Julia Bonatti wasn’t always a crime-solving San Francisco astrologer. She was a young woman, engaged to the love of her life, preparing for a teaching career when tragedy struck. Her fiancé was killed in a hit and run accident. As Julia struggles with her loss and attempts to find meaning in her life again, she takes refuge with her grandmother Gloria. But there’s little time for grief or rest because Gloria, a retired seamstress, needs Julia’s help. Gloria’s been hired to create costumes for a production of Agatha Christie’s Appointment with Death at the newly opened Theatre Mars in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.
Theatre Mars is a stunning jewel, the cast is supremely talented and the script is brilliant. What could go wrong? Julia gets the first hint of trouble when her new friend, the owner of The Mystic Eye bookshop, warns that all might not go well. Opening night will take place during the dark of the moon, the last three days before the new moon, a time that bodes disaster for any new project. The dire prediction comes true when the lead actress is murdered before the final curtain, echoing the play itself. Julia discovers a vital clue to the murder, but a clue that puts Gloria’s life in grave danger. Can Julia rescue her grandmother before it’s too late? And will a black cat play a leading role?

I enjoyed meeting Gale and discovering how she decided to set up a mystic shop. I find that whole world very fascinating. If you haven’t read any of this series, or even if you have, definitely check out this prequel to learn a bit more about Julie; Gale; Julie’s grandmother, Gloria; and Kuan, her grandmother’s tenant.

San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti never thought murder would be part of her practice. But when a disastrous Mercury retrograde period hits, her life and practice is turned upside down, along with that of many of her colleagues who practice in the city. San Francisco has fallen under the spell of the Prophet’s Tabernacle, a religious cult that has descended upon the city. Reverend Roy, a Mercury-ruled, silver-tongued preacher offers a message of love and charity to the less fortunate, but Julia soon learns that the Reverend’s charity doesn’t extend to anyone who stands in his way. The Reverend is waging war on sin as he perceives it, targeting psychics, Wiccans, mediums, astrologers, gays, and anyone else he considers an abomination unto the Lord.
Driven from her apartment, Julia seeks shelter with her client and friend, Dorothy. Dorothy has separated from her spouse and is caring for her two elderly aunts at their home on Telegraph Hill. Dorothy’s aunt, Evandra, appears stricken with dementia and her other aunt, Eunice, has fallen under the spell of the Reverend Roy. When Eunice disappears, Julia’s sure that she is headed for Prophet’s Paradise, a supposedly idyllic community north of the city. Julia fears that Eunice is being misled and will be in danger. She determines to rescue Eunice and take on the Army of the Prophet.
Julia learns once more what she already knew –that Mercury wasn’t just the messenger of the gods, he was a trickster and a liar as well.

#Review – Second Honeymoons Can Be Murder by Susan Santangelo
Second Honeymoons Can Be Murder
(A Baby Boomer Mystery)Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Setting – Florida
Suspense Publishing (February 16, 2016)
Paperback: 226 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0692530528
E-Book ASIN: B019NW2ITG
Carol Andrews can’t believe her luck when her husband, Jim, surprises her with a second honeymoon trip to Florida. But there’s a catch—it’s really a business trip, not the romantic getaway Carol expects. Jim’s been called out of retirement to create a marketing plan for a new television game show aimed at Baby Boomers, The Second Honeymoon Game, and the pilot episode will be shot in the Sunshine State. The honeymoon is really over when the show’s executive producer, none other than Carol’s grammar school boyfriend, winds up dead on Carol and Jim’s first night in Florida. And their son, Mike, is the police’s number one suspect.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
We have gotten to know Carol and Jim Andrews pretty well with this being the 6th book in the series. I love the way Carol tells us the story and the way she talks to her dogs but also directly to the reader. It makes her more realistic. She is still her over-the-top self and just when I was starting to like her “beloved” husband Jim, he was back to his old self in this story, leaving Carol out of things and putting her off when she wanted to talk about their son Mike, who they don’t see often because he lives in Florida. I know it was a business trip, but it was also to be a second honeymoon for them. Everything changed when a the producer dies, but I think even without the dead body Jim would have been in full on work mode, definitely not thinking honeymoon in any way shape or form.
I was sailing through this book and really enjoying it, until yet again suicide becomes a topic. I reviewed a book last week that also triggered my grief a bit but was able to skim that minor part and continue to enjoy the story. This time is was a pivotal part to the story. It really was close to what our family went through and something I hope and pray the future doesn’t hold for us or anyone who loses a child to suicide goes through. I pushed on and finished the story but it was with a lot of tears.
Now if you are not facing a situation like I am, you would enjoy this story because Carol and Jim are quite a couple and some of their antics will have you laughing out loud. If you are a “baby boomer”, you will enjoy it even more. Susan Santangelo writes great stories full of wit and following Carol and her friends as they “investigate” never has a dull moment.
