Costumes & Cadavers: Sassy Supplies Cozy Mystery by Katherine H. Brown #Character GuestPost / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

It is my pleased to welcome Charity from Costumes & Cadavers:
Sassy Supplies Cozy Mystery

by Katherine H. Brown today to Escape With Dollycas!

Hi, there!

I’m Charity Basham, MC of Costumes & Cadavers. First, thanks for having me today. You’ve expressed interest in getting to know about me and the book where I live, so here goes.

Sassy Supplies Crafts & More is the name of the store that I own in the little town of Becksville, Texas. We have an array of supplies for crafts of all kinds and our customers are pretty diverse, too. I love to craft and sew and make things. The creativity outlet is refreshing and challenging. You never really know how something will turn out, but that’s part of the fun.

I also enjoy finding creative ways to get my customers to try out new crafts or hobbies. For example, in Costumes & Cadavers I hosted a Halloween party for employees and customers. The only catch: sew your own costume!

It was a blast, let me tell you! Well, until it wasn’t. But I won’t get into that here; you’ll see what I mean in the book.

Where was I?

Oh, yes. Customers. I have several regular customers who are beginners and others who are more skilled than myself in so many different arts and crafts. You’ve got older folks, like Bunny Neugenbauer, as well as louder than life personalities. Margo is one of the latter. From her outfits to her voice to her personality, loud is the absolute only word you can use to describe Margo best.

Me?

I’m just ordinary. Nothing special. I like pizza, especially chocolate chip pizza, and crafts, and I love my customers. Oh, and no matter what anyone says, I’m not a blonde. I simply have light, light, light, light brown hair. Probably the most interesting thing about me is my cat Jinx. At least, that is what my Persian bundle of fluff would tell you if he could talk. He’s a troublemaker and spoiled to the core, but I don’t know what I’d do without him.

Looks like I need to run. Big holiday craft night to prepare for! Catch you later.

Thanks, Charity for visiting today!!

Now keep reading to find out more about Costumes & Cadavers and its author!

Nobody ever plans to be the death of the party.

Party guests congratulate Charity Basham, owner of Sassy Supplies Crafts & More, on the scariness of her backyard skeleton decoration. Unfortunately, Charity didn’t put out any skeleton decorations.

With the discovery of a dead body, her Halloween party turns into a nightmare. With her fingerprints (and some white cat fur) are all over the murder weapon, Charity finds herself at the top of the suspect list.

Can she clear her name before the dishy Detective Sota arrests her for murder?

Potluck and Poison (Spy Kitty in the City) by Bailey Booth #Spotlight / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Potluck and Poison (Spy Kitty in the City)
by Bailey Booth

I am delighted to shine my spotlights on Potluck and Poison today by Bailey Booth!

About Potluck and Poison

Potluck and Poison (Spy Kitty in the City)
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Setting – Seattle
Independently Published (March 17, 2022)
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B09G1QN9B9

I always dreamed of being a part of my favorite show, Parking Lot Potluck, but I never expected them to ask me to help solve a murder.

Someone poisoned a dish on the popular cooking competition. The host is dead and my favorite judge is in critical condition. The only one who witnessed the crime was Great Dane, Chloe.

Persephone and I are off to Seattle to solve the crime, but things are much different behind the scenes. Have the cast and crew been working on a recipe for deception, or was it a contestant with a case of sour grapes who’s brought production to a halt?

Whatever I do, I have to keep my inner fangirl in check, or my favorite show could get eliminated for good.

About Bailey Booth

Bailey Booth is an animal lover, travel enthusiast, and avid reader. She drinks way too many soy lattes and will probably laugh at your jokes.

She also likes long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners…oh wait.

Wrong profile.

Bailey’s been writing and amateur sleuthing since she was a kid. Fun fact: Spy Kitty in the City came to her in a dream. Follow your dreams!

Dead Amid the Dogwoods (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth) by Cassidy Salem #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Dead Amid the Dogwoods (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth)
by Cassidy Salem

About Dead Amid the Dogwoods

Dead Amid the Dogwoods (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth)
Cozy Mystery Novella
5th in Series
Characters travel to Pennsylvania
Independently Published (December 1, 2021)
Print length ‏ : ‎ 119 pages
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B09M48GL21

Nothing disrupts a celebration quite like an uninvited corpse.

Adina already knows the city can be a dangerous place. That’s why she’s looking forward to a stress-free weekend in rural Pennsylvania with her favorite detective. Maybe not all that stress-free. They are attending an engagement party and Adina will be meeting Jonathan’s family for the first time.

Except the holiday weekend takes a deadly turn when leading industrialists, a hard-core environmentalist, and a bevy of wealthy partygoers converge on the Riverfront Lodge, and the couple stumbles upon yet another dead body. Drawn into the ensuing investigation, making a good impression on Jonathan’s parents is the least of her worries.

A standalone novella, Dead amid the Dogwoods is the fifth mystery in the Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth Series.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Adina and Jonathan leave the fast pace of D.C. behind for an engagement party for his brother and bride to be in rural Pennsylvania. But even with a trip to Hershey Park and the party they still have time to find a body and get mixed up in the investigation.

I am so happy that Adina and Jonathan finally got some alone time and that she was able to meet his family and that they welcomed her with open arms. They could quickly see that she was a strong, smart woman and the perfect partner for their son/brother. Again, the main characters were surrounded by unique characters that developed quickly before our eyes.

The mystery was so interesting because there were two big events at the venue where the murder occurred and people at both events had a variety of connections, misdeeds, and secrets. Jonathan was reluctantly asked to assist on the case because of his background in solving homicides which allowed him to sit in on some of the interviews with suspects. He did not sit on the one with his brother’s future father-in-law though. Adina found herself in the right places at the right time to do a little sleuthing too. But it would be one key piece of evidence that would reveal the killer.

I loved that the family took a little side trip to Hershey. We had a family vacation run through there several years ago so it was very easy for me to understand the variety and plentiful purchases made at the gift shop. It truly is a great place to visit for all ages. I would love to take my grandchildren there someday. I will pass on the bit of trouble these characters ran into there, but it did allow for another trip to the gift shop.

Dead Amid the Dogwoods has a wonderful balance between mystery and family. A quick read, I enjoyed every page. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what Ms. Salem has in store for her characters next.

Exercise is good for you, or so they said. So why is the Pilates instructor dead?

Adina signed up for Pilates because she wanted to get some exercise, not to find another body. Initially ruled an accidental death, the victim’s business partner has her doubts, which are soon reinforced by a series of suspicious incidents. With no obvious motives or suspects, Adina sets out to identify the killer – with or without help from her favorite detective.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Adina is back and her roommate and “fitness freak” Lynda has talked her into trying pilates. The new gym Fun & Fitness just opened and it is near their home and Cutie Pie Rescue where she volunteers and walks dogs so maybe this class won’t be so bad. Adina is ready to snap some pictures of a new pooch at the rescue but realizes she doesn’t have her phone. Backtracking she and Lynda head back to Fun & Fitness to look for her phone. On their arrival, the phone is forgotten when they find their pilates instructor, Bonnie, on the floor unconscious with her face red and swollen and a bottle of water by her side. They also find the instructor’s phone with an open call to 911. So Bonnie knew something was wrong and tried to get help. Adina and Lynda learn the next day that Bonnie died. Police have it classified as accidental but her business partner and co-owner of the gym Piper, doesn’t believe it was.

With Bonnie gone and Piper with a new baby at home, huge adjustments need to be made at Fun & Fitness. Adina volunteers to help in any way she can and she also decides to do her thing and find out what really happened to Bonnie. Her favorite detective has a lot on his plate with working at the Metro Police Department and studying for his master’s in criminology at Georgetown so he and Adina aren’t spending much time together but she will fill him in on everything when they finally meet face to face. That is if she doesn’t get in trouble before then.

Adina is a strong, independent woman and she is a terrific amateur sleuth, which is a good thing because she does keep finding dead bodies. She has a huge heart. She volunteers at a pet rescue and recently adopted a pup of her own, Bonzo, and convinced her neighbor to adopt one too, Speckles. She also didn’t think twice about helping Piper after Bonnie’s death. Both women she just met but she automatically felt compelled to help. Of course, helping Piper meant she would get to check out the business’s files, Bonnie’s computer, and her home to try to find any clues that could lead to a killer. There was a big bonus too, she was able to meet Bonnie’s boxer named Harley and share caretaking duties with Piper’s husband Noah.

Ms. Salem surrounds Adina with strong characters like herself in her roommates and Joan the driving force behind Cutie Pie Rescue. Her relationship with Jonathan is progressing nicely but he plays a small role in this story. I do love all the characters she has created for large roles or small, human and canine. It is a diverse cast with believable lives and they all have a purpose in the story. The dialogues all ring true too.

This author also knows how to write a complex compelling mystery in less than 200 pages. She has each scene so well-plotted. It is uncanny the way Adina finds one clue after another that others just don’t see. I thought I had the killer firm in my mind and then there was a twist that as the author intended drew my attention away from that person. Then she twisted things all up again and I was chasing new leads right along with Adina. I really enjoy mysteries that make me think and Cassidy Salem’s stories always do that.

Fit For Murder features a protagonist with a “gift”. A gift that just keeps on giving and that has pulled me into every book in this series. Each book in this series can be read all on its but they are even better read in order. I am really excited to read Dead Amid the Dogwoods which is available now!

Special Guest Elle Wren Burke – Author of Tea & Talismans: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries) #AuthorInterview / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Tea & Talismans: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery
(Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries)
by Elle Wren Burke

I am so happy to welcome Elle Wren Burke to
Escape With Dollycas today!

Hi Elle.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me! I’m a paranormal cozy mystery author who writes witty, fun books with strong females as protagonists. I’m also a huge reader. I love everything about books—the smell, the way they feel in my hands, and all the places they can take me. I live in Arizona and love the Southwest. I based the town Prickly Pear in my first cozy mystery series on the cities of Tucson and Taos. I love cozy activities including puzzles, board games, baking, and bubble baths.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

  • I have two Masters degreesone in Geography and another in Business.
  • Im disabled. I have a rare condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which affects all of my joints, causing chronic pain and mobility challenges.
  • I once lost my wallet in two feet of snow. I couldnt find it for the life of me, but when I let my dog out to pee, he peed right on top of it, melting the snow around it. Yes, I kept using the walletI just cleaned it first!

What is the first book you remember reading?

The Berenstain Bears! I remember reading all the picture books as well as chapter books. They really inspired me to read. Though, I would have sworn on my life that they were called the Berenstein bears, but I recently learned they’re the Berenstain bears (stain instead of stein!). I’ve been wrong for over 30 years.

What are you reading now?

I read lots of genres other than mysteries, including fantasy and romance! Currently, Im reading The Last Graduate, a fantasy by Naomi Novak, A Touch of Ruin, a romance by Scarlett St. Clair, and A Collection of Secrets, a cozy mystery by Brook Peterson.

What books have most inspired you?

One book that really inspired me is The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. The premise is so unique and the mystery so well woven that it knocked my socks off. I was so impressed. It really got me thinking about writing. Other inspirations include the paranormal cozy mystery series Teas and Temptations by Cindy Stark and Accidental Alchemist Mysteries by Gigi Pandian.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I love mysteries myself, so that sparked my interest. I also love sitting down to plot a mystery, thinking about all the details and relationships. I enjoy trying to think from the reader’s perspective—who might they think is a suspect? And I absolutely love the reader feedback on that as well! I’m always surprised at the theories readers come up with as to whodunnit!

Do you have a special place where you like to write?

The couch! I live with chronic pain and find sitting in chairs to be very challenging, so I mostly write on my couch, where I can recline and use fourteen pillows to get comfortable.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

Everywhere! Things jump out at me from news articles, online forums, conversations with friends and family, and a whole host of other places! Sometimes they randomly pop into my head and I have no idea why. Other times, I sit down and think about things I’m well versed in that other people might find interesting, such as the desert landscape—I think, how might I use this setting in a unique way to inform my character development or even make for a unique crime?

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

Honestly, the marketing! As an independent author, I’m in charge of all my own marketing. It can be very challenging. There are days when all I want to do is write, but I have to focus on marketing. I’ve gotten the hang of certain aspects, but there’s always more to learn. It gets to be quite fun at times, though!

What do you think makes a good story?

This is a big question, so I’ll just go with the most important aspect to me. A good story needs to have heart. I want to feel the soul of the story and the souls of the characters as I’m reading. I want to really connect with the story. A story could have an amazing plot, but if I can’t feel its heart, I’ll have a hard time enjoying it!

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

My main character, Alara. She’s kind and loves to help people. I cherish both of these qualities in my own life, always striving to help people more and radiate positivity and kindness. She’s also a fierce friend to her small friend group, which I aim for myself.

One main difference, Alara doesn’t curse. She has a fun tradition with her mom where they make up phrases to use instead of cursing. I, on the other hand, curse like a sailor.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

There aren’t too many cozy mysteries set in the American Southwest, where I live, so the setting is pretty different. I try to focus on the unique aspects of the desert to really bring it alive for people who aren’t familiar with the landscape. It’s so beautiful here and I love sharing that beauty with others.

I also think Alara and her detection techniques make her different. Not only does Alara have some unique psychic abilities compared to other psychics, but she uses modern sleuthing approaches, such as social media and other online/technological resources.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Book 3 in the Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries series is on the way! The title is Canines & Cacti, so as you can guess, it might focus even more on dogs than the first two books. I’m anticipating a spring release. I’m really excited for this book, as I think the mystery is really fun and different.

Thank you Elle for visiting today. It was fun getting to know you!

Alara Beatty never thought her life would change so fast.

She’s only just begun to use her psychic abilities, and she’s already being met with a slew of truths and challenges. In a short span of time, she’s met her biological aunt, solved a murder, and discovered that she was given up for adoption due to a mysterious prophecy.

But that’s certainly not all that’s in store for Alara. Suddenly, her biological family members are flocking to her small town of Prickly Pear, Arizona to meet her…and evaluate her psychic strength.

As Alara begins to get used to her new situation, her cousin Todd receives a mysterious death threat…one that she knows to take seriously. Together, she and Todd must investigate the threats and try to determine who they’re coming from—before it’s far too late.
