It’s summertime in Winsome. Washington Acres is abloom, Megan is preparing for the grand opening of their wood-fired pizza farm, and things with Megan’s beau, handsome Dr. Finn, are getting as hot as the August temperatures.

But when Megan’s ne’er-do-well father arrives in Pennsylvania with his high-maintenance Italian wife, Sylvia, and announces they’re staying at the new yoga retreat center a town away, a sweet occasion sours.

Eager to secure pieces for her Milan boutique, Sylvia finagles a meeting with up-and-coming artist Thana Moore, whose work is showing at the retreat center. After their explosive encounter, Thana is murdered and Sylvia becomes the prime suspect.

Only Sylvia isn’t the only one with ties to the artist—once upon a time, Thana Moore had been Megan’s best friend.

As Megan delves into Thana’s past, piecing together the years since their falling out, she realizes that something sinister is afoot in Bucks County. Unless Megan can find the killer, this idyllic summer will turn nightmarish. Innocent people may be imprisoned—and even more could die.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Summer brings Megan’s father and his wife Sylvia to Winsome from Italy. Megan thinks it a vacation to see her but Sylvia quickly tells her it is for business and that they will be staying at a new resort a whole town away. Her feelings are hurt but realizes having Sylvia and her dad at the resort will give her more time to focus on the grand opening of the new wood-fired pizza farm.

But when one of the artists Sylvia met with to acquire pieces for boutique ends up dead and the police suspect her of the murder things quickly go downhill. The artist, Thana Moore, had once been Megan’s best friend, but they have not been in contact for years. Megan decides to look into Thana’s past to try to clear her father’s wife, but what she uncovers in really surprising and could put more lives in jeopardy.

So much is happening in Winsome in this installment that the pages almost flew from one to the next. I love the idea of the wood-fired pizza farm and all the plans to expand it after the grand opening. The town and store/restaurant are places I would love to visit.

The characters are what really bears fruit in this story. Megan and her grandmother Bibi are true and so genuine. I felt so bad for them. They wanted to spend time with their father/son and Sylvia planned everything so that there was little time for that. Megan’s mother makes an appearance too. I found the way they all interacted very believable. The new characters in this story are very fleshed out, unique, and true to life. They all made an impression on me may it be good or bad or somewhere in between.

The mystery was compelling, with many facets that truly kept me guessing right up until the end. It was nicely balanced with everyday life. The main suspects are close to Megan so she is very invested in finding the true killer.

Rooted in Deceit will have you rooted to your seat from the first page to the last. A first-rate mystery with very interesting characters. This story is ripe and ready for picking. “Pick” up your copy as soon as you can. I have enjoyed every book in the Greenhouse Mystery Series!

Escape with Dollycas

By Wendy Tyson

One of my earliest memories as a child involved a trip to the Pennsylvania countryside. I was about three or four years old, and my parents took me and my brother to visit friends in the mountains. We drove to their farmhouse in the evening, and when we arrived it was late. I remember a collage of sensations: cold air against my skin, an endless sky, a cozy bedroom, the soft fur of their cat, and a warm bed with a thick quilt and coverlet. I can’t tell you much else about that visit beyond how it made me feel, but for some reason the experience stayed with me.

It was only recently that I realized I’d recreated some of that feeling in our new home, a chalet in Vermont’s Green Mountains. The house is tiny by today’s standards, but cozy, and the living room looks out on a deck and the mountains beyond. We keep the house cool, but I’ve dressed the beds with heavy quilts—the weight of the blankets is somehow a comfort. At night when I walk the dogs, my senses are assaulted by the scents and sounds of the surrounding woods.

In the spring, the peeper frogs chirp in an amphibian chorus, and coyotes, owls, turkeys, and bullfrogs are often heard in the summer and fall through our open windows. Winter is dead quiet, except for the wind and occasional freezing rain/sleet pelting the metal roof—but the view of the snow carpeting the countryside? Breathtaking. The biggest delight of all may be the night sky. We’re treated to a blanket of stars on clear nights, and sometimes my family and I will spend hours outside, identifying constellations and enjoying the peace.

The house is a favorite place to write. When it’s cold outside (or buggy), I pull the table in front of the window and write on my laptop, but in the summer (once the black flies are gone), I write outside, either on the deck or at a table under a tree in the woods. I prefer a view when I write. Maybe it’s the series I’m working on, but the connection to nature helps me think.

In some way I’ve created a similar retreat with my Greenhouse mysteries—Washington Acres Farm. Megan and her grandmother Bibi—along with two dogs, two goats, a barn cat, and a brood of chickens—live in the Pennsylvania countryside, in an old farmhouse, surrounded by woods. The kitchen is an amalgamation of the kitchens I grew up in, especially those of my grandmothers. It’s not modern or flashy. The cabinets are old, built by Megan’s grandfather in his workshop. There’s no island or high-end appliances. Instead, a beat-up farm table functions as workspace and an eating area. The gas stove is old but reliable, and the double farmhouse sink is often filled with fresh vegetables from the farm waiting to be simmered or stewed or steamed.

The Washington Acres farm kitchen is a place to congregate and talk. Tough discussions are had there. And often it’s the place the pieces of a mystery come together.

Megan, a military widow and former Chicago environmental lawyer, returns to the fictional town of Winsome and her grandmother’s farm when in her early thirties, at the behest of her father, who needed Megan to stay with her grandmother. But as with many homecomings, Megan’s return to Winsome is as much a salve to her own emotional wounds as it is a help to Bibi. Megan finds healing in that kitchen, in the drafty bedrooms, within the walls of the old barn, and along the forest trails.

My mother and I discussed my early childhood memory recently. She was surprised the trip made such an impression. We only stayed at the farmhouse for one night, and by the time we arrived it was late, so she and my father put my baby brother and me to bed. It was cold outside, she said, and the house was drafty and large. She didn’t recall a cat. I slept in a room with a handmade quilt, and the next morning we had pancakes in the big working kitchen.

“You may be transferring some of your experiences from your grandmothers’ houses onto that trip,” my mom suggested. “You always like to spend time with your grandparents.”

Maybe she’s right. Maybe it was the elusive nature of such an early memory that had an indelible effect on me. Or maybe it was reinforced by the trips I would take later in life. Regardless of the why, now that I’m older and have lost so many people who were dear to me, I’m grateful I could recreate that sense of cozy in my Vermont home, and equally grateful to spend time in Washington Acres with Megan and Bibi.

I hope readers enjoy it there, too.

~Wendy

Thanks for visiting Wendy, I love this post!

It’s time to cuddle up with a holiday whodunit. Smell the crisp pines and baking cranberries as you sip your hot apple cider. It may be the season, but the mood in Winsome is anything but jolly.

Megan Sawyer is determined to farm year-round. So much so that she braves a December snowstorm to pitch her fresh greenhouse greens to Philadelphia chefs.

And then she sees a stranger stranded on the side of the road.

But this woman is no stranger to Winsome. It’s Becca Fox. A love chemist (you read that right). She’s headed to her aunt’s house to sell her love potions at holiday events.

Or so Becca thinks.

Her sneaky aunt only invited Becca home to reunite her with her estranged father. It sounds noble and kind-hearted, until the man ends up dead.

Megan soon finds herself in the middle. She realizes Becca’s not the only one getting iced over. Megan’s own aunt, the famous mystery author, is dragged into the drama. Her novels implicate her and she’s in trouble.

Now it’s personal. Our Megan must follow a cryptic trail of literary clues, all while sifting through the victim’s sordid past. She gets closer to the truth as the murderer gets closer to her.

How’s that for a ho ho ho? Don’t let your fresh apple crisp burn in the oven because you’re lost in this holiday homicide.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The “seeds of revenge” are planted deep within this mystery. Megan Sawyer, being the good person she is rescues a stranded motorist in the middle of a blizzard. She delivers Becca Fox right to her aunt’s door. Becca plans to sell her “love potions” at her aunt’s nursery over the holidays. Things are frosty upon her arrival as she meets her father, the man she holds responsible for her mother’s death, on her aunt’s front porch. Becca is upset about the collusion between the two. Megan finds herself in icy straights when the man is found dead. Not only is Becca a suspect but in a remarkable twist so is her own aunt, the famous mystery author. Megan has no choice but the dig in to the investigation putting herself on the killer’s hit list. It doesn’t matter if she has been naughty or nice, this could be her last Christmas in Winsome.

I have heard of love potions including the famous Love Potion #9, but I had never heard of a Love Chemist. Becca Fox has an interesting little business but she has hasn’t had it easy since her mother died. She believes her father killed her mother and she has not had anything to do with him since. She has a brother but he does not hold the same beliefs about their father. Megan is drawn to her and so was I. Becca is a complicated character and Ms. Tyson has really brought her to life in this story.

Bibi, Megan’s grandmother, reminds me so much of my own grandmother and mother. A hard working woman determined to get to the truth no matter what. She is also one to not hold her tongue. She will tell you her opinions and thoughts on virtually any subject as woman of that generation tends to do. She warms my heart.

I also love Scottish vet, Daniel “Denver” Finn and the direction of his relationship with Megan. It is fun to see this relationship grow.

The pacing of this book is different. I felt the story was unfolding at a comfortable pace, the clues were being uncovered and I was right there with Megan the entire way, engaged and captivated. The ending was a total surprise. Then I looked up and realized I had read the entire book in one sitting and faster than I had read a book in a very long time. Truly is was a fast pace story but not once did anything feel rushed or glossed over. The author delivered a truly fantastic read.  I never once looked for a stopping place or even thought about putting the book down.

The characters are well defined and the mystery was exceptional. A cozy mystery with a bit of an edge and I loved it!! It was a trip to Paradise, a chilly escape in the winter but Paradise nonetheless.

You will want to start this series from the beginning and get to know the characters from the start. I am anxiously awaiting and excited for my next trip to Winsome.

Allison Campbell accepted a dream assignment: a visit to the Italian Dolomites to help Hollywood socialite Elle Rose reinvent herself. A guest cottage on the grounds of Elle’s historic castle promises to be a much-needed respite from Allison’s harried life on the Philadelphia Main Line, and the picturesque region, with its sharp peaks, rolling pastures, and medieval churches, is the perfect spot from which to plan her upcoming wedding.

Only this idyllic retreat is anything but peaceful. There are the other visitors—an entourage of back-biting expats and Hollywood VIPs. There’s Elle’s famous rock star father, now a shadowy recluse hovering behind the castle’s closed doors. And then there’s Elle’s erratic behavior. Nothing is as it seems. After a guest plummets to her death from a cliff on the castle grounds, Allison’s trip of a lifetime turns nightmarish—but before she can journey home, Allison must catch a killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This story takes us off to Italy when Image Consultant Allison Campbell takes on Elle Rose as a client. Elle lives in a castle near the Italian Dolomites and has offered Allison, Jason and Grace, Allison’s niece, a guest cottage on the property. Since Jason needs to go to Austria for his new job it seems like an ideal assignment. She never imagined the castle would be crowded with so many people all there supposedly to work with Elle’s father. A father who is apparently very ill and who is rarely seen.

Allison is dismayed by her clients behavior and unwillingness to put in the work to upgrade her image. In fact she is thinking about quitting. Then one of the guests is found dead at the bottom of a sheer cliff. The death looks suspicious and the authorities demand Allison not leave town. She decides to do a little investigating herself with Vaughan and Jamie’s help. Everything they uncover leads them in several directions but they all know there is a killer in the castle.

I must first address the setting – a castle and vast grounds that include several cottages, a spa, a pool, woods with hiking trails up and down and around the Dolomites. A picturesque place that for me would be a very hard place to leave. But then with a killer on the lost, probably not so idyllic, right now.

All the characters I loved from previous stories are back. Not everyone is in Italy though.  Mia and Vaughn arrive a few days after Allison, Jason and Grace. They relationship is still a little rocky and Allison and Jason may take the plunge into marriage again. Jamie has stayed home but he uses his skills pretty well from there. I really enjoy the way the characters continue to grow in each book in this series. They are very engaging and believable.

The search for the killer was much like a closed room mystery. It has to be someone staying on the property. Between the guests and the staff there are plenty of suspects. The motive for the murder was very hard to determine and it could be connected to another recent death. Seriously at one time or another throughout the story I had then all pegged as the murderer. Heck, one of the goats could have pushed her off the cliff. It is only when some key information is discovered that things start to make sense. Tyson had us on a twisty trail to figure out this mystery and I loved it.

This trip to Italy was a Perfect Escape! You should book your trip today!

Megan Sawyer should be shouting from the barn roof. Washington Acres survived its first year, the café has become a hotspot for locals, and Winsome’s sexy Scottish veterinarian is making house calls—only not for the animals. But as summer slips into fall and Winsome prepares for its grand Oktoberfest celebration, beer isn’t the only thing brewing.

When the town’s pub owner is killed in a freak accident, Megan suspects something sinister is afoot in Winsome—but no one is listening. As nights grow longer and temperatures chill, Megan must plow through Winsome’s fixation with autumn festivities to harvest the truth—before another dead body marks the season.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is our second visit to Winsome, Pennsylvania and we are just in time the Oktoberfest celebration.  The whole town wants their farm, store, pub or restaurant to be a main sponsor for the celebration and some feathers get ruffled when the select spots go to unsuspected places. In fact, when a pub owner is killed Megan doesn’t think it was truly an accident, but would someone actually kill because they weren’t chosen? So while getting the family farm and store ready for the celebration she is also trying to pick the killer and it isn’t as easy as picking a pepper or a pumpkin.

This was a pretty complex mystery with several suspects, means, and motives.

Megan has gotten through her first year and both the café and the farm are doing very well. She has even found time to spend with a certain veterinarian. That is until she gets wrapped up in this investigation. I knew she was a strong woman in the first story but she seems much more confident now as she has settled in. Her grandmother, another strong woman reminds me a lot of my mother. Determined, respected and not afraid to speak her mind. Dr. Denver Finn was extremely busy throughout the story taking care of a sick horse and other emergencies but he was still able to carve out time for Megan. All the characters a very believable and appealing. Their dialogue rings true, including Denver’s Scottish accent.

As I said the mystery is complex, in fact there are two mysteries to solve. Ms. Tyson entangles the plots together so well, weaving them together with deception, secrets, and untruths. I enjoyed doing my best to figure it all out before Megan but the ending was a complete surprise.

This one will grab you from the start and you will have a very hard time putting down.

Synopsis

When Megan Sawyer gives up her big-city law career to care for her grandmother and run the family’s organic farm and café, she expects to find peace and tranquility in her scenic hometown of Winsome, Pennsylvania. Instead, her goat goes missing, rain muddies her fields, the town denies her business permits, and her family’s Colonial-era farm sucks up the remains of her savings.

Just when she thinks she’s reached the bottom of the rain barrel, Megan and the town’s hunky veterinarian discover the local zoning commissioner’s battered body in her barn. Now Megan is thrust into the middle of a murder investigation—and she’s the chief suspect. Can Megan dig through small-town secrets, local politics, and old grievances in time to find a killer before that killer strikes again?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Like our author, Megan Sawyer is a lawyer. Megan feels like she is leaving the rat race behind when she returns to Winsome to help her grandmother and open a store and café featuring things grown on her family’s organic farm. But Winsome has its own share of rats, namely Zoning Commissioner, Simon Duvall. He is holding up her permits and keeping her from her grand opening. She can handle the rain and her goats wandering but she can’t let one man keep her from her livelihood.

With the goats getting loose a lot, she has the veterinarian on speed dial.   Dr. Denver Finn, is easy on the eyes and has a delicious accent and he would like to get to know Megan even better. Romance takes a back seat when she and the good doctor find Simon Duvall dead in her barn. Her grievance with the man was public knowledge making her the prime suspect in his murder. She may live in Winsome but she could lose some if she doesn’t dig deep and figure out who really killed the rat, I mean Mr. Duvall.

I was already a fan of this author and her Allison Campbell Mysteries so I was anxious to read this story.  She has started off this series wonderfully.

First she gives us great realistic characters with depth. Megan is a strong woman with a dream. I think it will be a great success and she is definitely going to need more help. Especially if she keeps tracking down murders. Her grandmother, Bibi, will find her way right into your heart. Another strong woman who hates to slow down. She is excited about the new family venture and will do anything she can to help. Dr. Denver Finn is an interesting man and has a way with both people and animals. He is watching over a veteran with some issues due to his time overseas. He also rescues animals. He had me in his corner immediately. We also have a few 4 legged characters as well to add to the fun.

Wendy Tyson wraps these characters in a story that meshes history, politics, and general small time life. She also blends in a murder mystery with more twists than a tornado. Each time I thought I had it figured out there was another clue that wrecked my theory. She added an element I never even thought about that turned the story on its ear. The ending was just fabulous!

I hope this series lasts a good long time. I will tramp through the mud, the rain, the snow with Megan anytime. I want to get to know all the characters better. I can hardly wait for the second book.

When image consultant Allison Campbell attends an award ceremony to honor a designer friend, she’s thrust into a murder investigation. Only this time, it’s personal.

A former boyfriend is dead, slain on the streets of Philadelphia. His widow claims he was meeting with Allison, yet Allison hadn’t spoken to him in years. Nothing about his death—or life—makes sense. When compromising photos from their past arrive at Allison’s office, they raise more questions than they answer.

Driven to find justice, Allison deconstructs the image her ex had created for himself, looking for clues about the man he’d become. As her hunt for the truth unveils secrets, Allison’s past and present collide—with deadly results.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Wendy Tyson just keeps getting better and better! Dying Brand, the 3rd book is this series is the most compelling read of the 3 and the others were excellent.

Alison Campbell is an image consultant working side by side with her friend Vaughn. When a former boyfriend is found dead in one of the most dangerous places in Philadelphia Allison just knows there is more to the story. Especially when some racy photos from her past start arriving at her home and office and to her current boyfriend that also happens to be her ex-husband Jason. Things get dicey at home and Allison decides she has to find out what really happened and why.

Tyson takes us on a roller coaster ride as her protagonist puts herself and her friends in some very dangerous situations while they search out the truth. As always the characters are captivating and their lives are complex bringing to light a few subplots. In this installment we really get to know more about supporting cast and  Allison too. I really appreciate the way they are all evolving and growing. Jason and Allison are working on their relationship and Mia and Vaughn’s has hit rough patch. Jamie’s life also takes an interesting turn. Allison’s sister comes to town adding a whole new twist to the story.

There are many things happening all at once throughout the entire story but Tyson entwines them all together in a very cohesive and entertaining story.

While this book can be read as a stand alone I highly recommend reading all 3 to get the most enjoyment from the story. Start will Killer Image, then Deadly Assets, and then Dying Brand.

Synopsis:

An eccentric Italian heiress from the Finger Lakes. An eighteen-year-old pop star from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Allison Campbell’s latest clients seem worlds apart in every respect, except one: Both women disappear on the same day. And Allison’s colleague Vaughn is the last to have seen each.

Allison’s search for a connection uncovers an intricate web of family secrets, corporate transgressions and an age-old rivalry that crosses continents. The closer Allison gets to the truth, the deadlier her quest becomes. All paths lead back to a sinister Finger Lakes estate and the suicide of a woman thirty years earlier. Allison soon realizes the lives of her clients and the safety of those closest to her aren’t the only things at stake.

After a traumatizing experience with one of her previous clients Psychologist Allison Campbell has taken her career in a new direction. She has become an image consultant helping adults with everything from self esteem to current fashion. She works with those at crossroads in their lives. She moves in a world of powerful executives, wealthy, and eccentric ex-wives. Women heading back into the workforce after a divorce or the children are off to school, anxiety of public speaking, and general confidence boosting. Creating a better public image for her clientele. She works with adults – no children – until now.

Congressman and White House hopeful Hank McBride and his wife Sunny have convinced her she is their 15 year old daughter’s only hope. Maggie doesn’t fit the cookie cutter image of a politician’s daughter and her behavior and Goth sense of style needs to be rectified immediately and they will pay a large sum of money to Allison if she can make it happen. After meeting Maggie, Allison breaks her own rule, hoping she can help Maggie because she realizes there is much more to her story than poor fashion sense and teenage angst. But she never expected the girl would be accused of the ritualistic murder of a local divorce attorney.

While Allison tries to prove Maggie’s innocence it reignites a lot of memories of another young girl she tried to help and failed. As much as she wants to let go of the past and not get any further involved in the murder investigation she can’t help herself from landing right in the middle of it all.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This was so not what I expected this story to be. It is edgy and dark and absolutely fantastic. What a debut for this new series!!

The plot has many layers. The characters so well created. There are so many twists and turns, it is an emotional roller coaster ride. I am really impressed Allison Campbell. A very smart protagonist with the ability to really think on her feet. I am anxious to see her continue to evolve in future stories.

This subject matter could be a bit heavy but the author tempers that with a touch of romance and a bit of humor. When I was first approached about this book I was expecting a cozy mystery. This is definitely not a cozy mystery. I would call it the “edge of your seat” kind of book and a book you should plan to read all at one time because it is extremely hard to put down.
