This series was introduced with the novella Color Me Bad, which was a perfect escape. You can read my review here.
The character getting a fresh start in this story is LilyAnn Bronte. She was on top off the world, honor student, cheerleader, Peachy – Keen Queen and engaged to marry her high school sweetheart. Then her fiance enlisted in the military and was killed in Iraq. She lost her zest for life, became withdrawn and gained some weight. When a new guy comes to Blessings, she decides that now may be the time to get her life back on track. But will she discover that her new love was already in town and was just waiting for her to realize it?
Dollycas’s Thoughts
I normally read mysteries but I love to add books like this to the mix. The Curl Up and Dye was such a fun read once I started reading I just could stop.
LilyAnn just stopped really living her life for 11 years after her finance was killed. She lived in her childhood home left to her by her parents, stayed working at the same local drugstore, and she never finished college. Her friends moved on and most of them away. The only thing she treated herself to was a weekly hair appointment at The Curl Up and Dye. Ruby, the owner and Vera and Vesta, the other stylists wished there was something they could do to help her. Then Ruby had an idea….
This book is not your typical romance novel. It is jammed packed with humor and sensitivity. It has been labeled as Wally Lamb meets Steel Magnolias and that sure fits. A beauty shop anywhere is the place for gossip and The Curl Up and Dye is no exception.
I just love the expression “Bless her heart” and knowing its true Southern meaning. But it is lines like this that really had me smiling.
“Dang girl, you’re not nearly as big as you were the last time we were here.”
“Eddie Gleason! I can’t believe that just came out of your mouth. I’m sorry LilyAnn. I have yet to meet a man who could breathe and make sense at the same time…”
This story was a breath of fresh air and I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. Blessings, Georgia is a special place full of good people and Southern charm. I hope I get to visit there again real soon!!
