An irresistible new series from New York Times bestselling author Lynn Cahoon about an amateur sleuth who doesn’t just solve crimes, she writes about how to do it…
TIP #1: WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU COUNTS AS WORK EXPERIENCE
Meg Gates could use a guidebook for life. Indeed, she’s faced some challenges. She dropped out of college to work for a tech startup that failed—and her fiancé just took her bridesmaid to Italy on what was supposed to be Meg’s honeymoon. At twenty-six, Meg has taken the ferry ride of shame from Seattle back to Bainbridge Island to live with her family. At least she has her rescue cocker spaniel, Watson, by her side. But it’s Meg who could use a rescue—and she’s hoping it will come in the form of a part-time gig doing research for a bestselling mystery writer.
TIP #2: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW—OR WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW
That’s when the lightbulb goes on: Meg will write her own guidebook—a manual on criminal investigation. But before she can impress her new boss with her pet project, the author’s agent is found dead on the rocks beneath the author’s Gothic mansion. Now it’s time to put her guide to the test, as Meg sets out to clear her employer of suspicion and solve the crime. But there’s one important caveat she’ll have to add to her guide—
TIP #3: BEWARE OF UNKNOWN DANGERS
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Meg Gates is twenty-six and is returning home to Bainbridge Island after her job at a tech startup disappeared, and her fiancé vanished to Italy with her bridesmaid. Now she and her rescue cocker spaniel, Watson, are living in the apartment above her aunt’s garage, and she is working at her mother’s bookstore. The one light in her life is landing a job working for a bestselling mystery writer. This sparks an idea for Meg; she is going to write a book herself, a guidebook for amateur sleuths. She doesn’t even have a chance to discuss it with her new boss because a dead body is found at the author’s home by the Haunted Cliffs. The victim was identified as the author’s agent, Robert Meade III, and mystery author, Lilly Aster, is the main suspect.
Meg thinks it’s the perfect time to put her future guidebook into action, clear Lilly of the crime, and catch the true killer; if the killer doesn’t catch her first.
This new series from Lynn Cahoon is off to an excellent start. Meg is a protagonist who is so genuine that it is easy to get invested in her life. She also has two awesome friends in Dalton and Natasha. Her Aunt Melody and Uncle Troy, the town police chief, have rented her the apartment above their garage, and Aunt Melody gives her hotel-style perks, including muffin baskets, stocking her fridge, and changing the bed sheets. Meg’s mother is a little over-the-top. At first, believing Meg and her ex would get back together, then sending her to a church group to meet a good man. I really enjoyed the comfortable dialogue and the heartwarming relationships.
Readers are treated to a well-plotted mystery. Each chapter starts with a relevant tip from Meg’s future guidebook, as Meg, Natasha, Dalton, and sometimes Meg’s lovable cocker spaniel, Watson, are drawn into investigating the agent’s murder. At first, Meg’s uncle Troy tells her to stay out of his investigation, but it doesn’t take long for him to realize that’s not happening. I appreciated how Meg, Dalton, and Natasha gathered to share any information and how they teamed up when necessary. With a murderer on the loose, Dalton always makes sure the girls get home safe. Meg does share information with her uncle Troy, but it isn’t always reciprocal. After following clues, testing theories, keen investigations, and a few twists, everything fell into place for Meg and her friends. I had a wonderful time tagging along with The Mystery Crew.
An Amateur Sleuth’s Guide to Murder was a truly entertaining read with endearing characters, a marvelously written mystery, set on a beautiful island, a ferry ride away from Seattle. Meg really impressed me with her strength, attitude, and growth over the course of this story. Be sure to check out the Murderous Mac and Cheese recipe shared after this story ends. It sounds delicious!
