Tracey Garvis Graves – and Anna and T.J. – return in this companion novella to the New York Times bestseller On the Island.

Dot-com millionaire Owen Sparks shows up on Anna and T.J.’s doorstep with quite a story.

That is all I am going to tell you because I don’t want to spoil the wonderful novella.  If you read On the Island last year and enjoyed it as much as I did, don’t read the synopsis of this story you see everywhere. Just order the book and sit back and relax and enjoy the writing of Tracey Garvis Graves. She is a gifted storyteller.

If you haven’t read On the Island read that first or this story will not work for you at all.  Questions are answered and we see how Anna and T.J. are moving ahead.

I recommend highly all three of this author’s books. Every one of them has been a perfect escape!! Watch this author, I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next!

What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris Canton has been unemployed for a year and his wife Claire is bringing in what income she can with her freelance Graphic Arts business. Chris is becoming more and more withdrawn and Claire feels them growing further and further apart. When he is finally offered a job that will have him traveling most of every week Claire thinks this will help their finances but may be the end of their marriage. She has never felt so alone.

Daniel Rush, a local police officer, pulls Claire over for a routine traffic stop and he feels immediately drawn to her. When they meet again at the 4th of July parade he tells her about a design job for the police department. They soon end up spending a lot of time together. They know they can be no more than friends but they love being together. They soon find they may be crossing the line Claire promised to never cross.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

That sticky question: Can a man and a woman just be platonic friends? I believe they can but there are times and situations that have you walking pretty close to the fire. I have to stay at times I wanted Claire and Daniel to be together and others when I wanted her to fight for her marriage as hard as she could.

The author handled the whole situation masterfully and she kept this reader totally captivated from page one until the final word. I learned after reading On The Island to expect wonderful stories from Tracey Garvis Graves.

Told from several points of view the reader is pulled right into the story. You feel like you are walking in each characters shoes and see things so clearly. Friendships can grow in many different ways depending on those involved and the author could have taken these 3 characters in a very different or several different directions. It’s all about choices. I bet everyone who reads this story knows people that may have made the opposite and even the same choices.

I have to say Daniel was an exceptional man. Any woman would be blessed to have a man like him in their lives, platonically or romantically.

An emotionally honest story. I really enjoyed it!

On the Island

Anna Emerson needs a getaway. She is a 30 year old English teacher in a stalled relationship. Before she makes a huge decision she jumps at the chance for a real adventure. She accepts an offer that will get her out of Chicago for the entire summer. She will be tutoring 16 year old T.J. on a beautiful tropical island.

T.J. Callahan has been battling cancer but it is now in remission. It is completely his parents desire to spend the summer in the Maldives. They think away from his friends, with a tutor, he can catch up on the classwork he missed last year so he will not be held back. He would rather stay in Illinois with his friends. He talks his parents into letting him stay home until after a friend’s party. His parents fly ahead and he will fly over with his tutor.

Anna and T.J. board a private plane for the final leg of their trip to the Callahan summer home. Then the unthinkable happens. While flying over the 1200 Maldives’ islands the plane crashes in the Indian Ocean. They make it to the shore of one of the small uninhabited islands. They just need to survive until someone finds them. When weeks, turn to months, their challenges mount. T.J. is growing into a man right before Anna’s eyes. Food, fire and water are not the only challenges they face.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Masterfully written! A beautiful story of so much more than mere survival. A truly wonderful debut.

Tracey Garvis Graves took what could have been a tricky story line and created a awesome book.

The characters are real and each are at a type of crossroads in their lives. The land on the island as strangers and quickly become best friends long before they fall in love. They need each other to survive but the relationship evolves a little more with each passing day. The author is written with each chapter alternating the point of view between Anna and T.J. which allows the reader into each of their thoughts. It didn’t take long to become engaged in their story.

Life On the Island was far from ideal. Dealing from basic survival like building a fire, catching a fish, collecting rain water to drink and hoping each and every day to be rescued.

Need a beach read this summer, this is it! It is a New York Times Bestseller for a reason. Tracey Garvis Graves is a new author to watch! I cannot wait to read more of her work!!
