Emily Hildebrandt has an offer that might be too good to pass up, but The Redemption Detective Agency has a new case that has to come first. One of Tilde’s friends, Amelia Clark, has been traveling and has not been able to reach her niece, Brandy, who is house-sitting for her. Amelia is especially worried about her roses. It seems like it should be a quick matter of tracking Brandy down, but this is Redemption, Wisconsin, “a strange little haunted town where all sorts of odd things happen.” When the “detectives” arrive at the address, an exclusive health club is sitting where Amelia’s house should be. The roses, however, are still there. Clearly, this investigation is going to be more complicated than Emily expected, and her big decision will have to wait.
Tilde thought opening a detective agency was a wonderful idea, and her friends Nora and Mildred were fully on board. None of them had any real investigative experience, but they could turn any topic into a lively gossip session. Thankfully, Tilde’s niece Emily needed a job and stepped in to help manage the seniors, though she may be ready to move on. Her aunt refuses to charge clients, so Emily’s paycheck comes from Tilde’s private funds. Now Emily has a new opportunity, one that better fits her skills and would add solid experience to her résumé. Still, can she really leave Tilde, Mildred, and Nora to their own devices? To make matters more complicated, Nick Stewart, the agency’s unofficial lawyer, has laid on a serious guilt trip, though he may have motives of his own. The character interactions, along with Emily’s inner debates, add real depth and warmth to the story.
What a mystery the author has delivered this time. Amelia, known as Meli, has been away for a while, so discovering that her house is missing is devastating—and that is only the start of the trauma and drama ahead. Don’t let the novella length fool you. Michele Pariza Wacek knows how to pack her pages with a solid mystery, quirky characters, and lives that are anything but boring. Emily is especially good at following the clues and asking the right questions to keep the case moving. With plenty of twists, surprises, and just the right amount of craziness, readers are taken on a fun and emotional ride.
Redemption is a town made for mysterious happenings, and The Mysterious Case of the Missing House is another great example of why this series is so easy to enjoy. Tilde, Nora, and Mildred are hilarious, heartwarming, and just unpredictable enough to keep things interesting. Emily and Nick have romantic tension you can practically feel, even though Emily is dating Jeremy. Add in Emily’s yellow lab, Scout, and Nora’s cat, Smoke, and you have a wonderful found family that pulls you in from the first page and keeps you invested to the very end.
Stay tuned. The Mysterious Case of the Missing Grave will be released on March 30, 2027! It sounds like it is going to be a doozy!

The Mysterious Case of the Missing House would be a good next read for fans of eccentric characters, 90s romcoms, Sarah Addison Allen, and Jann Franklin. The mystery is equal parts delightfully absurd and intriguing (a missing house + a missing niece), and I couldn’t wait to see how it all turned out.
