? So many ideas, so little time.

Thank you so much for visiting today!

Now Keep reading to find out about Sally’s Christmas Caper.

It’s Christmastime in Tinsel Town, and there’s plenty of ho-ho-homicide at the soon-to-open Santa’s Magic theme park, where bodies are dropping like snowflakes. Former pop star Sandy Fairfax has a killer job—he’s the emcee for the televised Miss North Pole beauty contest–er, scholarship pageant. But will the beautiful contestants make his girlfriend jealous? Or will she join him in his sleuthing? The deadly Christmas season begins at a celebrity bowling tournament when a pinsetter plops down a body instead of the pins. Throw in surfing Santas, a seductive executive’s wife, a sleazy tabloid editor, an egotistical movie rival and a gift-wrapped death trap, and it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Flower Power Fatality (The Psychedelic Spy Mysteries)
by Sally Carpenter

FLOWER POWER FATALITY is very true to the facts, and the spirit, of the 1960’s, in this case, in a quiet, out-of-the-way Midwest community.

The Cold War gets cozy in this retro-cozy spy caper set in 1967, a year of music, miniskirts—and murder! Actress Noelle McNabb works at the Country Christmas Family Fun Park in Yuletide, Indiana, but she longs for the bright lights of Hollywood.

Real-life drama comes her way when a stranger with a fatal gunshot wound stumbles across her doorstep. When she attempts to finds the man’s murderer, Noelle encounters a super-secret spy agency, SIAMESE (Special Intelligence Apparatus for Midwest Enemy Surveillance and Espionage). SIAMESE recruits Noelle on a quest to find missing microdots under the guidance of a street-wise agent, Destiny King. As Noelle goes undercover in a cheesy nightclub and faces the enemy in late-night chases, she uncovers family secrets and finds her moral values put to the test. Along with her pet cat, Ceebee, and the kooky residents of Yuletide, Noelle discovers it takes a village to catch a killer.

The Cunning Cruise Ship Caper by Sally Carpenter Great Escapes Book Tour – Review

great escape tour banner large cunning cuise ship caper640
It’s my turn today on the Cunning Cruise Ship Caper Great Escapes Book Tour!
This is the last day too!

I would have loved to go on a cruise with some of my teen idols. Right now The New Kids On The Block have a show on Pop TV called Rock This Boat that shows just some of what happens on these cruises. Donnie Wahlberg is one of my faves so I found myself watching this show just as I reading Sally’s book!

It’s been years since Sandy Fairfax was a teen idol and starred in his hit ‘70s television series Buddy Brave, Boy Sleuth, but he still has his fans. Now it’s 1993 and many of his grown-up fans see a leisurely cruise as the ideal vacation. So, when Sandy’s agent finds him a pleasant gig aboard the SS Zodiac, he jumps at the chance. And, when the offer includes a spot for his musician sister, Celeste, who is blind, Sandy sees an opportunity to re-engage with his estranged sibling. However, the brother-sister duo are barely aboard the ship, when Sandy finds a singer from another shipboard show murdered in his dressing room. When the ship’s security officer does little to investigate, Sandy feels obligated to jump in, even though he isn’t a detective––he just used to play one on TV. Soon he’s grilling potential suspects, including a burnt-out piano bar player, a Southern-fried magician, a blackmail victim, a ventriloquist with a sassy dummy and even a former flame. Will Sandy unmask the killer before the cruise ends? Will he connect with the girl of his dreams? Will he have time to enjoy the sights of Nassau? Or will he end up sleeping with the fishes in the Atlantic Ocean, another victim in this killer’s CUNNING CRUISE SHIP CAPER?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This third installment finds Sandy sailing away with some fans, some strangers, some strange performers, his estranged sister and a killer!! Sandy has changed a lot over the years and is trying to be a better man, the last thing he needed was to find another dead body. So he puts on his super sleuth shoes and tries to catch the murderer all while trying to repair his relationship with his sister.

Sally Carpenter has introduced us some interesting new characters. My favorite was Sandy’s sister, Celeste. She was a folk singer herself back in the day but when Sandy’s career took off her career stalled out and she became a bit of a recluse. Sandy had not seen her in years and she blames him for the demise of her career so it is important to him that she comes on the cruise with him. Celeste is also blind but I seemed to almost forget that some of the time. She makes some huge changes during this cruise.

The story is also well written and flowed very well. I really liked the way she writes Sandy. He is not an investigator at all, but he is not afraid to just go for it and ask questions of anyone and everyone. Things do not always go well with Sandy’s approach but in the end they work. You will feel sorry for him and giggle at the same time at some of the predicaments he gets himself into.

All the books in the series have been fun to read. I hope Sandy is out and about with another caper for us soon!

Sandy Fairfax, former teen idol and star of the ‘70s hit TV show “Buddy Brave, Boy Sleuth,” is now a middle-aged recovering alcoholic who realizes that making a comeback can be murder. He’s the guest star on “Off-Kelter,” a corny family situation comedy, and the lowest rated TV show of the 1993 fall season. Before rehearsals barely begin one of the actors drops dead at Sandy’s feet. He investigates, enlisting the aid of two of his new cast mates: a dwarf and an animal actor. During his snooping, we meet Sandy’s ex, his parents and his teenage son, all with their own “situations” going on. During rehearsals Sandy also encounters a beautiful choreographer—could this be love? Will Sandy solve the murder before the Friday night taping of “Off-Kelter” or will the elusive killer cancel our hero before the final credits? This book was inspired by the author’s experience working as a tour guide/page at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sally Carpenter has penned quite a mystery. This story is full of humor from start to finish.

Those of us of a certain age remember the posters of those teen idols hanging on our walls and anxiously awaiting the next issue of Tiger Beat.  We still swoon when the much older Shawn Cassidy appears on one of talk shows. This story brings back all those memories including some of the crazy sitcoms that have appeared on our televisions over the years.

Sandy Fairfax is quite a character trying to get his life together and stay sober so his ex-wife will allow him to spend time with his kids. His parents had a much different plan for him and he strives to raise himself just a little bit in their eyes.  He hopes this guest appearance will lead to more work but before the show is even taped one of the actors drops dead right in front of him. What is even worse he seems to the only concerned that a person died. The show continues to go on and the cops hardly even investigate.  He becomes consumed with the need to find out what happened and why. He gets help from 2 very unlikely places.  An actor from the show who happens to be a little person and a dog that is also on the show.

Very interesting characters is a unusual setting. There are twists, turns, fire and rain to add to the excitement.  This is the first book I have read by Sally Carpenter but I know it won’t be the last.
