When a woman goes missing in a spring snowstorm and is found dead in a bear’s den, Sheriff Martha Ettinger reunites with her once-again lover Sean Stranahan to investigate. In a pannier of the dead woman’s horse, they find a wallet of old trout flies, the leather engraved with the initials EH. Only a few days before, Patrick Willoughby, the president of the Madison River Liars and Fly Tiers Club, had been approached by a man selling fishing gear that he claimed once belonged to Ernest Hemingway. A coincidence? Sean doesn’t think so, and he soon finds himself on the trail of a stolen trunk rumored to contain not only the famous writer’s valuable fly fishing gear but priceless pages of unpublished work.

The investigation will take Sean through extraordinary chapters in Hemingway’s life. Inspired by a true story, Cold Hearted River is a thrilling adventure, moving from Montana to Michigan, where a woman grapples with the secrets in her heart, to a cabin in Wyoming under the Froze To Death Plateau, and finally to the ruins in Havana, where an old man struggles to complete his life’s mission one true sentence at a time.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Again the author draws on history for the theme of this story.  Apparently Ernest Hemingway was quite the fisherman and had a trunk of tackle go missing when traveling West. When a wallet of fishing flies with EH engraved on it is found near a suspicious death and the president of the Madison River Liars and Fly Tiers Club is contacted about fishing gear said to belong to Hemingway Sean seems to think the events are connected. He is then hired to track down the items rumored to belong to the author. This takes him not only around the Montana/Wyoming area but all the way to Michigan and beyond. All to find the truth.

I love these characters, they are very believable and have become like dear friends. Sean and Martha have found their way back to each other which doesn’t make his former girlfriend very happy. I think the relationship may continue to be in flux as they are both very independent people, with Martha being very opinionated and strong willed while Sean seems to go with the flow.  I love their dialogue with each other. I am anxious to see their story pan out.

The book starts with a heart-wrenching telling of 2 people trapped in a storm that brings a search party out. I was captivated immediately.  I really enjoyed this story and the way Mr. McCafferty weaves Hemingway’s history right into this current day story. It takes many twists and turns as each new clue is uncovered. I do love the way this author writes, his laid back style, he is a very descriptive writer. This time I felt we were covering the same places more than once with the same details so it dragged just a little bit for me in places but enough to ever stop reading. I was totally taken by surprise at the ending. Hook, Line, and Sinker, put me in the net. The last twist, priceless. I was right there with Martha as Sean told her what happened.

A mystery, some history, drama, and romance makes this an enjoyable escape.

Synopsis

The chill in the air isn’t the only change October is bringing to Casper, Wyoming. Jake Rand, local attorney specializing in juvenile cases, is being courted to run for county attorney and a killer is stalking one of the city’s leading families. With Casper’s only homicide detective out of commission, Jake and his wife Emma, a therapist in private practice, step in to crack the case. Will the accidental detectives be able to keep the killer from striking again?

Death Changes Everything” is the fourth book in The Jake and Emma Mystery series. If you like your mysteries on the cozy side, with challenging puzzles and characters you’d be happy to call friends, this series is sure to be one of your favorites.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was so pleased to see this story. I enjoyed my first three visits too Casper very much.

In this installment Emma and Jake find themselves assisting the police when the lead detective is sidelined. He may be down but he is not out, he just needs them to do the legwork. Then they meet and collectively strategize how to catch the killer.

This was another really fast read for me. This one is about 100 pages longer than the previous books in the series so the author was able to give many more details about the characters and setting so I found myself even more invested. The pace is fast and the writing is solid.

The main plot has many moving parts and involves many people, some of the city’s leading families. That means the investigation steps on a lot of toes and can be very dangerous.

The secondary plot has Jake debating whether to through his hat in the ring to run for county attorney. This would be a huge change for him, switching sides from defense to prosecution. Plus it is no secret there has been corruption in the office previously so he would have a big job on his hands. Also if he does decide to run and wins how would affect these little investigations he seems to find himself in the middle of.  A very interesting dynamic coming for this series in the future.

Like the previous books, friendship, a couple that is truly in love, drama, and plenty of action action fill the pages. The author continues to improve with each story and this is the best one yet!  I highly recommend!

special guest blueStill playing catch up 🙁

I am excited to welcome Linda Crowder as my Special Guest Today!

Cropped head shot

I love reading cozy mysteries. I started with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, worked my way up to Cherry Ames, Student Nurse then hit the jackpot with Agatha Christie. I also enjoy reading Lilian Jackson Braun, Rita Mae Brown, Steve Demaree and Debora Garner. Cozies often feature ordinary people who, when they find themselves in the middle of a crime spree, take matters into their own hands instead of waiting for the police to solve the case.

Winter in Wyoming

Winter in Wyoming

Reading cozies is a great escape from the gritty reality of everyday life. There’s a little danger, a little romance, a little humor and a great puzzle to solve. What you won’t find in a cozy is gore, graphic sex or strings of profanity and that’s another reason I love to read them.

Part of the charm of a cozy is identifying with the characters and trying to guess who the murderer might be before the author reveals it. Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to star in your own cozy mystery? Let’s find out!

1. When taking a walk, you stumble across the body of a man. Quick, what is the first thing you do?
a. Run away, screaming at the top of your lungs.
b. Step away from the body to avoid contaminating the scene and calmly call 9-1-1.
c. Check the body for clues, one of which you absently put in your pocket, thinking it has nothing to do with the murder.

2. When told by the police to keep your nose out of the investigation, what do you do?
a. Pack a suitcase, them go visit your mother out of state until the murderer is behind bars.
b. Agree to comply, then go back to work, trying to forget the horror of finding a body.
c. Promise to comply, but spy on the person you think is the killer when you see them acting suspicious.

3. Who do you turn to when you need help breaking into the suspected murderer’s office?
a. Are you kidding? I’m staying out of town until the murderer is behind bars!
b. I would never break into someone’s home or office. I’d leave it to the police, who would have a search warrant.
c. My BFF, of course! If she can’t come, I’d drag along my reluctant husband (or boyfriend or ex-boyfriend – you get the idea).

4. What kind of job do you have?
a. Job? Who cares about jobs when there’s a murderer loose? I’ll get a new one when I get home.
b. I work in an office, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm with an hour off for lunch at Noon.
c. I own a specialty shop with really wonderful a clerk who always watches the store for me when I have to rush off to pursue a clue.

Sparky, Miss Too Cute herself

Reese, my beautiful chocolate retriever

Reese, my beautiful chocolate retriever

5. How many pets do you have and what kind?
a. I have a goldfish. I brought him with me to my mother’s house.
b. I don’t have pets. They are such a big responsibility.
c. I have an amazing cat who always knows who the murderer is before I do. If only she could talk!

6. The murderer is onto you! He’s got you cornered and is threatening to kill you! What do you do?
a. OMG – this is why I left town! How did he know where to find me? I’m gonna faint!
b. Thank goodness I kept up my Karate training until I reached black belt. That murderer doesn’t stand a chance.
c. Keeping my phone out of sight, I secretly dial my BFF. I trick the murderer into confessing, while my BFF listens and alerts the police. They break in just as the murderer finishes confessing and grabs for me!

How’d you do? If your answers were mostly:

A. Congratulations! You are perfect for a cozy. You’ll offer comic relief as a minor character who needs to be constantly reassured by the heroine, who becomes increasingly annoyed with your drama as the story progresses. You have a heart of gold and an endearing charm that might eventually win your way into the inner circle. Since the growth of characters from one book to the next is a hallmark of a cozy mystery series, you might find yourself out of the minors by the time you get to the third or fourth book.

B. Congratulations! You are perfect for a cozy. You’ll be an invaluable right arm to the wacky, impulsive heroine, keeping her from getting into too much trouble on the way to solving the murder. Depending on gender, you will be the BFF or reluctant romantic partner who injects the voice of reason, only to have the heroine sweep it away with a wave of her hand. With your devotion to her, plus your common sense and self-defense skills, you’ll be keeping her safe for many installments to come.

C. Congratulations! You are perfect for a cozy. You’ll be just the right mix of strong will and sweetness to track down a killer while keeping yourself out of his clutches. You’re going to have to rely on quick thinking friends and your own resourcefulness to get out of trouble, but you’ll always make it home safe to your wise and wonderful fur baby. You’re going to need a hefty helping of luck, because in a cozy series, dead bodies are going to pop up wherever you go and you don’t want to be the next victim!

In this short, cozy mystery, Jake and Emma Rand discovered each other after they both left painful first marriages. Their idyllic life together in the shadow of Casper Mountain is shattered when they stumble across the frozen body of a woman after an early blizzard. When the police investigation stalls, Jake and Emma set out to unravel the puzzle of who she is and how she met her lonely fate. What they uncover will rock this small western town to its core.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
A nice short mystery to kick off this series. I like Jake and Emma. They are so in love it was almost sad to see the murderer leave the body at their wonderful place. They work together to catch the culprit, I was surprised by the outcome but it did make sense. There are still some questions to be answered though…

Accidental detectives Jake and Emma Rand are back in their second adventure. Spring is coming to their home in the shadow of Casper Mountain and Emma can’t wait to see tulips and daffodils crowd out the snow that has covered her flower beds all winter. Then the May Day Blizzard hits, trapping the citizens of Casper, Wyoming in their homes, closing roads and shutting down highways out of town.

When murder strikes in spite of the snow, Detective Matt Joyner of the Casper Police Department quickly turns up the heat on his prime suspect – Emma’s friend, Kristy Castle! As Casper celebrates the annual Summer Solstice Parade and Rodeo, Jake and Emma fight to prove Kristy’s innocence. She’s hiding a terrible secret, but is she a killer?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I read this right after the first book in the series and they really flowed right together. That final snowstorm of the year had me shivering as we were having freezing rain here.

This time we meet more residents of Caspar and the plot was even more developed with the longer length of the story. There were plenty of twists too. I was very impressed with the author’s storytelling from book 1 to book 2. She really breathes life into both her characters and setting. She also sets us up to read book 3, Justice for Katie. I am thankful I do not have to wait like others did for this installment. I will be reading it just as soon as I can squeeze it in.

When Paige MacKenzie arrives in Jackson Hole, her only goal is to complete a simple newspaper assignment about the Old West. However, it’s not long before her instincts tell her there’s more than a basic story to be found in the popular, northwestern Wyoming mountain area. A chance encounter with attractive cowboy Jake Norris soon has Paige chasing a legend of buried treasure, passed down through generations.

From the torn edge of a water-damaged map to the mysterious glow of an antler arch, Paige will follow clues high into the mountainous terrain and deep into Jackson’s history. Side-stepping a few shady characters who are also searching for the same hidden reward, she will have to decide who is trustworthy and who is not.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I purchased this book a few weeks ago because it was set in Wyoming and I needed to read a book set in that state for my Where Are You Reading? Challenge and the synopsis intrigued me too.

I was very surprised by this story led us readers and Paige MacKenzie and I don’t want to give anything away but the mystery does take a track off the well trodden path the Jake was taking.

I liked these characters. Paige is an adventurous woman and proves it more than once. Jake is searching for a treasure that may not even be there but he finds Paige and realizes there may be something more important than gold.

The author gives wonderful descriptions of the mountains, sunrises and sunsets. I have never been to Wyoming but she took me there in my mind and it was a great trip. If you have been to Jackson Hole you would enjoy this very much.

I still have not decided if I liked the ending. I was hoping for something a little different but will be reading The Moonglow Cafe: A Paige MacKenzie Mystery to follow Paige on her next adventure.
