HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Thanksgiving Memories

As we begin this week of Thanksgiving my thoughts turn to my mom. She loved the holidays and getting all of her family around the table. My parents owned a tavern/cafe for 23 years. For many of those years, they lived in the apartment above the business along with me and my grandmother. She had a Duncan Fife table with at least four leaves. It stretched out of the dining room and into the living room. My parents, grandmother, my brother’s family, my sister’s family, and later my family were sometimes joined by my mom’s sister. Dinner was served at 2 p.m. and you had better be at the table ready to eat.  My dad died in 1988, but the tradition continued until my mom sold the business in 1993 and moved to an apartment. We still got together but not around the big long table. The tradition stopped when she went into a nursing home in 2008 and passed away in 2009. All the food was delicious  – all the usual Thanksgiving goodies, but the thing I remember most was the Impossible Pumpkin Pie. When she found that recipe you would have thought she found the Holy Grail. She went on and on about how “it makes its own crust”. Every year she took so much delight in baking that pie. I can still see her bringing the pies to the table with a huge smile on her face.

Of course, every year we always have pumpkin pie but it has been a long time since we have had Impossible Pumpkin Pie. So this year, I dug out my recipe box but the card was pretty tattered so I did an online search to make sure I had everything right and found there are now microwave instructions too. I need to pick up a few ingredients and I think we will stick with oven baking but I will share both with you. (I am sure the recipe is also on the Bisquick container this time of year.)

Impossible Pumpkin Pie

Image from – https://www.bettycrocker.com/

Ingredients

1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
1/2 cup Original Bisquick™ mix
1/2  cup sugar
1 cup evaporated milk
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs

Whipped topping, if desired

Steps
1 Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease 9-inch pie plate.
2 Stir all ingredients except whipped topping until blended. Pour into pie plate.
3 Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 30 minutes. Refrigerate about 3 hours or until chilled. Serve with whipped topping. Store covered in refrigerator.

MICROWAVE: Grease microwavable 10-inch pie plate. Beat all ingredients until smooth, 1 minute in blender on high or 2 minutes with hand beater. Pour into plate. Microwave on inverted microwavable dinner plate on medium-high (70 %), rotating pie plate 1/4 turn every 5 minutes until knife inserted in center comes out clean, 22 to 28 minutes. Cool on flat, heatproof surface (do not cool on wire rack).
High Altitude Directions: (3500 to 6500 feet): Increase microwave time to 26 to 32 minutes.

Happy Baking,

Lori

Tours – Women – Snow – The Grinch

This week was full both on the blog and at home. In addition to my usual blog posts, Great Escapes Book Tours had over 10 tours running, most with more than 1 stop per day. I appreciated that my body did not adjust quickly to the time change because I needed that extra hour each morning to promote all the stops.

Then we had the election on Tuesday and I was impressed by the number of woma\en running and winning. It is time our representatives in Congress represent their constituents better and I think more women at the table is the first step, no matter what party they represent.

Also this week, snow arrived in central Wisconsin. While many people love the snow, I am not one of them. It seems like Autumn lasted only a couple of weeks before Old Man Winter roared in. Hopefully, his stay will be short and he will disappear right after the holidays.

And speaking of the holidays, we loaded up the family trucksters last night and headed to the movie theater to see The Grinch! Great Family Fun! It will become an annual watch!

Pumpkin Hunting

Looking out the window and in the driveway last Sunday it seemed like the perfect day to make a family trip to the pumpkin patch. Many other people had the same idea, the place was packed. But when we arrived there was a real chill to the air and the wind was brutal. It didn’t matter to the grandkids. There was so much for them to do at this farm. All the activities and running around kept them perfectly warm. The adult kids handled it better than Mr. Dollycas and I but we wouldn’t have missed this trip for anything. We didn’t go with them on the hayride to the fields to pick their pumpkins, instead headed into the store to get caramel apples for the grands and apple cider and apple pie to bring home. Even with the wind, you can see we had a good time.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

It’s that time of year when we start working hard to finish up our Reading Challenges and start to plan our challenges for next year. I know I will be hosting the Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge, the Literary Escapes Reading Challenge, and the Craving for Cozies Challenge again. I will be adding the Author Edition of Alphabet Soup Challenge which will use the author’s name instead of the book title.

I have been doing well on most of my challenges this year but I have two I probably won’t complete. I will definitely have traveled to 42 states and 6 places abroad for the Literary Escapes Challenges but may not be able to squeeze in the rest of the destinations. I also overcommitted on the Strictly Print Challenge. I thought I would read as many print as digital books this year but that has not been the case. I love my Kindle Paperwhite and it has been reading much more digitally, plus publishers are moving away even more from sending print copies for review.

Do you participate in Reading Challenges? How are you doing this year? Do you have any ideas for new challenges?

You can see all my challenges and my progress here

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Another year of football is in the books. All the kids played well. We lost yesterday 19 – 21 but they had a winning season and everyone is looking forward to next year. For Kaden and the rest of the 5th graders, next year means the end of flags and really tackling. Should be interesting.  It was windy and chilly but we all had fun supporting the team and cheering for Diesel, aka Kaden. Because there is no school on Monday he came home with us and quickly hooked up with his FortNite friends on the Xbox 🙂 At least he is in the living room so I can see him having fun.  Yeah, he is at the age where grandparents just smile and nod and try to grab a hug whenever we can. I stole several Remington hugs earlier today because he will be spending his no school Monday with his other grandma. Natalie was at the pumpkin patch today with her other set of grandparents. Pumpkins – they are on my agenda for next weekend.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

My week started out great when the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the National League Central Division and are in the playoffs! Mr. Dollycas was so happy.

Then that evening we celebrated my BFF’S birthday with a surprise party here in Wisconsin. We had so much fun but the evening passed too quickly and they headed back to Kentucky early the next morning. I hope they can break away and head our way again soon.

The week then kind of went downhill as I was caught up in all the political debauchery. I was ready to move on when Kaden arrived Friday evening so we could take him to his game yesterday. The rain passed over and the game was played but the field they played on was unreachable for me and my wheelchair. The ground was too wet and the gravel/dirt road was filled with huge puddles. Mr. Dollycas and Daughter #2 made the trek and witnessed Kaden have a great game, 3 Sacks! The game ended tied 13 – 13. While disappointed at missing the game, I did have my Kindle with me and finished one book and started another 🙂 Next week is the last game for the year and I know I can get to that field. I can hardly wait!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Summer tv is over and I was thrilled that Kaycee won Big Brother. Now the new television season has begun. I love the new Chicago Wednesdays with Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD, all on one night. I am excited about The Good Doctor, The Voice, Law & Order SVU, Grey’s Anatomy, This Is Us, and Blue Bloods too. I did DVR two new shows as well, New Amsterdam and Manifest. I also DVR How to Get Away With Murder but save those for binge watching. Good thing I can read and watch television or at least read during the commercials.

Miss Natalie arrived Friday evening and she traveled with us to Kaden’s away game on Saturday. It was a chilly day, about 48 degrees. I am just not ready for those temps. A t-shirt, sweater, and hoodie kept the top half of me warm, I am going to have a blanket if the weather sticks around for the last two weeks of games. Our team won again 20 – 6. Today, I hope to stay indoors with a good book as soon as I get my computer work done, maybe watch the Packer game too.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Yesterday was a very busy day. We had the Walk for Hope in the morning. Kaden had football in the afternoon. After a quick stop at the outlet mall, Mr. Dollycas, Daughter #2, Kaden and I took Daughter #1 for a birthday dinner a few days early.

Natalie made a special poster for her daddy.
The posters lined the track as we walked.

As the names of the people lost to suicide that were represented by family and friends at this small county walk were read aloud I was just struck that there were just too many names. Too many lives lost. The purpose of the walk was clear. We cannot bring our loved ones back but we can do our damnest to raise awareness so the lists in the future get shorter.

Thank you to everyone that has walked, donated money, and have spoken out to help the quest to #StopSuicide. September is National Suicide Awareness Month but suicide happens too many times each day the whole year round. Be open, listen carefully, and give support. Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you.

Oh, and Kaden’s team won 18 -6. 🙂 His mom celebrated her 29th birthday again. 🙂

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Every day is a hard day without my son Kristopher, but March, December, and September are the hardest months. March because he was born and died in March. December because of the holidays and all that goes with them. September because it is Suicide Prevention Month. This past week was Suicide Prevention Week. I only posted about it here on my blog one time this year, until today. This past week I shared information on Facebook, Twitter, and Google + each day. I wrote a little post for our church bulletin, and I cried a lot.

Yesterday marked 42 months since Kris’ death, but I swear the grief can come up and smack you in the face at any time. It always feels like he was here just yesterday or last week. Then I look at his daughter, now 6, and all the days without him came rushing back. What also comes rushing back is how important Suicide Prevention and Awareness is.

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.

Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. There are many ways to help.

Awareness needs to be raised about the help available. The stigma about suicide and thoughts of suicide needs to be removed. Use your voice and social media to speak out and raise awareness.

You can volunteer at local chapters and contact your political representatives and lobby for a more open conversation about Mental Health. Mental Health needs to be treated by insurance carriers like any other illness.

September is designated as Suicide Prevention Month but it needs to be in the conversation 365 days a year because suicide doesn’t take a day off. On average there are 123 suicides every day in the U.S. almost 45,000 a year.

Okay, I am getting off my soapbox. You can see this cause is very important to me. If your lives have been touched by suicide you know the pain. The pain that has left our loved one and transferred to us. Reach Out – Listen Closely – Let Them Know You Care. Don’t be afraid to ask them if they are thinking about suicide. Don’t leave them alone. Encourage them to seek help.

If you are in crisis, or with someone in a crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

See my post here for more information and information on how to donate to the Walk for Hope on September 22.

Thank you!
