A Life with Character
by Gianetta Murray
“Geoffrey is me,” my current husband tells all and sundry, referring to the suave, near-perfect spouse of my protagonist in the Vivien Brandt Mysteries.
Too be clear, Geoffrey is not him. Not even close. But just in case he wants to continue this fantasy, I’ve made Geoffrey less perfect in the second Vivien Brandt book, Dug to Death. We’ll see how long he wants to continue to claim a resemblance.
As authors, we often get asked whether we’ve based our characters on real people, and it’s a question I think many of us would rather avoid. Admitting your killer is the spitting image of your bigoted uncle is going to lead to some uncomfortable conversations at Thanksgiving dinner.
I will admit, however, that I’ve given Vivien some of my most egregious faults, like failing to understand the rhythm of British conversation when she first moves to England from her California home in Moved to Murder and speaking her mind without considering the consequences. I’m a fan of writing what you know.
But Vivien is not formulated solely on my experience. I had discussions with my expat acquaintances to find the most common problems they encountered when moving to the UK, and I tried to adapt the most amusing or heartbreaking ones. And some characters evolved as part of the writing. (One of the biggest surprises to me when I started writing was finding that your characters do indeed begin to speak to you with their own voices.)
I keep detailed descriptions of all my characters—not only to ensure I get their eye color right, but to track their issues, strengths, and development. Because no one wants to read a murder mystery where they don’t care about the people involved, and that means making them relatable, including foibles and missteps as well as cheering their good qualities and their ability to improve.
How do you know if your characters feel true? That’s where your ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) readers, editors, and reviewers come in. And you have to be ready for the fact that you won’t please everyone.
For example, my first online Waterstone’s reviewer said they didn’t like anyone in the book except for the neighbor Hayley, and more than one ARC reader said they wanted more of Fred, the irascible ex-miner that I didn’t like at all! Now, I wasn’t going to change every character to be more likable, but I curbed some of Vivien’s annoying habits, brought a little more complexity to Hayley’s character and a (very) few more likeable aspects to Fred’s, and found it made them more well-rounded and realistic while staying true to my vision of who they are and their purpose in the story.
This is part of the joy of writing: growing and changing with your characters, discovering more about them and about yourself in the process. In addition to Vivien, I’ve found aspects of myself in Tabitha the Wiccan, Clive the minister, and especially Sydney the cat. I’m very clear now on the ways Geoffrey is not like my husband, and that’s a good thing since I’m writing fiction, not memoir.
My goal is to give my readers plenty they can relate to, but to avoid caricatures of good and evil, because life is rarely one or the other.
I trust this will put my ex-husband’s fears to rest. 😉
Thank you so much, Gianetta, for visiting today!

“Wicked stepmother” wasn’t something Vivien wanted on her resume (or CV!).
But six months after moving from California to join her British husband in a quiet Yorkshire village, Vivien and her cat Sydney are confronted with a volatile 24-year-old stepdaughter and the sparks begin to fly.
It certainly doesn’t help when they join a local protest and a body turns up.
In this sequel to Moved to Murder, Vivien must once again work with her enterprising neighbors to solve a murder and clear her family’s name. Which isn’t easy when you’re dealing with people who “Ear all, see all, and say nowt”!
