Synopsis

Joni Harte knew her first job out of college would be tough, but she didn’t expect it to be murder.

With the ink mostly dry on her journalism degree, Joni accepts the position of news reporter and photographer for The Ogallala Gazette. She’s tasked with chronicling all of the goings-on of the quirky characters who inhabit this small Missouri town.

While investigating the identity of the first murder victim, Joni makes an enemy of the local sheriff. Worse, she catches the attention of a violent stalker who promises to cure Joni of her curiosity.

As the Ogallala County Fair comes to an end, Joni must uncover the truth before she comes to hers.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A new amateur sleuth hits the cozy scene. Joni Harte, fresh out of college, moves to Ogallala to start her journalism career.  Her stories this week will resolve around the county fair. Parades, carnival rides, kids with their sheep and cows, fried foods, a beauty contest, just general fair stuff. That is until murder is added to the fair’s fare. Joni finds herself asking the right questions to the wrong people and may end up paying more than her fair share.

Annette Drake squeezes one heck of mystery into 100 pages. The synopsis call the inhabitants of this Missouri town “quirky”, well they are that and then some. A few are totally off their rocker. The dialogue is was fantastic and fun.

The story does include quite a bit of humor but their are suspenseful moments too. Pretzel like twists kept me guessing but I figured out a little bit before Jodie did.

I think this series is off to a great start. I look forward to more stories about Jodie and her family and the residents of Ogallala.

enjoyable 2016

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 2016 Week #1

It's Monday! What Are You ReadingIt’s Monday! What Are You Reading?
Hosted by Book Date

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.  It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile!

Happy Monday Everyone!!

I had taken 2 weeks off from the Great Escapes Book Tours. Two weeks without that little bit of stress of promoting was sure nice. Today I am back at with 7 tours and 2 more starting on Friday. I thought the extra time would give me a chance to get caught up on things and do a bit of blog housekeeping. I did get my Ratings graphics updated and a button made for my Literary Escapes Personal Challenge, formerly Where Are You Reading? that was hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. I still need to add all of this years books to the State Pages. I hope to get that done soon and stay on top of it better this year.

I did spend a lot of time with family and some late nights reading. With the holidays and Mr. Dollycas home on vacation my schedule was all messed up. How did you spend the holidays?

Now here’s what I read and what I have planned for this week.

Dollycas’s Best Reads 2015

best reads 2015
2015 was a great year for books. All the books below received my Paradise rating, meaning I wanted to give them more than 5 stars. Some were the first books in a new series, while others were from series I have loved for years. This year a short story even makes the list.

I read almost 200 books again this year. So many received 5 star reviews. The authors continue to impress me with their fantastic stories.

2015 was also a year of shock and sadness. My son passed away in March and my friend, author Joyce Lavene, passed away in October. Both are hardly ever out of my thoughts. I have found some comfort escaping into good books like these.

What were your favorite books this year? Please share them in the comment section below so we can all see them and add them to our wish lists!

Looking ahead to 2016 I see so many wonderful books in our future. New stories from our favorite authors and new authors bringing us their stories. Sadly some of my favorite series have ended or we will see the last books in 2016. The publishing world continues to evolve. I used to think I would only read print books, but this year I read more than 70 books on my Kindle and some of them made this list.

I hope you have enjoyed my reviews, recommendations, and giveaways. It has been a pleasure being your Escape Into A Good Book Travel Agent this year. I am excited for the new year as I start my 7th year blogging! I hope to book many more literary escapes for you all to enjoy!

Four holiday short stories – quick reads for the busiest time of year, including a bit of Christmas magic.

Story 1 – The Rebels

Story 2 – The Perfect Gift

Story 3 – Seems Like Old Times

Story 4 – Luke’s Gift

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Rebels is a bit of a futuristic tale as friends gather for Thanksgiving. I would love to know how the story continues with these characters.

The Perfect Gift is about changes in family dynamics during the holiday season. This was a beautiful story.

Seems Like Old Times shows what happens when an ex comes to the holiday dinner. I thought the story was going one way and it went another.

Luke’s Gift was my favorite of the bunch. A special visitor changes Christmas. This one brought a tear to my eye.

These were short quick reads for me as I am struggling to get into the Christmas spirit this year. Very enjoyable. Wonderfully written.

Review/Giveaway – Engaged in Danger by Barbara Venkataraman

engaged in dangerEngaged in Danger: A Jamie Quinn Mystery
4th in Series
Cozy Mystery
Setting – Florida
Self Published September 11, 2015
Print Length: 242 pages

Finally, life is good for reluctant family law attorney, Jamie Quinn–her father may get his visa soon, her boyfriend is the bomb, and her law practice is growing like crazy–but when she agrees to take on a high-profile divorce case, everything falls apart. What looked like an opportunity to work with her friend Grace and make some serious bucks has turned into a deadly game, one that could destroy their friendship and tear their town apart. Why couldn’t Jamie just leave well enough alone?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I reviewed the first 3 books in this series back in July.  Engaged in Danger picks up where we left off and packs another huge punch. The other three were basically novellas that could be read together for 3 mysteries in the length of a regular novel. While we did get to know the characters, this one comes in at 242 pages and gives the author more time to let the plot develop and for us readers to become more wrapped up in the drama.

Nan Glasser wants a divorce and every law office has turned her way stating conflict of interest. Marvin Glasser is a real S.O.B. who has his fingers in way to many pies and that may be deadly. Nan just wants out and begs Jamie to take her case. With Kip in Australia for 3 months, a big case may be just what Jamie needs but she is smart enough to know she can’t do it on her own. After trying to get her friend Grace and her partners to take the case, it is decided that Jamie and Grace with an assist private investigator Duke, with take the case.  Then the mayhem begins as truths are revealed, and clues lead somewhere unexpected, and Jamie finds herself in a bit of hot water.

Barbara Venkataraman has given us another smart story with a very tight plot that just flows so effortlessly.

These characters a interesting and fun. Jamie is the underdog and I wanted to see her win. I just hated Marvin Glasser. He is manipulative and petty. He may have met his match in Jamie Quinn. I was also pretty upset with Kip. The relationship with Jamie is new and was crazy that he took off for 3 months with saying good-bye. He made up for it a little but he is not back in my good graces yet. Both Duke and Grace suffered some pitfalls too. The dialogue between them all was fantastic. Even in stressful situations there was room for a little humor.

Each of these stories is better than the last. Venkataraman just keeps topping herself. I hope she is busy working on #5.

Review – Snow Deer and Cocoa Cheer by Joanne DeMaio

Paperback: 304 pages

New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio delivers a delightful novel about following your heart on the snow-dusted journey home.

Jane March’s greeting cards have lost their jingle. While worried about her job at New England’s Cobblestone Cards, she stumbles upon a forgotten box of her mother’s nostalgic paintings. They depict small-town Addison’s covered bridge and red barns and picket-fenced colonials. If only Jane’s designs could capture the same heart. When her mother shows her how with a Christmas to-do list of memories in the making, Jane gets checking.

Wes Davis has come home again, jilted and a little bitter. His autumn wedding’s off, and so is his holiday spirit. Even seeing the rustic wooden deer his father whittles by lantern light doesn’t help as he settles back into the shabby Victorian home of his childhood. It is only when Wes encounters the sparkling Jane March on his winding mail route that his cold winter heart begins to thaw.

As the fall months turn wintry, and the season merry, a funny thing happens in this charming Connecticut town: Jane and Wes check off items on that Christmas itinerary, together. But falling in love wasn’t included on the list. Or was it?

Snow Deer and Cocoa Cheer is a treasured keepsake, reminding us that like winter’s first snow, life brings a beautiful flurry of its own unexpected moments.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another extraordinary story from Joanne DeMaio. If this story doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit nothing will.

Jane March and Wes Davis are both at crossroads in their lives when the reconnect in Addison Cove. She is recouping after an physical injury and he is recouping from an emotional one. Their journey over the next few weeks is almost magical.

Jane is an artist but it is the author that breathes life into her watercolors and the beautiful places around Addison Cove. Oh my, I was able to envision them so clearly in my mind. The extra little touches Jane added to her card covers positively sparkled in the author’s words. Just joyful to read.

This is going to be a hard holiday season for me, the first since my son’s death. It is stories like this one that are going to help me endure the days. I was able to escape to Connecticut for an afternoon. I did shed a few tears because Kris is never out of my thoughts but Wes and Jane’s story made me smile. All the characters were wonderful and the way the town rallies together just made me feel warm all over.

I am posting this on Thanksgiving because it was the only day I had open when I was offered this book for review and there was no way I was going to miss it. I have loved everything this author writes and her books always seem to arrive when my life needs a bit of a lift and I thank Joanne DeMaio so much for that. So my recommendation is this,  click on the book cover and buy it and download it now, then  go enjoy the day with your family. Then on Saturday evening when you have had enough of all the Black Friday and the Saturday sales, make yourself a nice cup of cocoa and head to your favorite reading spot and enjoy Snow Deer and Cocoa Cheer. Come back when you finish and tell me all what you thought! I hope you think it was a perfect escape too!

Synopsis

The chill in the air isn’t the only change October is bringing to Casper, Wyoming. Jake Rand, local attorney specializing in juvenile cases, is being courted to run for county attorney and a killer is stalking one of the city’s leading families. With Casper’s only homicide detective out of commission, Jake and his wife Emma, a therapist in private practice, step in to crack the case. Will the accidental detectives be able to keep the killer from striking again?

Death Changes Everything” is the fourth book in The Jake and Emma Mystery series. If you like your mysteries on the cozy side, with challenging puzzles and characters you’d be happy to call friends, this series is sure to be one of your favorites.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was so pleased to see this story. I enjoyed my first three visits too Casper very much.

In this installment Emma and Jake find themselves assisting the police when the lead detective is sidelined. He may be down but he is not out, he just needs them to do the legwork. Then they meet and collectively strategize how to catch the killer.

This was another really fast read for me. This one is about 100 pages longer than the previous books in the series so the author was able to give many more details about the characters and setting so I found myself even more invested. The pace is fast and the writing is solid.

The main plot has many moving parts and involves many people, some of the city’s leading families. That means the investigation steps on a lot of toes and can be very dangerous.

The secondary plot has Jake debating whether to through his hat in the ring to run for county attorney. This would be a huge change for him, switching sides from defense to prosecution. Plus it is no secret there has been corruption in the office previously so he would have a big job on his hands. Also if he does decide to run and wins how would affect these little investigations he seems to find himself in the middle of.  A very interesting dynamic coming for this series in the future.

Like the previous books, friendship, a couple that is truly in love, drama, and plenty of action action fill the pages. The author continues to improve with each story and this is the best one yet!  I highly recommend!
