Inspiration
by Terry Korth Fischer

Flannery O’Connor claims that those who survive to the age of fifteen have enough material to write stories for the rest of their lives. Yet, a frequent question I get at workshops is, how do I come up with story ideas. Comments usually start with, “If I write from experience, I have nothing to write about; my life is boring.” Or ordinary, or dull, or average… Yet, none of us live dull lives. Every day combines physical activity, amazing people, complex situations, and fleeting fears. Take any one of these, and you have the makings for a story. As author Orson Scott said, “Everybody walks past a thousand story ideas every day. The good writers are the ones who see five or six of them. Most people don’t see any.”

So, you aren’t a mass murderer, internet influencer, or brothel madam; you are a complicated person with plenty to draw on when drafting a story. But, just in case you don’t know, what you know, here is a list of five advantages you start with when you sit down with an idea.

    • Intellect. You can learn. You use your intelligence to pick up knowledge in classes, daily life, books, and conversations with friends or mentors. You are continually trying to figure out what life is all about. Did you discover something new today? Something that led you to seek more information, ask questions, and feel amazed? Include that curiosity in your writing.
    • Intentions, willpower, and dreams. Your life is an unfolding adventure. You direct your efforts, focus your thoughts, and get where you want to go—or try to. Give these traits to your characters. Recall the determination you summoned to finish a job, win an award, or solve a puzzle? Or desiring something so badly it hurt? Your characters, too, need goals.
    • Emotions. You express a range of feelings. You’re not only serious, motivated, and eager, but sometimes silly, fierce, generous, sad, optimistic, and stubborn. And more often than not, you experience many of these feelings simultaneously. So, you know how they feel, what they do to your voice and body. Remember how you felt in the waiting room before taking the dentist’s chair? Or sitting in the dark waiting for electricity to be restored? The tingle of a kiss?
    • Experience. Memories of significant events color the present. Your experiences have expanded your knowledge and widened your perspective. Personal history shapes a unique point of view. Where did you attend grade school? Where were you when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, or Hurricane Harvey hit? The journey from birth to now shapes your stories and makes them uniquely yours.
    • Senses. You have instincts, inherited characteristics, a gender, and a general state of health. You have experienced cold weather, sweltering days, sleepless nights, physical pain, aching muscles, and a blinding headache. Did you escape first love, embarrassment, the feeling of failure, or hear a bump in the night? You’ve been there—done that.
  • Thank you, Terry, for visiting today.

Keep reading for my thoughts about Double Dipped.

About Double Dipped

Double Dipped (One Scoop or Two)
Cozy Mystery Novella
Setting – Wisconsin
Part of: One Scoop or Two (50 books)
The Wild Rose Press, Inc (June 29, 2022)
Print length ‏ : ‎ 137 pages

Accepting second best is good for her career, but first-grade teacher, Retta Curt, delays signing up for the disappointment. Given two weeks to reconsider her contract, she retreats to Gram’s cottage on Moon Lake, the last place she felt contentment. But the cottage is derelict; Cousin Julie, distant; childhood beaux, Dean, bitter; and Sweet Picks, the family ice cream stand, in danger of folding. Magruder, a surly newcomer, is buying and then neglecting properties until nothing remains of the idyllic lakeside community she remembers. When vandals target Sweet Picks, Retta’s dreams to recapture her happy childhood collapse, and the return to Moon Lake becomes a decision worse than accepting her teaching contract. Star-crossed, can she save the family business and rediscover happiness, or is Retta destined for a second-best future?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Can you ever really go home again?

First-grade teacher, Retta Curt feels like her life is at a crossroads. There are some changes coming to the school where she teaches meaning her contract is now for a higher grade and she just isn’t sure if that is what she wants. She has just two weeks left to make her decision so on the spur of the moment she packs a bag and heads for Moon Lake. She has so many great memories of her time there with Gram and other friends and family.

When she arrives her heart just drops. The cottage is in bad shape, as is Sweet Picks, her family’s ice cream stand. So much more has changed as well. Family cottages are being bought up and turned into rental properties. The businesses are being bought too. A man named Magruder has big plans for the area turning it into a place Retta will no longer recognize.

Can she take the man on and try to return the charm to a place she loves so much or should she sign her contract and go home? She doesn’t have a lot of time to discover her bliss but she is going to use her time at Moon Lake to try to figure out how to get to her happy place.

Retta Curt is an excellent main character. She is dealing with real-life issues. She is easy to relate to and I found her very engaging. It is tough to go back and see people she hadn’t seen in years. There are emotions in play that have been brewing for years and like her, her friends have some challenges and sorrow in their lives. The author does a nice job of giving all the characters layers to peel away.

There was definitely something fishy going on at Moon Lake. Vandals have been targeting the ice cream stand and other places but there is something more. Retta is completely in the dark about what happened years ago but is quickly brought up to speed and works with her friends to solve the current crimes. The author portrayed the true complications of dealing with something huge in a small town where everyone knows each other and most of their business.

I loved the way the community supported Retta and her cousin Julie after so many things went wrong at Sweet Picks. It is something you used to see in a lot of small towns and it gave the story such a positive ending. It gave me the feelings I had growing up as a child when I played outside until the street lights came on and if I needed anything I could go to any house on the block.

Double Dipped is a fast read at only 137 pages but the characters developed nicely and the mystery was interesting. It is a sweet summer read that I found totally entertaining. I know this book is part of a compilation of books but I do hope we get to visit these characters again including a very lovable long-haired dachshund named Herman.

French Ghost (Paris Ghost Writer Series) by Corinne LaBalme #Spotlight / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @corinnelabalme

I am happy to shine my spotlights on French Ghost (Paris Ghost Writer Series)
by Corinne LaBalme today!

About French Ghost

French Ghost (Paris Ghost Writer Series)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Paris
Wild Rose Press (January 10, 2022)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 304 pages

Ghost-writer Melody Layne is stranded in Paris when the over-sexed but unloved French movie star who hired her to produce his memoir accidentally drowns before the interviews begin. It’s a major financial relief when his enigmatic Spanish son re-hires her, but the seductive Carlos Ortega is strangely silent about his reasons for funding a feel-good bio about a father that he clearly despised. There’s enough amour in the air for Melody to ignore this apparent paradox… at least until she uncovers a hidden cache of death threats addressed to the actor. For the French police, the sexy, secretive Spaniard – and sole heir to the actor’s immense fortune – is suddenly a prime murder suspect. Can Melody’s research into the Ghosts of Carlos-Past be enough to save her lover from prison?

About Corinne LaBalme

My first jobs after college (incredibly useful art history degree) were in the New York fashion industry (modeling, working for designers). When I gave up on my Greenwich Village walk-up (after realizing that I couldn’t bear to smoosh the cockroaches in my shower because they were a ‘family’), I cut out to Paris where I became Fashion Editor for the English language magazine PASSION.

I subsequently wrote and edited the gourmet destination guide LA BELLE FRANCE for fifteen years while freelancing for the NEW YORK TIMES Travel section, various in-flight magazines, and guide books (GAULT MILLAU, VIRGIN, ZAGAT). From 2011 – 2012, I wrote screenplays for the PBS travel series CUISINE CULTURE.

The cinema figures in FRENCH GHOST are loosely based on stars I’ve interviewed (and been groped by); the restaurateurs in Book 2 (FRENCH TOAST) are drawn from the lovely, often impractical, chefs I met through LA BELLE FRANCE.

I suspect that Book 3 will toss Melody Layne into the cut-throat Paris fashion scene. May the Gods of Ghosting have mercy on her soul…

Gone Astray by Terry Korth Fischer #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @terryiswriting

Gone Astray
by Terry Korth Fischer

About Gone Astray

Gone Astray
Mystery/Suspense
Setting – Nebraska
Publisher: Wild Rose Press (February 15, 2021)
Paperback: 300 pages
ISBN-10: 1509235256
ISBN-13: 978-1509235254
Digital ASIN: B08SQCWXBG

A heart attack sends detective Rory Naysmith reeling. Too young to retire, he accepts a position in small-town Winterset, Nebraska. Handed an unsolved truck hijacking case, with the assistance of a rookie, Rory sets out to prove he is still able to go toe-to-toe with younger men. When the body of a Vietnam veteran turns up, he dons his fedora and spit-shines his shoes. But before he can solve the murder, an older woman disappears, followed closely by a second hijacking. He doggedly works the cases, following a thread that ties the two crimes together. But can Rory find the mental and physical strength to up his game and bring the criminals to justice before disaster strikes and he loses his job?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Leaving a job in the city following a heart attack, Rory Naysmith settles in Winterset, Nebraska, a small town in need of a detective. The chief expects big things like clearing a cold case involving a truck hijacking. Not familiar with people and places in his new home he requests a little help and the chief assigns a young rookie. The cold case gets pushed aside when a Vietnam Vet is murdered quickly followed by a missing person. Then there is another truck hijacked.  A crime wave has hit the little midwest town and the chief expects his new detective to handle it all. While working hard he starts to believe at least two of the crimes could be connected, could the third be connected as well? In an effort to prove himself he needs answers.

Rory Naysmith is a very interesting character with a fascinating new hobby trying to reduce stress while still keeping his presence vital. A complicated character that I immediately found intriguing. I enjoyed his keen sense of humor and that he grew over the course of the story.  The author surrounds him with an eclectic supporting cast including a rookie that is eager to please so much so it could get him in a lot of trouble, the daughters of the missing woman, the chief of police, and other residents of Winterset. All are cleverly written and feel true to small-town life.

Solving the cases was not easy and I really enjoyed Rory’s process. As the plot started to come together the suspense ratcheted up nicely. The detective’s decisions were a little iffy in places but felt true to his nature. What I loved what the surprising reveal. My heart took a hit too before the book drew to a close.

Gone Astray piqued my interest from the first page. Quality characters with an exciting whodunit held on tight to the very end. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Rory Naysmith and the fine people of Winterset.

Coastal Corpse (A Cass Peake Cozy Mystery) by Rena Leith – Character Guest Post / #Giveaway @renaleith

Coastal Corpse
(A Cass Peake Cozy Mystery)
by Rena Leith

Character Guest Post

Cass Peake’s Musings on Ghosts and the Supernatural

Who believes in ghosts? I didn’t…until I met one. I thought my ex-college sweetheart George Ho was superstitious for his belief in the supernatural. I mean, who carries green onions around to ward off ghosts? But then I met Doris in the flesh…or lack thereof…you know what I mean! Before I met Doris, if you’d asked me what I thought a ghost would be like, I’d’ve said scary, spooky, evil, and hiding in dark corners waiting to pounce. Doris is about as far from that as chocolate is from kale. Although when she came through the bathroom door… But I don’t know what I would have done without her. I was so lost and angry when Phil and I divorced. All I could think about was being homeless and jobless. Finding a place to live was foremost in my mind. My anger was born of the pressure of my fear. Now I can’t imagine things turning out any other way. Sometimes fear still nibbles around the edges of my life, and I worry about losing all these new friends and the cottage that’s the symbol of my new freedom.

And then there’s George—still gorgeous after all these years. I used to think his belief in ghosts was mere superstition. Now I know better, but I can’t tell him that. He might not want to hang out with me in a haunted house. What was I thinking when I let him go all those years ago? But fate brought us back together again. What are the odds that we’d end up in the same small town? Now I have a second chance. Do I dare take it? I don’t know. Do I want to take it? Without a doubt. Small problem. Suppose he feels the same way. Suppose he wants to move in. I can picture the conversation now. Me: “Uh, George? I’m sorry I didn’t mention it before, but we have a roommate. I hope you don’t mind living with two women…one of whom is dead… George?” Yeah, maybe not. On the upside, Doris likes George.

While I’m thinking about it, it could be my imagination, but this town seems a bit unusual. When I walk along the shore at night, I listen to the susurration of the waves. But there are times when I hear other sounds like tiny whisperings in shadows in the trees. And what about that other black cat I saw in the mist as I climbed the hill? It was a short-haired black cat, slim and sleek, unlike Thor. It seemed to vanish in the mist. I’m telling you, there are strange things going on here. Las Lunas is a far cry from Pleasanton. There was the night I saw all the tiny lights on the hill, but the fireflies in California aren’t the variety that light up. What were the lights? They went out when I started talking about them. Coincidence? I’m telling you, there’s something strange going on here.

About Coastal Corpse

Coastal Corpse (A Cass Peake Cozy Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
The Wild Rose Press, Inc (September 30, 2019)
Print Length: 183 pages
ASIN: B07W3YR7VH

Happily settled in her cozy cottage with its resident ghost, Cass Peake looks forward to Halloween. Then another corpse is found on her beachfront. With the support of family and her ghostly roommate, Cass investigates. To her dismay, she finds the murder victim handled her goofy neighbor’s trust fund and he was in dire need of money. The suspect list grows with a former husband, another needy relative, and a maybe shady accountant who suddenly disappears. To top it all off, rumors circulate about treasure hidden in Cass’s cottage.

Detective George Ho doesn’t like his ex-girlfriend snooping around. Despite that, sparks still fly between him and Cass. But superstitious George has no idea Cass’s home is haunted. Can Cass solve the mystery and renew the romance with her ghost-adverse ex?

While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Former teacher Gilda Greco is drawn back into the past when one of her former students dies. Was it an accident or was it murder?

Constable Leo Mulligan has persuaded Gilda to return to Parry Sound and reunite with some of her former students and participate in a séance to try to get clarity about the young woman’s death. The first séance ends abruptly and they try again and again. Each time the level of true cooperation diminishes but Gilda gets to see the truth about who her grade eight students have turned out to be.

The author took me back to junior high, you know the cliques of girls and boys, the Barbie’s, the Ken’s, the popular kids, the nerds. How much everything changes though when you are adults and out in the real world. It took me a little bit of time sort out these characters and their relationships but it became clearer the deeper I got into the story. They all felt very authentic, all dealing with different issues in their lives and trying to get to the truth of how their fellow student Sarah McHenry died.

Since my son’s death, I have thought several times about contacting a physic or a medium so I found the séance that took place within the story to be quite interesting. There are always skeptics – but when you lose a loved one and you miss them so much you are willing to try anything to reconnect with them. Especially if your loved one took their own life like my son leaving so many unanswered questions. I think that is part of the reason I was so enthralled with those parts of the story. It was also because the author wrote it so well that you feel you were right in the room watching it all take place.

The reunion to solve the mystery was a unique concept. We quickly saw the constables train of thought in bringing Gilda into the group. Sarah has reached out to her teacher in an email Gilda thought was spam and hadn’t read. If Sarah thought Gilda could help her then he knew Gilda could help him solve his case. Very much a closed room mystery we knew the people around that table were his suspects. Gilda even thought he could be involved in Sarah’s death. It was very enlightening to watch Gilda take her time meeting with each of the students trying to figure out if one of the was actually a killer.

The subject matter took me personally into this story so I think I may have “a different” point of view that most cozy mystery readers who read this story. It was very well plotted and written and had strong characters. One character really pulled at my heartstrings because in some ways he reminded me of my son. So for that, this wasn’t a “fun” or “entertaining” read for me. It was a novel that made me think. Think of so many things outside of the mystery to be solved. Circumstances hit me at a different level. I am sure more deeply than the author ever intended. I did enjoy the story but in a way I never expected.

Here’s a “different kind” of cozy mystery. With a lot of suspense and tension, a lot of memory strolls, and the addition of an intriguing paranormal element, this mystery stands out.

This was a fun, delightful mystery and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This had been an interesting read, while we discover Gilda’s past, we will be involved in a quite twisted mystery; lies, jealousyandsecrets…
