Special Guest Elle Wren Burke – Author of Tea & Talismans: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries) #AuthorInterview / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Tea & Talismans: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery
(Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries)
by Elle Wren Burke

I am so happy to welcome Elle Wren Burke to
Escape With Dollycas today!

Hi Elle.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me! I’m a paranormal cozy mystery author who writes witty, fun books with strong females as protagonists. I’m also a huge reader. I love everything about books—the smell, the way they feel in my hands, and all the places they can take me. I live in Arizona and love the Southwest. I based the town Prickly Pear in my first cozy mystery series on the cities of Tucson and Taos. I love cozy activities including puzzles, board games, baking, and bubble baths.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

  • I have two Masters degreesone in Geography and another in Business.
  • Im disabled. I have a rare condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which affects all of my joints, causing chronic pain and mobility challenges.
  • I once lost my wallet in two feet of snow. I couldnt find it for the life of me, but when I let my dog out to pee, he peed right on top of it, melting the snow around it. Yes, I kept using the walletI just cleaned it first!

What is the first book you remember reading?

The Berenstain Bears! I remember reading all the picture books as well as chapter books. They really inspired me to read. Though, I would have sworn on my life that they were called the Berenstein bears, but I recently learned they’re the Berenstain bears (stain instead of stein!). I’ve been wrong for over 30 years.

What are you reading now?

I read lots of genres other than mysteries, including fantasy and romance! Currently, Im reading The Last Graduate, a fantasy by Naomi Novak, A Touch of Ruin, a romance by Scarlett St. Clair, and A Collection of Secrets, a cozy mystery by Brook Peterson.

What books have most inspired you?

One book that really inspired me is The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. The premise is so unique and the mystery so well woven that it knocked my socks off. I was so impressed. It really got me thinking about writing. Other inspirations include the paranormal cozy mystery series Teas and Temptations by Cindy Stark and Accidental Alchemist Mysteries by Gigi Pandian.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I love mysteries myself, so that sparked my interest. I also love sitting down to plot a mystery, thinking about all the details and relationships. I enjoy trying to think from the reader’s perspective—who might they think is a suspect? And I absolutely love the reader feedback on that as well! I’m always surprised at the theories readers come up with as to whodunnit!

Do you have a special place where you like to write?

The couch! I live with chronic pain and find sitting in chairs to be very challenging, so I mostly write on my couch, where I can recline and use fourteen pillows to get comfortable.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

Everywhere! Things jump out at me from news articles, online forums, conversations with friends and family, and a whole host of other places! Sometimes they randomly pop into my head and I have no idea why. Other times, I sit down and think about things I’m well versed in that other people might find interesting, such as the desert landscape—I think, how might I use this setting in a unique way to inform my character development or even make for a unique crime?

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

Honestly, the marketing! As an independent author, I’m in charge of all my own marketing. It can be very challenging. There are days when all I want to do is write, but I have to focus on marketing. I’ve gotten the hang of certain aspects, but there’s always more to learn. It gets to be quite fun at times, though!

What do you think makes a good story?

This is a big question, so I’ll just go with the most important aspect to me. A good story needs to have heart. I want to feel the soul of the story and the souls of the characters as I’m reading. I want to really connect with the story. A story could have an amazing plot, but if I can’t feel its heart, I’ll have a hard time enjoying it!

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

My main character, Alara. She’s kind and loves to help people. I cherish both of these qualities in my own life, always striving to help people more and radiate positivity and kindness. She’s also a fierce friend to her small friend group, which I aim for myself.

One main difference, Alara doesn’t curse. She has a fun tradition with her mom where they make up phrases to use instead of cursing. I, on the other hand, curse like a sailor.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

There aren’t too many cozy mysteries set in the American Southwest, where I live, so the setting is pretty different. I try to focus on the unique aspects of the desert to really bring it alive for people who aren’t familiar with the landscape. It’s so beautiful here and I love sharing that beauty with others.

I also think Alara and her detection techniques make her different. Not only does Alara have some unique psychic abilities compared to other psychics, but she uses modern sleuthing approaches, such as social media and other online/technological resources.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Book 3 in the Prickly Pear Psychic Mysteries series is on the way! The title is Canines & Cacti, so as you can guess, it might focus even more on dogs than the first two books. I’m anticipating a spring release. I’m really excited for this book, as I think the mystery is really fun and different.

Thank you Elle for visiting today. It was fun getting to know you!

Now keep reading to find out about Tea & Talismans.

Ghost Agents (The Ghost Agents Trilogy) by Nita DeBorde #Guest Post / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour – @DebordeNita

Ghost Agents
by Nita DeBorde

Author Nita Deborde is putting together a short story collection.
The collection will be called Ghost Agents: Lone Star
She is hoping to have it spin off of the Ghost Agents series when the trilogy is complete.

Here is an except from the collection.

San Jacinto (excerpt)

According to the Bureau records Craig had reviewed, the energy projections tethered to the San Jacinto battleground site consisted of two soldiers from the Texian army and close to a dozen Mexican soldiers. He wasn’t sure exactly where on the grounds to look for the projections, if he would even be able to find them at all, but he had the rest of the night to search if he had to.

While the floodlights shining on the 565-foot-tall monument provided a degree of illumination, he still proceeded slowly and carefully across the darkened grounds, not wanting to use a flashlight in the open field and potentially draw attention to his location.

His concerns about not being able to find any projections were quickly squelched when he heard an enthusiastic cry of “Remember the Alamo! And Remember Goliad!” from some distance away to his right. He turned and began making his way in that direction, using the noise of the commotion as his guide.

It didn’t take long before he spotted several translucent forms gathered near a grove of trees on the edge of the battleground site. A half dozen of the projections were standing in a cluster while two others ran around them, shouting the famous battle cry of the Texas War for Independence.

Craig stood to the side, studying the bizarre scene, uncertain how best to engage the projections. He cleared his throat, drawing the attention of a couple of the Mexican soldiers. He held up his Bureau agent’s badge. The incandescent glow shown through the darkness, and the projections nodded.

“They will be finished in a few minutes,” one of the soldiers called out to him in a thick Spanish accent. The insignia on his uniform indicated he had been a lieutenant in the Mexican army. He motioned with his head toward the two Texian projections, still running in circles around them. “They just need to get it out of their system each night.”

Craig nodded and waited. The real-life battle had only lasted eighteen minutes. He hoped the projections’ “re-enactment” wouldn’t take any longer than that.

As if on cue, the two Texian soldiers began cheering and congratulating each other. The Mexican solider who had originally spoken nodded in Craig’s direction, as if to say, “See, I told you.” Craig stifled a chuckle and made his way toward the crowd of projections.

As he approached, the lieutenant shrugged his shoulders. “They really aren’t half bad once they realize the battle is over.”

Craig nodded. Having been born and raised in the Houston area, he was no stranger to the intense Texan pride that had always characterized the state’s inhabitants, even from its very inception.

“What brings a Bureau agent out to the battleground this evening?” one of the Texian soldiers asked as he and his compatriot joined the group.

Craig appreciated the chance to get straight to business. “Agent Connelly has expressed some concerns about your last assessment interview. He said none of you could remember how you’ve been spending your nights lately, beyond this nightly re-enactment that is.”

The projections exchanged hesitant looks.

“And this gives the Bureau cause for concern?” the Mexican lieutenant finally asked.

“A little, yes,” Craig admitted. He was careful to keep his own emotions even so as not to betray just how much concern the situation caused him.

“Are we in trouble?” one of the Texian soldiers asked, casting a wary eye at his fellow projections.

Craig smiled at them all. “Of course not. Part of my job is to make sure everything is okay with you and assist you in whatever way I can. This matter simply struck me as something I might want to check on”

The projections seemed to relax a little.

“That’s good to know,” the other Texian said with a smile to his fellow soldier. “We have to admit we were a little worried about it, too. We just didn’t know if we should…”

The soldier froze as if someone had pushed an unseen pause button. Craig waited for him to finish his sentence, but he just continued to stare straight ahead with a blank expression on his face.

Craig looked at the other projections. They all had the same distant look in their eyes, as if they were listening to a song Craig couldn’t hear.

Craig approached the projection nearest to him and waved a hand in front of his face without receiving a response. He pulled out his cell phone to call in some Bureau reinforcements but stopped when the entire group of projections began moving in unison toward the tree line.

Craig watched in open-mouthed confusion for a few seconds, then snapped himself back to the task at hand. He pushed record on his phone’s video camera, though he had little hope of getting a clear video in the dim lighting.

The group of projections didn’t make a sound as they continued slowly toward the trees.

Craig followed them, intent on capturing the strange behavior as thoroughly as his technology would allow. Since he wasn’t watching where he was going, he stepped into a small indention in the ground and stumbled slightly. A small twig snapped as he took a step to balance himself.

Almost instantly, the group of projections froze once again. Their attention remained focused straight in front of them, fixed on something in the trees. Craig held his breath, waiting to see what they would do next.

Several agonizing seconds passed, then just as quickly as their attention had been captured, the spell seemed to break. The group of projections began looking around, confused and disoriented.

One of the Texian soldiers spotted Craig and a flash of recognition lit his face. “I have to say,” he began with a chuckle, “we’re mighty relieved we aren’t in any trouble because of our memory lapses.”

Craig forced a smile, despite the sickening knot in the pit of his stomach. “Of course. I’m just glad to see y’all seem to be doing fine.”

The projections began to talk amongst themselves as they floated across the ground, heading off to spend the rest of the night engaged in their usual activities, without any recollection of what had just happened.

Craig’s hand shook as he returned his phone to his pocket. How was he ever going to explain this to his superiors at the Bureau? He only hoped the video footage could be cleaned up enough for them to see it for themselves.

He took a deep breath and one hesitant step toward where he had left his car parked on the side of the road but froze as an eerie sensation came over him.

Someone was watching him from the darkness of the grove of trees.

Now keep reading to learn about Ghost Agents, the first book in the trilogy.

To the residents and tourists of Galveston Island, Claire Abelard is the friendly young woman who works at the local candy store by day and leads ghost tours of the island’s haunted locations by night. They don’t realize this persona is a cover for Claire’s real job as an agent of the Bureau for Historical Preservation, a clandestine organization that monitors and assists energy projections, or the entities more commonly known as “ghosts.”

When projections begin disappearing from around the island, Claire worries that history may be repeating itself. She launches a dangerous investigation and uncovers a sinister, arcane organization whose agenda threatens not only Galveston’s ghosts, but everything she has worked her whole life to protect.

The truth behind the disappearances rocks Claire’s world to its core and shows her that ghosts aren’t the only things that can come back to haunt you.

When hockey coach Renata Sanchez asks for Callie’s help exposing her ex-husband’s nefarious activities, Callie hesitates. After all, Renata’s brother, Detective Raul Sanchez, has been known to bristle at Callie’s interference. But with her own second-chance romance on rocky turf and her best friend’s engagement to a man Callie doesn’t entirely trust, she could use the distraction of an investigation.

We Are 100 by Nathan Timmel #Review

We Are 100
Suspense/Thriller
Independently published (March 19, 2021)
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 259 pages
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 979-8749990232
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 259 pages
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 979-8561728617

After losing his wife, Evan Francart is depressed. He has an ax to grind with the pharmaceutical company that jacked up the price of her medications but feels powerless against a billion-dollar corporation.

Then he meets Cassandra.

She shows Evan a way to both end his life and become a hero. With her guidance, Evan interrupts a company board meeting and blows the building sky-high.

As FBI agents Susan Chamberlain and Michael Godwin discover, Evan is the first of many. Ninety-nine more like him wait anonymously in the wings, their targets just as personal as Evan’s: the prosecutor who lets rapists walk free, the inept surgeon who maims patients yet keeps operating, the phony evangelist preying on those seeking solace… and that’s just the beginning.

Will the FBI unearth Cassandra’s identity before all 100 have carried out their plans?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sadly, Evan Francart lost his wife because in part, because of high drug prices, which leaves him very upset with the responsible pharmaceutical company. That is when Cassandra enters his life and gives him a way to make the company pay. Her plan leaves him and several others dead.

FBI agents Susan Chamberlain and Michael Godwin are assigned to Evan’s case and what they find is mind-blowing. Evan is the first of a group of 100 that have connected to Cassandra with various unknown targets. Scared by all the possible tragedies in the future their mission is to find Cassandra and the other 99 people before more people are killed. Unfortunately, more souls are lost before they even get organized. Every minute counts if they have any hope of stopping the carnage.

The 100 are sick of getting screwed, the short end of the stick, the rich get richer, and the guilty getting off. It is time to do something but is following Cassandra’s instructions the right thing?

Evan Francart’s plight grabbed a hold of me right away especially after the past two years of my cancer treatments. Drug costs are crazy! The man was clearly pushed to his limits. I have to say the suicide element triggered me a little bit but looking at the big picture that had to be a feature of Cassandra’s plan. Mr. Timmel did a great job of presenting Evan as a character most people would be moved by, he is very human, with natural feelings after suffering such a loss. Someone easy for someone to prey on and force their agenda. We get snippets of other people connected to Cassandra but not as in-depth as Evan. Their reasons for vengeance are varied and some even more harrowing. The 100 are dealing with corruption on so many levels and the author has written the story in a way that really makes the reader evaluate life through their eyes.

The FBI agents are presently realistically too. It was very interesting to follow their process and thinking. You can feel their drive to solve this case and the way they banter theories around to try to make sense of what is happening is eye-opening. Susan and Michael are new partners and I really enjoyed their dialogues. Serious when warranted but some funny conversations as well.

We Are 100 is full of action right from the start. The pace slows as the agents work the case but rachets right back up again as danger mounts. Mr. Timmel has constructed his story with a nice balance told from several points of view in a way that makes the book impossible to put down. The ending was fantastic. I can tell he did a ton of research to make the entire drama plausible and real. It is a book that will stick with you long after you reach the final page. I can easily see this story adapted for a movie of the week.

I know this is stand-alone suspense and this is the author’s first fiction novel but agents Chamberlain and Godwin were very smart and entertaining. I would definitely read another story or more featuring them.

Cozy Wednesday featuring Arrivals and Arrests (An Isle of Man Ghostly Cozy) by Diana Xarissa #Review / #Giveaway @AuthorDXDunn

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I came across this author while searching for X authors for my Alphabet Soup – Author Edition Challenge and am so glad I did.

Arrivals and Arrests (An Isle of Man Ghostly Cozy)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Isle of Man
Independently Published (November 17, 2016)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 230 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1537699547
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1537699547
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B01KQWEU2U

The first book in a new series by the author of the Aunt Bessie – Isle of Man Cozy Mystery series.

Fenella Woods has only met a few people during the twenty-four hours she’s been in Douglas, the capital city of the Isle of Man. She’s shocked when she discovers one of them dead in an alley behind her apartment building.

Struggling to adapt to her new life in a foreign country seems easy compared to coping with finding herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Nearly fifty and newly single, Fenella meets a handsome police inspector, a dashing new neighbor, and a sophisticated businessman, all of whom have her questioning her determination to remain unattached.

Having a ghost for a roommate and a kitten as an uninvited houseguest has her questioning her decision to start a new life on the small island in the Irish Sea after all.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Fenella Woods has inherited her Aunt Mona’s apartment and has just arrived in the capital city of Isle of Man. This is her chance to start over and write the book she has been dreaming about. It also gets her far away from the ex she left behind in the states.

Coming home after a trip to the nearby grocery store she finds a dead body in the alley behind her new home. The man seems familiar but with him lying on his stomach she can’t see his face, plus she has not met many people in Douglas yet. But following this death, she does meet a few people, like a very easy on the eyes police inspector, a neighbor who is also pretty good looking, and a hunky businessman too. She also becomes fast friends with her quirky aunt’s friend and neighbor. It is because of her that Fenella finds a wonderful pub just down the street from the Promenade View Apartments.

Fenella also finds she has inherited a roommate, the ghost of her aunt who is not quite ready to start her afterlife. A kitten zips into her apartment and life too. The kitten she is fine with but her aunt not so much, especially when she tries to coax her into investigating the murders.

Her life on the island is nothing like she ever imagined. She just hopes she lives long enough to enjoy it.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last.

I enjoyed my introduction to Fenella and Isle of Man. I love that Fenella is an older protagonist and an American. She is still learning about her new hometown and I really enjoyed her daily walks as I could grasp the locale that was new to me as well. The friendly pub full of books and reading nooks made my heart sing. Like Fenella, I could spend a lot of time there.

I found the people she met to be the classic people you meet in a cozy mystery. The quirky friend, the promising romantic interest/s, in the case there are three, and all the people that fill the suspect list. We get to know them well for the first book in the series.

And then we have the ghostly Aunty Mona. That woman is a hoot and a half. Not entirely happy in her current form she is on hand to give Fenella clothing and romantic advice and quick to encourage her to investigate the murder and pushes even harder when Fenella finds another body. Mona does have some insight into the people involved but she seems to disregard the danger her niece could face.

The murder mystery was well-plotted. Fenella does have some bad luck finding not one but two dead bodies very soon after the crime has been committed. She also knows nothing about the suspects but she is a pro at eavesdropping. She is also not very good at putting the clues together and that could have her running for her life.

Arrivals and Arrests is a lighthearted mystery with an exciting climax. I enjoyed the way Ms. Xarissa told this story so I am looking forward to reading book two, Boats and Bad Guys to see what kind of mystery Fenella gets involved in next. This being an alphabet series it appears Fenella has all kinds of adventures ahead and I have a bunch of catching up to do.

Murder in the Badlands – Ghost & the Camper Kooky Mystery by Rita Moreau #Spotlight

Murder in the Badlands – Ghost & the Camper Kooky Mystery
by Rita Moreau++

It is my honor to shine my spotlights on Murder in the Badlands today.
Rita was supposed to drop by for a visit today but sadly she lost her husband earlier this month to cancer.
Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

About Murder in the Badlands

Rita Moreau’s 3rd book in this hilarious series…

More antics as Mabel Gold and her friend — spirit — ghost – whatever you want to call Irma, gets Mabel into yet another mystery. Things can go bad quickly in the Badlands…

Everything about Mabel’s golden years has been a surprise. The divorce, Irma the ghost haunting her vintage camper, dead guys whose murders Mabel must help Irma solve every stop of the way.

Mabel and her ghostly roommate Irma, along with friend Lili and her retired homicide detective husband Bob, have made it to the Badlands. From the get-go, they were smack dab in the middle of another murder.

Ralph, an old Marine buddy asks Bob, to investigate the death of his son Danny. His death has been ruled an accident. Ralph didn’t agree. He’s sure his son was pushed off top of Mount Rushmore. Right near the Hall of Records, or as it’s called in the movies and YouTube, the Secret Chamber. But why?

Did Danny, a skilled rock climber and much sought-after guide, find long-lost gold?

Were Danny’s last words–those of Crazy Horse–Hokahey–it’s a good day to die–leave a clue as to his demise?

Will Irma run out of costumes from her ghostly cyberspace closet before they solve the murder?

Will Irma’s new friend Poker Alice–the wild west’s famous gambler and brothel owner help Mabel and Irma figure out what happened to Danny?

And what about Cindy Lou and her side-kick Top Gun Colonel Clark–did they have a secret that Danny uncovered that fatal night outside the Secret Chamber?

Can Mabel and Irma catch the killer before Mabel joins Irma crashing through the Pearly Gates?

Murder in the Badlands is the high spirited third book in the hilarious Ghost & the Camper Kooky Mystery series. If you like golden girl sleuths, zany characters, and sardonic humor, then you’ll love this kooky mystery. Hoping you like camping!

Great Escapes Praise for Murder in the Badlands – Ghost & the Camper Kooky Mystery
by Rita Moreau

A wonderful cast of characters and interesting living and sleeping arrangements populate this hilarious series. There may be some other sort of paranormal activity developing.
I don’t want to give too much away, but even as they figure out pieces of the puzzle, overall things become more complicated and entangled.
It has my attention captured and I can’t wait to see in what new directions this “summer trip” takes us.
~Laura’s Interests

This is the first book I’ve read in the series, but the author includes a short intro at the start so you can dive right in. There is a large cast of characters that are sometimes hard to keep straight. All in all, I found the book to be a good read!
~Nellie’s Book Nook

A fabulously fun series full of quirky witty characters, new locations every time, and plenty of humor mixed in with their adventures. A must-read. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
~Books a Plenty Book Reviews

Well-written and the pace is steady. There’s enough description to get a feel for the Badlands without slowing down the pace. Although part of a series, this can be read as a stand-alone. I’m looking forward to Mabel’s next adventure.
