When single father Danny Goodman suddenly finds himself unable to afford the private school his teenage daughter adores, he has no one to turn to for financial support.

In what seems like a stroke of brilliant luck, Danny meets Thomas Galvin, the father of his daughter’s new best friend, who also happens to be one of the wealthiest men in Boston. Galvin is aware of Danny’s situation and out of the blue offers a $50,000 loan to help Danny cover his daughter’s tuition. Uncomfortable but desperate, Danny takes the money, promising to pay Galvin back.

What transpires is something Danny never imagined. The moment the money is wired into his account, the DEA comes knocking on his door. Danny’s impossible choice: an indictment for accepting drug money that he can’t afford to fight in court, or an unthinkably treacherous undercover assignment helping the government get close to his new family friend.

As Danny begins to lie to everyone in his life, including those he loves most in the world, he must decide once and for all who the real enemy is or risk losing everything—and everyone—that matters to him.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my first book by Joseph Finder but it definitely won’t be my last.  I have wanted to read his books for some time so when NetGalley offered this book I jumped at it.

The author quickly engages the reader into Danny’s life as he stretched to his limits with no help in sight until he meets the father of his daughter’s new best friend. When the man offers him a loan and he accepts things start to careen out of control. I couldn’t have put down this book if I wanted to. The author proceeds to take us on a wild ride without giving us much time to catch our breath. My heart was just pounding as the pages kept turning.

Danny’s relationship with his daughter, Abby, was a struggle in itself. She had lost her mother and feels betrayed that the true story of her mother’s illness was kept from her. Danny tries to keep things as normal as possible including continuing her education as this pricey school. While I felt for Abby I was also disappointed in her. She knew money was tight, yet she tried to pull off the little rich girl persona with her friend Jenna. She spent so much time at Jenna’s and never would think of inviting Jenna to her home as that would bring out her lies.  Her character was really fleshed out but it was really hard to like her and made me feel even more compassion for Danny.

There are some crazy twists in this thriller that really turned the story on its ear. One had me saying “Oh My God”! That being said I can truly understand why Finder’s stories are being made into movies. This story would make a great movie!

If you like the mysteries of Harlan Coben you will love Suspicion. I will be adding the rest of Joseph Finder’s book to my wish list right away!!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past…and the lies that bind us together.

It’s a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.

Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.

As the body count mounts and Kat’s hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved—her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I know when I pick up a book written by Harlan Coben I will not be putting it down anytime soon. Missing You kept me up late into the night and the pages were flying. The John Waite song is still playing in my head.  You see it was Kat and Jeff’s special song and a very important clue.

Kat’s friend set her up with an online dating profile and it sets off a multitude of unexpected and unimaginable events. You will rethink you whole online life after reading this book.

The best thing about a Coben thriller in that his characters are so real and believable and the reader becomes invested in them very quickly. I love that our main character is female.  Within minutes we knew Kat was a strong woman but we also saw her vulnerable side. The fact the Kat is NYPD Detective with an analytical mind used to tracking down facts grips the reader as we follow the clues right along with her. The fact that is her life that is danger had my heart racing during this whole adventure.

The supporting cast is just as fully developed as the main character. From Kat’s friend Stacy, to the homeless man, Aqua, and even the psychopath and his henchman, these characters jump right off the pages.

There are many layers in this story and the clues are expertly interwoven throughout. Coben is one of those writers that sets his chapter breaks like a master, each a mini cliffhanger so you can’t stop reading even if you want to, leading to a very fast pace.

I believe I have read all of Harlan Coben’s books. I started with his Myron Bolitar series, books I picked up because I thought my husband  would like them. Since then I anxiously await each new story. And each time I reach the end the first word out my mouth is WOW!!! He is a fantastic writer and anyone would loves mystery/suspense/ thriller books with love his stories. Just be prepared, fix yourself a snack and a big glass of your favorite beverage, turn off the television and your phone, don’t plan anything because once you start reading you are not going to stop.

Every spy has a beginning and this story is about Colonel Aleksandr Talanov’s beginning. For Talonov, an agent of the KGB, his life as a spy started back in 1985 at the height of Cold War tensions between the Americans and Soviets. It was after the the Biological Weapons Treaty of 1972 and the Soviets ignored the treaty. They instead set up several facilities to create biological weapons to use around the world whenever they decided to attack. In 1985 one of the Soviet scientists working with these deadly toxins decides to defect and Talanov is assigned to bring him back. This assignment changes the entire course of Talanov’s life.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Wow! Wow! Wow! My husband and I read this book at approximately the same time and we both uttered those words as we finished the last page. We had the same reaction to Turner’s Greco’s Game which I reviewed last year and named Best Indie Suspense Thriller of 2012.

James Houston Turner packs a lot into the pages of this book, car chases, hand to hand combat, bombs, fires, gunfire, truth, lies, compassion and fear.  A major twist turns the whole story upside down. It was a non-stop ride from the first page until the last. I can easily see this as a movie. The drama was vivid in my mind’s eye.

Turner is an awesome writer. He has created this fabulous character, Aleksandr Talanov, and masterfully written another fantastic espionage thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.  I can’t believe how fast I read this book. The pages were flying.

There are 3 books featuring Aleksandr Talanov, Department Thirteen, Greco’s Game, and November Echo. I can’t believe I have not read Department Thirteen, but it is on my Wish List and I am going to get it on my reading schedule as soon as I can. These books can all be read as stand-alones and in any order. It is because of books like this that I had to add another level to my rating system because this book deserves more than 5 stars!!

Bravo James!!

Divorced father Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street.

Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his big mouth and bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Man, I thought I had bad luck! Austin Carr seems to be cursed and his ex-wife sounds like she was based on my ex-daughter-in-law. So I clearly had a soft spot for Austin from the beginning.

This story covers his life for about 3 short weeks in his life and Austin ends up in the emergency room more times than I can count, wonder if he had insurance 🙂 While tragic circumstances seem to sneak up all around him, Austin has a keen sense of humor and even when facing his own death he comes up with some classic one-liners. The author calls the story a “screwball mystery” and that describes it perfectly. It is full of suspense with snippets that will make you laugh out loud.

All Austin wants is get get his ex off his back so he can spend time with his kids. He owes her a lot of back support to make that happen so he is drawn into an unusual scheme or schemes and at times he in way over his head, drowning quite literally.

Getze has created a sensational character in Austin Carr. Even when he is breaking the law you want him to come out on top. Let’s face it a guy who wears a Speedo to his daughter’s swim competition to go unnoticed can’t be all bad.

If you like your mysteries with plenty of thrills with a side of crazy these pages will be flying. I hated for this book to end!!! I can’t wait for the re-release of Big Money!!!

Special Guest – Author of Murder at Castle Rock – Anne Marie Stoddard (Giveaway too!)

special guest blue

Today I am pleased to welcome Anne Marie Stoddard here!
Her book Murder at Castle Rock (An Amelia Grace Mystery)
was screaming at me from my Kindle!

anne marie stoddard
Why I Write Music Industry Fiction

When asked for advice on what to write, many authors will tell you to stick with what you know. That’s the case with my debut novel, Murder at Castle Rock, a murder mystery set in the music industry of Atlanta, Georgia. In the past decade, I have interned at two music venues and three music festivals and have worked at several other festivals and live music events. I also spent three years working in radio in Atlanta–at one point, during the summer of 2008, I was working promotions and events for 11 radio stations in Athens and Atlanta! I’d like to think those experiences gave me some good insight to tap into when I began writing my mystery.

murder ar castle rockStill, just because you know all there is to know about an industry or profession (or even just enough to get you by, which is my case!), what pushes you to begin writing about it?

For me, it started in 2011 when I picked up a mystery written by someone who worked in the fashion industry–so, naturally, she wrote about a murder that took place in the world of designers and fashion . It wasn’t my typical pick for a cozy mystery read, but something made me grab it off the shelf. As I read, I couldn’t help but think “What if something like this was happening in the music industry?” The more I thought that, the more I realized the lack of such a setting in any of the murder mysteries that I’d read.

The rock ‘n’ roll scene has such untapped potential in the mystery genre. It’s the perfect setting–the constant excitement of live music, the seedy behind-the-scenes goings on, the fame, the money–all ingredients for a fun rock ‘n’ roll whodunit!

With this in mind, I embarked on the project that consumed the next ten months of my life: Murder at Castle Rock. It was such an exciting experience to recall late nights working the door at The Georgia Theater, or standing outside The Masquerade and The Tabernacle running a live broadcast for the local radio station. All these hypothetical “what if” questions popped up in my head as I went, and I began imagining things that could’ve been happening behind the scenes. Soon I had created a story line for a full novel.

The more I wrote, the more inspired I felt. Some scenes were steeped with direct experience from my life in the industry–like a particular scene involving a radio station cargo van (I won’t spoil what happens! You’ll have to read it!)–and others were a fun venture into my imagination, using only the slightest bit of my experience to keep things realistic while allowing me to express myself creatively. When you write about jobs or settings you are familiar with, it’s amazing how easily the ideas start flowing.

The end result of my first attempt at music industry fiction is a novel that I’m very proud of. The characters are loosely based on people I’ve known and worked with mixed with some of my favorite character stereotypes. The venue itself, Castle Rock, is a fictional tribute to the Masquerade, an Atlanta venue where I spent several years working with radio events and concerts. (I still attend concerts there regularly, and I get a kick out of imagining my characters are there somewhere backstage!) The story line is original and hopefully one that will leave you in suspense over what will happen on the next page.

~Anne Marie

Amelia “Ame” Grace works as Booking Manager and Agent at Castle Rock, a famous concert venue in Atlanta. She has booked one of her own favorite stars comeback tour. Eighties Pop Rock Prince, Bobby Glitter, will be performing for 3 shows at Castle Rock and filming a DVD.

Before the first show even ends tragedy strikes. The owner of the venue hits the pavement falling from one of the Castle’s towers. Suicide or Murder??? The authorities suspect foul play and immediately start looking at the Castle Rock employees. Ame finds herself trying to clear her friend’s names while putting herself right in the line of fire. The curtain may be coming down at Castle Rock permanently.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This author knows what she writes. She shows us what goes on behind the scenes of the concerts we love and it isn’t always fun and games or pretty. In this case the Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll are joined by Murder and we go on one heck of a wild ride with Ame.

I was impressed with the layers to all of the characters. The venue is a character all its own. What really got me were the twists and surprises. I was drawn right in and engaged and then was like “What???” So good!! I love books like this when you think you know what is going on and then you find out you were so totally wrong.

Ame Grace is a quite a woman. She loves music and the music business. Stoddard has set the stage for many more musical mysteries. I can’t wait for the next concert to begin!!

He really enjoyed it!

In a world of dark and light, where East meets West, a horrific act of violence propels former thief Michael St. Pierre into a mystery that began five hundred years ago. . . .

In Richard Doetsch’s next unforgettable Thieves thriller, Michael and his ex-girlfriend KC Ryan have been blackmailed by a U.S. Army colonel. They are to travel to opposite ends of China, and each is responsible for stealing a piece of an ancient puzzle: a diary and a compass. With their lives dependent on each other’s success, they must face off against the complex underworld of the Chinese triads, a twisted female assassin, and a madman whose only desire is to possess the secrets held within the pages of the diary—knowledge that would give him enormous power and lead to the downfall of nations.

Moving from the glittering casinos of Macau to its dark and dangerous backstreets; from the palace at the heart of China’s Forbidden City to the medieval castles of Spain; from the seaside mansions along the Amalfi Coast to an uncharted Pacific island, Michael is in a race against time. Dan Sorenson was a high profile attorney at a big New York firm spending 12-16 hours a day working. Then the unthinkable happened. His wife and daughter were killed in a horrifying auto accident.  He quits the law firm and spends 18 months wallowing in his grief. Drinking so much that he blacks out and forgets hours of time.

At a party he meets someone who can give him the opportunity of a lifetime, a way to start over, but first he has to have them explain the whole idea again as he barely remembers the meeting.

An up and coming rapper has been accused of killing his pop star “girlfriend”. He swears he is innocent but the press has the story on every front page  so defending him will be an upward climb. He is not sure he is ready just a huge case. He also realizes this could be his last chance to get his life back on track. In a way he needs this client as much as his client needs him.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Oh this story is like a ride on a tilt-o-whirl. Full of twists and spins and plenty of excitement.

I love the way Mitzner creates characters readers will love even the ones we love to hate. Defending L.D. takes over Sorenson’s life. Nina was the calming influence he needed. J. D. has a past that has to be clarified and clarified again. The prosecuting attorney was a strong woman just doing her job. The trial judge adds a little humor to the story.

Told from Sorenson’s point of view readers have the “you are there” feeling.  The story builds and builds at a perfect pace leading up to the trial but I can’t tell you more you have to read it for yourself. Just know the pages will be flying.

Fans of Grisham and Turow will love Mitzner. With just two books out he is definitely an author to watch. I can’t wait until his next book. Will Dan Sorenson pop up again? I sure hope so!!

Shattered

Jennifer Lozano has just landed in Costa Rica for a friend’s bachelorette party. She was hoping a few days on a sunny, sandy beach would help her get over her broken heart. She doesn’t even get out of the airport before she finds herself in the middle of a gunfight. The man she sat next to on the plane is gunned down and one of the gunman is hit as well. Her nursing instincts kick in and she tries to help the man closest to her only to find herself being taken hostage by a group of Colombian rebels. They use her a shield to get out of the airport and take her with them as they head back to Columbia. She hears her captors talking about killing her and leaving her on the side of the road but right now they need her. The man hit was their leader and her nursing skills are needed to keep him alive. As long as she does that they will let her live, but then what?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Wow! Wow! WOW!!!

Lipperman takes us deep into the Colombian jungle and like Jennifer the reader will be deeply affected by this group of Freedom Fighters. Men, woman and children fighting against the powerful Cali Cartel to make the region safe for them and others. Jennifer also has an awakening about her own life witnessing “the family” she has been drawn into and by the person who comes to rescue her. He too will learn his life path before was cloudy, but after his time in Columbia everything becomes clear and in total focus. It takes time before they both realize they want the same thing.

We are taken from Texas to Costa Rica then on to Columbia and back to Texas. It is quite a journey and you will be glued to the pages for the entire trip. The characters and settings are so real. This author is excellent in putting the reader right there. You can hear the gunfire, smell the food, and feel the heat. The reader is immersed into the story and you become invested in these characters.

I found this author through her cozy mysteries so I want to warn there is nothing cozy about this story. It is a suspense and thrill filled story with just a bit of romance and a strong sense of family dynamic. It is a story of courage and perseverance, hope and dreams! This is story for your keeper shelf because it is a story you will want to read again and again.

Dead Peasants by Larry Thompson Virtual Book Tour (Giveaway too!)

DeadPeasants_banner

I am thrilled this awesome author had time to
give us a little insight on what made him write books like this one!

DeadPeasants_authorDolly asks about my becoming a writer later in life, my brother and the family tradition:

I think I always knew I would eventually become a writer.  I dabbled in journalism in college, but by then my brother, Thomas (Tommy) Thompson was well on his way to a successful writing career, first as a reporter and then with LIFE magazine in its heyday.  I chose not to follow in his footsteps and went to law school at The University of Texas.

From there I moved to Houston, married and started the law firm that I still head.  With three kids and a full time law practice there were not enough hours in the day to write; so, I shoved the idea aside.

When my youngest son graduated from SMU, I decided to see if I could write a novel.  Having had my last formal training in freshman English, I was brazen enough to forego writing seminars and just sat down at the computer.  That led to my first novel, So Help Me God.

My brother, by the way, left LIFE and published his first book when he was thirty-seven.  He went on to become an internationally famous best-selling author who died way to young with liver cancer.

It was twenty years after his death that I began So Help Me God. So, I suppose that it is something in our DNA that leads us into writing.  Whatever it is, I find I enjoy the creative process and look forward to my time at the computer (usually a couple of hours early in the morning before I head off to a full day as a trial lawyer).

Dollycas’s Thoughts

RIVETING!!!

I loved this book! I sat down on a Sunday afternoon and started this book and hardly moved until I reached the last word.

I wish I knew an attorney like Jack Bryant. He has enough money to live comfortably forever and retires to put his son first. Something he hasn’t been able to do before because of his career. But his son is grown and while it is great having him around and watching him play ball, Jack needs more. He decides to give back to his community by helping those who need legal help but could never afford proper representation. An added bonus is his son being able to work with him.

I was personally touched by the man he helped with his mortgage foreclosure. This is happening all over the U.S. and the banks are winning because people can’t get help or get scammed by the wrong help. Scary to think the home you have had for years could be gone and you could be homeless.

The real meat of the story is the case he takes on for June Davis. Her husband Willie passed away and like always she is struggling to just get by. Then she receives a surprise from the U.S. Postal Service that in Jack Bryant’s hands could change her life forever. It will also open up a huge can of worms that will start to link together several unexplained deaths and will put his own life in danger.

Thompson has created fantastic well rounded characters and writes their stories in such a way that you are right there with them in the courtroom, on the streets and in his office RV. It also felt has if I was watching a movie, the pages were turning so fast.

A legal thriller that packs quite a punch!! This is one I would shout about from the rooftops if I could!! a perfect escape 5 STARFISH5 STARFISH

A Bullet For Carlos by Giacomo Giammatteo Virtual Book Tour with Giveaway

A Bullet for Carlos

Detective Connie Giannelli’s life has been torn apart several times. First when her mother died and then years later when she found out her Uncle Dominic was in the mob. Her life is about to be shredded again, and this time it could destroy her.

Connie’s love of family and her badge are both threatened when an undercover drug bust leaves two cops dead and the drugs missing. Internal Affairs is looking for any excuse to take her badge, but she’s not worried about them finding the missing drugs—her secrets could prove to be far worse.

Now Connie’s racing against the clock to figure out who killed her partners and took the drugs—dirty cops or Uncle Dominic’s friends. And she has to do it before IA pins the whole damn thing on her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am so impressed with the strong female character that Giammatteo has written. Connie Giannelli is formidable woman you don’t want to mess with. Even when sent away from New York to Texas she is determined to get her man or men and bring them to justice. What a crazy life she has had and continues to lead!

He has also written some dynamo supporting characters from her uncles to the cops she works with both in New York and Houston to the cartel in Mexico. They are so fully developed and well described that you feel like you are watching a movie or television drama instead of reading a book.

I reviewed another book my this author last September, Murder Takes Time: Friendship & Honor Series, Book One (Volume 1), so I knew he created fabulous characters. In fact one crosses over to this book. The author tells his story from multiple points of view and while a tad confusing in that book he has ironed out all the issues in this one with clever icons to start each chapter and better transitions.

The story is full of action,  suspense, and has engaging dialogue giving you that hold on tight/edge of your seat feeling. The book is graphic and does have some strong language that would be expected in a book of this type.

I am thrilled this book is the first in a series because I want to know more about Connie and her unconventional family and the choices she makes going forward. I hated to see this book end. I anxiously await A Bullet For DominicMurder Has Consequences (Friendship & Honor, Book 2) is available now in E-book (Kindle) format. Giacomo Giammatteo is definitely an author to watch. I expect to see his books on bestseller lists everywhere very soon!
