HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Print vs. Digital

For Christmas, I treated myself to a Kindle Paperwhite. The battery lasts so much longer than my Kindle Fire. I was getting so frustrated when I was deep into a book and the dreaded only 10% battery life left message popped up. Of course, I was also using it to check Facebook, Twitter and play games. The Paperwhite is designed solely for reading and I love it. I was nervous about it’s smaller size, but it about the same size as a mass market paperback, fits well in my good hand, and the font size can be adjusted by many more levels than the Kindle Fire. The sale they had before Christmas also played into my purchase.

BUT, there are a few pitfalls. Like people messaging me on Facebook in the evenings when the Fire tablet is stowed away in my bedside table, meaning I may not see the messages until I am back to my computer in the morning. I am trying to train myself to check it more often.

The biggest pitfall that I noticed is that we are well into February and I have read 27 books and only read 4, yes four, were print books. I was one of the people that when e-readers first came out said I didn’t want one. I liked the feel of a print book in my hands. I committed to only read print books. Then a friend sent me a Kindle as a gift. This was way before they could do the magical things like a tablet. I tried it and I liked it, but I still read mostly print books. Then each year I was reading less and less. Last year, I read 212 books, about half were print. The way I have started this year, that is not going to be the case. I have joined the Print Reading Challenge, challenging myself to read at least 78 print books. I hope I make it.

Part of this caused by publishers sending fewer print copies for review. Most are up on NetGalley which makes it easier for us and less costly for them. Sadly I think it won’t be long until all review books will be offered this way.

Another part is my fault because I buy digital copies of books I want from Amazon because it is cheaper and they magically appear almost instantly. I am a prime member though so if the print price and the Kindle price are close to the same I have started to order a print copy, with free shipping I can wait 2 days for the book to arrive.

A third contributing factor is there are so many books I want to read that are only available in digital format. Many authors I love are self-publishing in this format only because print copies are pricey.

A good thing is that I will be using less storage space in my house for my books. Our Kindles have a huge invisible shelf, with books that stay safe on our Amazon accounts, that be downloaded at any time. No one else can see how many books I am hiding in this wonderful little device.  Maybe I will start to look a little less like a book hoarder. 🙂 but I do still love a beautiful bookcase full of books.

What do you read more of Print or Digital?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Our grandsons are here for the weekend. #1 playing his video games, #2 watching shows and playing games on his Kindle. A little snowball fight with their uncle and a little cooking with their aunt. Popcorn, movies and root beer floats are on the agenda for tonight (Saturday). I love having these boys in the house for lazy weekends like this one. I have been reading and watching the Olympics too.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Climate Change – Wisconsin weather is always interesting, especially in the winter. We can have frigid cold temperatures one day followed by spring-like temperatures the next, rain, snow, and sunshine all in one day. I remember as a child the huge drifts of snow as high as houses and huge blizzards. These days those seem to be few and far between. I know the weather we have had this year has snowmobilers and skiers very unhappy. Even going north doesn’t have the winter playground of years gone by. Earlier this week all the snow was melted and this morning when I woke up (Saturday) it was lightly snowing and that has continued all day. It is very pretty but then again I don’t have to drive in it 🙂

The colder weather has frozen the lakes and ponds and last night grandson #2 and his mom went ice skating. His first time and he loved it, even the falling down part. Made me remember all the times we took her and her siblings skating when they were that age. They didn’t have the walker type thing he was able to use to get comfortable on the ice. All I know is he had a great time and can’t wait to go again and maybe try hockey skates.

Has your weather been crazy this year too?

Note – I woke up Sunday morning to find the nice little snow of yesterday left us with several inches overnight.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Daughter #2 and I started our week Sunday night live tweeting during the new Hallmark Mystery movie, Mortal Mishaps. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed the movie very much.  After that it was a pretty quiet week around here. She was home sick with the flu all week. I had bouts of it on and off all week but nothing close to what she was going through. She is feeling better now and excited to go back to work tomorrow. We can both only take so much mother/daughter togetherness 🙂 We both read some good books and watched too much television while I kept on top of blog stuff and book tours. I did review the first books in 3 new cozy series this week! Tomorrow we will return to life as normal with hopefully no relapses.

How was your week?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Losing a family pet is always hard. This week my favorite feline passed away after giving us almost 13 years of love and enjoyment. Wiley was just a kitten when found at a gas station near one of the pumps trying to avoid a thunderstorm. We had recently lost another cat to old age so the person knew we had a hole to fill. He thrived in our care and grew to be a pretty big cat with the curly tail. He was vocal and funny and knew when someone needed attention. He reminded me of Diesel, the cat in Miranda James Cat in the Stacks Mysteries.

When everyone else was a work or school Wiley was my buddy, my “blogging assistant”. He made himself at home on my desk every day. When others arrived home he spread the love around and spent the evenings mostly with our oldest son Kris. When Kris moved out on his own Wiley went along.

When Kris’s daughter was born, Wiley quickly became her cat, and he put up with whatever that little girl dished out.

When Kris passed away in 2015 Wiley moved in with our oldest daughter where he continued to receive excellent care and attention. Her boys were thrilled to have him there with them and I got to visit him often.

I find comfort that he and Kris are back together probably playing video games.  🙂

Wiley was one cool cat and he will be missed.

All gamed out – From Kris’s Facebook post.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

It was a great week. It started with our family Christmas last weekend which included the grandsons sleeping over. They were here until Sunday evening. Santa was so good to all of us. He brought me a Kindle Paperwhite and I love it along with all the other presents I received.

Blog life was busy as usual but Friday I was offered a great opportunity. Watch for my post on Wednesday for the details!

Then Friday night Mr. Dollycas, the kids and I went to see Jeff Dunham’s Passively Aggressive show. I have not laughed that hard in a very long time. If he is performing somewhere near you I highly recommend it.

Jeff Dunham was introduced to all of us by our son Kris, several years ago and we have watched all is television specials several times. Kris happened to use my email to sign up for a mailing list for shows like this, World Wrestling Entertainment, and bands coming to the area. Most are deleted quickly. The one for Jeff Dunham show had a link to order advance tickets. A quick message to my husband and the kids all returned with thumbs up, so I quickly ordered the tickets.  I am so glad we went. I am sure Kris was watching over us and laughing right along with us.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Today holds many feelings. Christmas Eve was my mother’s birthday. I miss her every day. It also marks the start of our 3rd Christmas without our son, Kristopher. I recently found this picture of him. He has dressed up as Santa at work. I would give anything to look into those eyes again and see the true smile under than white beard. The holidays are hard but we know we carry Kris in our hearts and that he is watching over us. I am praying the family get-togethers a just a little easier this year.

There was an important event this past week. Our youngest grandson turned 5. The boy wanted to go bowling, so that’s what we did. Well, I watched. Mr. Dollycas hasn’t bowled for years but he did pretty well with a 181. So did Remi and Kaden.

Daughter #1 was on vacation this week so I was able to go to my youngest grandson’s Christmas concert. That meant about 2 hours travel that day to get me from here, then there, and then me, and then her back home, but I was so happy for the trip. The kids were all so cute. The programs were “autographed” (not copied) by all the students. They sang 9 songs and did an excellent job. Remi was pretty shy that day but the promise of a little ice cream and he gave in to have his picture taken with Nana. Spending time with my daughter made for a perfect day.
