FOUL PLAY IN THE GYM
When it comes to running a successful garage sale, Sarah Winston believes in doing her homework. She also believes in giving back. But when she agrees to manage an athletic equipment swap, she doesn’t bargain on an uncharitable killer. The day of the event, the school superintendent is found dead in the gymnasium.

HAS SARAH PLAYING DEFENSE
Suddenly the murder suspects are the school board members—including the husband of a very difficult client who’s hired Sarah to run a high-end sale and demands she do her bidding. In between tagging and haggling, Sarah studies the clues to see who wanted to teach the superintendent a lesson. But as she closes in on the truth, the killer intends to give her a crash course on minding her own business . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Happy Dance! I am all caught up on this series!

Sarah has taken on the schools athletic swap meet. Who knew arranging bats, balls, and hockey sticks could be such a huge undertaking and dangerous too. The night before the event Sarah is working late when she is attacked and several items, including the expensive silent auction items, are stolen. The following day is even worse when Sarah finds the school superintendent has been killed. The murder has to be someone involved at the school, maybe even someone on the school board. Can Sarah find the killer before the police? Maybe she can ask a few questions while organizing and running a garage sale for a wife of one of the board members. Or maybe she should just stay out of it . . . like that would ever happen 🙂

Sarah Winston is a such a great character. She has become an expert at garage sales, thrift stores, swap meets, and online buy and sell sites. I wish I had half her knowledge and energy. She has also become quite adept at solving murder mysteries. People open up to her in a way they never open up to police. She also has no problem asking for help from Mike ‘the Big Cheese’ Titone, but she just may be pushing him a little too far. Her romantic life has had been in flux since this series started and I still have hope that she will end up with the man I have been rooted for.

Solving the murder and the thefts has Sarah running all over the place and not thinking about the danger she is putting herself in. She is warned several times, but her independence makes her act without thinking the situation through. The author takes us on a journey as Sarah uncovers more secrets and lies. A couple of corkscrew twists really has my eyes glued to the pages.

In addition to the main mystery, there is a subplot that had me almost rolling on the floor laughing. All I can say is lasagna! The lengths Sarah goes to for her friends was not only funny but heartwarming and made me very hungry. Guess what we had for supper the night after I finished this book.

I love the way Sherry Harris writes. She describes everything in such a way that it is like watching a movie. Her characters feel like old friends, you want to get involved in their lives. She plots the story so well with perfect amounts of suspense and humor. She draws us in and holds our attention making it almost impossible to take a break from the story for food or sleep. Her worldbuilding is excellent.

I have enjoyed this entire series and highly recommend them all.

HER BROTHER IS NO BARGAIN
When Sarah Winston’s estranged brother Luke shows up on her doorstep, asking her not to tell anyone he’s in town—especially her ex, the chief of police—the timing is strange, to say the least. Hours earlier, Sarah’s latest garage sale was taped off as a crime scene following the discovery of a murdered Vietnam vet and his gravely injured wife—her clients, the Spencers.

BUT IS HE A KILLER?
All Luke will tell Sarah is that he’s undercover, investigating a story. Before she can learn more, he vanishes as suddenly as he appeared. Rummaging through his things for a clue to his whereabouts, Sarah comes upon a list of veterans and realizes that to find her brother, she’ll have to figure out who killed Mr. Spencer. And all without telling her ex . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sarah Winston is helping the Spencers, a Vietnam vet and his wife, downsize with a garage sale. The sale is going well until the couple is found in a closed off area in the garage. The husband is dead but the wife is hanging on. Sarah is beside herself, how could this happen at one of her sales? Especially with so many people around. To her, that means plenty of suspects.

She is also surprised when her brother knocks on her door. She hasn’t seen him in years. He says he is working undercover on a story and begs her to keep his visit a secret. Even from her ex, who she is dating again and is around all the time. She discovers some of his notes, a list of veterans. Could his investigation have something to do with what happened at the garage sale? She is definitely going to find out.

I read this book all in one afternoon. The action started early and I just couldn’t put it down.

I was intrigued by the introduction of Sarah’s brother Luke. Had he crossed over to the dark side? Had his years in the service changed him. I went back and forth about him the entire story.

Sarah, now dating only C. J. but Seth is waiting in the wings really had her hands full. She is trying to solve the murder, trying to find out what her brother is up to, trying to help the Spencer’s son sell the things that were left over when the sale abruptly ended and trying to move her relationship with C.J. in the right direction. There were many nights she was exhausted and for good reason. All these characters are complex, real and entertaining. I am probably the only one but I am still on Team Seth.

The story has many layers and is very well plotted. Twist and turns and plenty of action kept the pages turning rapidly. The mystery centered on a topic I had never really given a lot of thought and I learned something. That always makes a story better.

I do enjoy Ms. Harris’ writing style. Her books are very easy to escape right into leaving the stressors of real life behind. A quick pace, plenty of suspects and a very entertaining mystery make this a good day to buy, A Good Day To Buy. 🙂

There is a cliffhanger at the end of this one. In a way, I am glad I was late to the party for this series because I don’t have to wait a year for the next book. I Know What You Bid Last Summer will be out February 27.

Her Next Sale

When Sarah Winston started the virtual garage sale, it seemed like a keystroke of genius and the next logical step in her business. No more collapsing card tables and rainy-day washouts. But what began as a fun way to run garage sales during the long New England winter has become a nightmare of managing people and putting out fires. Online, she can avoid the crowds–but not the crazies.

May Be Her Last

She certainly never bargained on dealing with frightening threats. And when a client is murdered, it’s time for Sarah to swallow her pride and seek the help of her ex–C.J. Hooker, chief of police. Forging a tense alliance, they search–online and off–for the killer. But solving this crime before someone else gets tagged seems virtually impossible…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sarah Winston sees virtual garage sales as a way to keep her business flourishing during the winter months but she never imagined they could lead to murder. There are some crazy people online so to join her garage sale group you have to be added by someone already a member. Should be safe right? Nope, the crazies get in and one of her clients ends up dead.  At loose ends about both the murder and her love life, she ends of working with both her ex, the man she is also dating, and a very interesting next door neighbor to put the real killer in the slammer.

I am loving this series and I love that this one takes place during the winter months because it shows Sarah can get creative to keep her business growing. The author also continues to include the Air Force connection running throughout the series. Sarah has friends on and off the base allowing her to be part of both worlds. Her ex-husband is out of the military and now the police chief of Ellington. With each murder, the couple struggles with their relationship. She is also dating the local district attorney. Her friends have their opinions on who she should be with and so do I. 🙂 Not much of a cook, Sarah spends a lot of time at DiNapoli’s restaurant, she is like family to the Italian owners. I get a warm feeling whenever they sit down to share a meal and a little wine. Her landlord and downstairs neighbor and Carol owner of the Paint and Wine are also 2 constants in her new non-military life.

The main plot is complex. It seems to be tied to Sarah’s virtual garage sales but it takes time to find all the connections. Sarah also learns she has a stalker and that is scary because she doesn’t know if they are the murderer or if this has no connection to the case. I loved the way one part of the mystery was solved, but as the last part was falling into place I felt like when I watch a scary movie and you are peering through your fingers shouting “DON’T GO IN THERE!!” Thank you, Ms. Harris, my pulse was racing!

I have really enjoyed the first 3 books in this series. Each one tops the one before. I am excited for book 4, A Good Day to Buy and book 5, I Know What You Bid Last Summer when it makes its debut on February 27!

ONE MAN’S CLUTTER

When Sarah Winston turns Ellington, Massachusetts, into New England’s largest garage sale for a day, it’s the small town’s biggest event since the start of the Revolutionary War—but without the bloodshed. That is, until a valuable painting goes missing…and the lifeless body of an Air Force officer is found in Carol Carson’s painting studio, his face perfectly framed with the murder weapon—a metal picture frame.

IS ANOTHER MAN’S CLOVER

Sarah is mad as heck that someone used her town-wide garage sale to commit a crime—and frame her good friend Carol. She is definitely on this case…but it’s not easy rummaging through increasingly strange clues that point to cheating spouses, downright dirty investment schemes—even the mob. And Sarah will have to be very careful if she wants to live to bargain another day…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Book #2 of this series has Sarah Winston organizing a huge garage sale, the largest in New England. The day arrives with crowds of people, traffic jams, happy customers, and a very happy town manager. The tourists would come for the sale and spend money and then she hoped would come back again and again. But then, a man is found murdered at the Paint and Wine studio and a painting is missing. Then another valuable painting is stolen from the library.  Sarah’s ex, C. J. Hooker is ready to pin the crimes on Carol Carson, the owner of the studio and Sarah’s friend. With the town’s garage sale over Sarah has some time on her hands and she is going to use it bag the real culprit. The clues have her chasing all over town and the Air Force base. She may solve more than one mystery before she wraps up her investigation.

I love Sarah Winston. Between her garage sale business, dating two men, her ex, and Seth, the local district attorney, and volunteering a the base thrift store, she is one busy woman. But she uses all of it to try to catch a killer. People open up to her very easily and she can do a little snooping under the guise of garage sale business. Her friends are great sources too. She also has no problem asking C.J. and Seth for information either. Every character that the author has created comes off realistically. They have grown since the first book. I enjoyed getting to know all of them a little better.

The mystery this time has several tangents with twists galore. The story starts a little slow but then the pace picks up as more clues are revealed and the motive becomes more clear. There is a lot of ground covered in this story, but by the end, the plot and subplots come together nicely with just a little romantic cliffhanger that has me excited to read book #3.

I love the author’s writing style, the way she shares life on an Air Force Base and it’s neighboring town. The way she picks up that Boston accent and the way real people talk. The dialogue in this story is excellent. Her descriptions of time and place clearly enabled me to picture everything that was happening. The mystery was well plotted and real life was portrayed honestly. The romance was depicted well and made me laugh more than a few times.

I am late to the party for this series but hope to catch up before I Know What You Bid Last Summer comes out at the end of February.

Starting your life over at age thirty-eight isn’t easy, but that’s what Sarah Winston finds herself facing when her husband CJ runs off with a 19-year-old temptress named Tiffany. Sarah’s self-prescribed therapy happily involves hitting all the garage and tag sales in and around her small town of Ellington, Massachusetts. If only she could turn her love for bargain hunting into a full-time career.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure

But after returning from a particularly successful day searching for yard sale treasures, Sarah finds a grisly surprise in one of her bags: a freshly bloodied shirt. . .that undoubtedly belongs to her ex, CJ, who now happens to be Ellington’s chief of police. If that’s not bad enough, it seems Tiffany has gone missing. Now it’s up to Sarah to prove that her cold-hearted ex is not a cold-blooded killer. . .

But finding that treasure can be murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sarah Winston may be starting her life over after her husband, CJ cheated on her but she is still connected to several places and people from before her divorce. She stills spends time on the Fitch Air Force Base working at the thrift store. A perfect job because she loves hunting for bargains at garage sales and she donates several of her finds to the store. But one of her recent bargains, a bag of clothes, included a bloody shirt and she recognizes it. It is belongs to her ex, the new chief of police of Ellington. His “girlfriend” also happens to be missing and more blood has been found in her dorm room.  The investigation includes the security at the base too and CJ is their prime suspect. As mad as she is at CJ, Sarah knows he is not a killer and she is going to prove it.

What a fantastic story and introduction to these characters. You can tell the author is drawing from personal experiences, sans the murder/s of course 🙂

Sarah comes across as so genuine and I loved her almost obsession with garage sales. It is all about the negotiating and the deal she can get. When she took her friend with her and tried to teach her “the art of the deal”, it was hilarious. That friend could have been me. All the characters grew over the course of the story and there is so much more room for them to grow in this series.

The plot is very strong and filled with surprising twists. The connection to the Air Force Base was very appealing and the details of the workings of such a place was appreciated by this reader. I enjoyed solving the mystery right along with Sarah.

The garage sale tips were a nice addition and food for thought.

I am super exited to get caught up on this series.

Earlier today I reviewed a book inspired by Walt Whitman, where Edgar Allan Poe made a cameo appearance. Now let me share this book of short stories with you inspired my Edgar Allan Poe.

edgar allan cozy
Edgar Allan Cozy: Wicked Short Stories
Cozy Anthology
Setting – Maine

Print Length: 55 pages
Wicked Cozy Press (January 16, 2016)
ASIN: B01AQ77TBY
goodreads-badge-add-plus

When cozy mystery writers meet Edgar Allan Poe, the result is Edgar Allan Cozy. Each story in this suspenseful new anthology is inspired by the work of Poe. “The Raven,” “The Lighthouse,” “MS. Found in a Bottle,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” and “Annabel Lee” have been updated and set in the fictional town of Raven Harbor, Maine.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

As soon as I heard about this collection I was so excited to read it. A modern spin on classic Poe, sign me up!

The book starts with a wonderful introduction of how these poems and stories can to be. They all take place in Raven Harbor, Maine. It was fun to have the stories all tie together in the same setting.

First up Barbara modern take on The Raven. I loved it!!!

Next Sherry Harris gives us The Lighthouse, a story where Madeline Wilson tries to find out what happened to her great-great-great grandfather, Barnabas, all those years ago. The residents seem to know the story but are pretty tight lipped. It has a nice twist that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Then Sheila Connolly gives us Found in a Bottle. This is a dark tale. A story were a romantic weekend turns into a true mystery. The romance of the story quickly fizzles but what continues is very interesting.

An Intolerable Intrusion by Edith Maxwell comes next. She gives us her modern twist on A Tell-Tale Heart. This was an entertaining read and if I was forced to choose my favorite I would have to pick this one.

Sadie Hartwell’s Within These Walls is next. What do you do when your husband cheats? This story has an intriguing idea. I knew where it was going but I loved it none the less.

The book wraps us with Anna, Belle and Lee by Sherry Harris. She has crafted quite a poem of a twisted love triangle.

Whether you are a fan of Poe or not, I know you will enjoy this little collection. It was a nice mini escape at only 55 pages. It will also be a keeper to be read again and again.

perfect 2016
